2 3 Resolution changing the name of South Street between Third Street and Terry A.

4 Francois Boulevard in Mission Bay South to "Warriors Way," in recognition of the

5 Golden State Warriors basketball team's contribution to the San Francisco Bay Area

6 and the City and County of San Francisco.

7 8 WHEREAS, The owners of the Golden State Warriors National Basketball Association

9 ("NBA") team are building a privately-financed state-of-the-art multi-purpose event center on

1O Blocks 29-32 (Assessor's Parcel Block No. 8722, Lot Nos. 1 and 8) in the Mission Bay South

11 Redevelopment Area ("Chase Center"); and

12 WHEREAS, Chase Center is bounded on the north by South Street, the south by 16th

13 Street, the east by Terry A. Francois Boulevard, and the west by Third Street; and

14 WHEREAS, The Chase Center will create a vibrant and exciting new venue that will

15 house the NBA championship team, the Golden State Warriors, as well as year-round

16 sporting events, entertainment, and conventions; and

17 WHEREAS, The Golden State Warriors contribute to the civic pride of the City and

18 County of San Francisco and the entire San Francisco Bay Area; and

19 WHEREAS, The Golden State Warriors have demonstrated a commitment to off-court

20 philanthropic endeavors that contribute to the well-being of the greater San Francisco Bay

21 Area, the City in general, and the local community and serve to inspire young people to

22 pursue their dreams; and

23 WHEREAS, The district surrounding Chase Center will create a lively local and

24 regional visitor-serving entertainment destination in the Mission Bay neighborhood and

25

2 and

3 WHEREAS, South Street was recently constructed, consists of a single block, and its

4 name bears no historic connection to the Mission Bay neighborhood or the City; and

5 WHEREAS, In recognition of the contributions Chase Center and the Golden State

6 Warriors, have had and will continue to have on the City and County of San Francisco, the

7 Board of Supervisors finds it appropriate to rename the street adjacent to the Center to

8 Warriors Way; and

9 WHEREAS, The Board of Supervisors recognizes that Public Works, on behalf of the

1O City, has taken all necessary actions to effecfthis name change, including fully complying with

11 regulations regarding street name changes under California Streets and Highway Code,

12 Section 970.5, which requires posted notice on the street for at least 10 days prior to the

13 Board of Supervisors hearing on this resolution, Streets and Highways Code, Section 5026,

14 and Government Code, Section 34091.1, and Public Works Code, Section 423; now,

15 therefore, be it

16 RESOLVED, That the Board of Supervisors hereby changes the name of South Street

17 between Third Street and Terry A. Francois Boulevard in Mission Bay South to "Warriors

18 Way," in recognition of the Golden State Warriors valued contributions to the City and County

19 of San Francisco and the entire Bay Area region; and, be it

20 FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Board of Supervisors, in accordance with

21 Transportation Code, Section 2.2, directs the Municipal Transportation Agency to prepare

· 22 street signs indicating both the new and the former names of the street, with the new name

23 "Warriors Way" in large letters, and the old name "South Street" in smaller letters above or

24 beneath the new name; and, be it

2 street signs for five years, and then the street signs shall be replaced with signs indicating

3 only the new street name, "Warriors Way;" and, be it

4 FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Board of Supervisors directs the Clerk of the Board

5 to promptly forward a copy of this resolution to the County Surveyor in accordance with

6 California Streets and Highway Code, Section 5026 and that the County Surveyor include the

7 new street name on the Official Maps of the City.
