FEBRUARY 2019 7 The Wild Steer New Café 60 Location

The ADRC-CW is pleased to announce a new, but not so new, Café 60 location: The Wild Steer Diner located in the Equity Auction House in Stratford.

This is not the first time the ADRC-CW has had a Café 60 location in the Equity Auction House. Before the Wild Steer Diner occupied the space, JJ’s Café hosted Café 60 customers. In 2015, when Jamie Strohkirch opened the Wild Steer Diner, she was told about the program by the owner of JJ’s Café. It wasn’t long before her customers were asking her if she would consider hosting Café 60 customers and contracting with the ADRC-CW.

Jamie reached out to the nutrition director for more information on the Café 60 program. She found out that there was another location very nearby so offering her a contract was not possible. Although she wasn’t able to contract with the ADRC-CW in 2015, she still wanted to serve her senior diners the best she could. Jamie took matters into her own hands and created a senior menu. These menu items included smaller portions at a more affordable price.

The ADRC-CW is excited to embark on this new partnership with Jamie and the Wild Steer Diner. Jamie’s menu is filled with homemade items that meet the nutritional guidelines set for the program. It is not easy to replace a long-standing, small-town café but The Wild Steer provides a warm and welcoming environment for all of its customers. Jamie has adopted the Trauma Informed Principles of the ADRC-CW: welcoming, trustworthy, respectful, collaborative, and empowering.

There are three Café 60 locations, Athens Country Café in Athens, Korner Kitchen in Edgar, and now The Wild Steer in Stratford. If you would like more information or would like to register as a participant in the Café 60 program, you can pick up information at any of the Café 60 locations or call 715-261-6070.

14 FEBRUARY 2019 Activities to Engage People with Dementia By Erin Johnson, Caregiver Support Coordinator If you’re caring for someone who has Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia, you likely spend time keeping that person active and engaged in the world around them. In the early stages of dementia, if possible, encourage continued involvement in regular activities – bridge club, a weekly lunch date with friends, service organizations, or a coffee clutch. Over time, as abilities become more limited due to their progressing dementia, it becomes difficult for the person you’re caring for to remain involved in their regular activities.

Not surprisingly, continued participation in stimulating, enjoyable activities remains important for many reasons. Activities can help the person you’re caring for, feel like they are successful at something and provide a sense of self-worth that they may be missing. In addition, focusing on a task or activity can help distract someone with dementia when they are bored, engaging in unwanted behaviors like rummaging through closets or hiding items; or when they’re experiencing strong feelings of anger, frustration or depression. Additionally, participating in enjoyable activities throughout the day can decrease the opportunity or desire to take a nap, which can help improve overnight sleep routines for the person in your care.

When thinking about activities for your loved one, it’s important to consider things they’re familiar with, topics they’re interested in, or something that has special meaning for them. Ideas could include:

Get outside – go for a short walk in the park, go Cook or bake together – try new, simple recipes or fishing, bird watching, feed ducks at the local pond, make treasured, time-tested favorites! Depending on or sit on a bench at the park and watch the people interest or ability, they could help gather ingredients, and animals. FEBRUARY 2019 15 Activities to Engage People with Dementia Continued In addition, as their dementia progresses, simple tasks can also provide a great reward. These could include simple puzzles with fewer pieces, cutting pictures from magazines to make a picture book, folding towels, matching socks, and sorting coins or bolts.

As a caregiver, it can be overwhelming to coordinate and oversee all of the daily needs of someone with dementia. It’s important to know you don’t need to do it alone! Perhaps a family member, a friend of the person you’re caring for, or a home care agency employee can help your loved one participate in engaging activities, too. Maybe a granddaughter comes over to bake once a week with the person you’re caring for, or their longtime friend visits periodically to reminisce about their childhood and school years. Think “outside the box” as others may be able to help the person you’re caring for participate in meaningful, engaging activities.

Fluids for Older Adults By Melanie Sanford, Dietetic Intern, UW-Stout As a natural part of the aging process, our bodies undergo changes that increase our risk of becoming dehydrated. As we age, we lose our sense of thirst and ability to recognize that we feel thirsty. Ultimately, this leads to not drinking enough liquids and becoming dehydrated. Dehydration happens when our body loses more fluid than is consumed. Our body then doesn’t have enough water and fluids to carry out its normal functions. In addition, your fluid balance can be affected by medications, stress, general health, exercise, and the weather.

Dehydration can lead to serious consequences including an increased risk of falls, hospitalization, and it can lead to kidney and urinary problems. For that reason, it is important to know the signs and symptoms of dehydration. The signs of dehydration include decreased urination, dark-colored urine, dizziness, confusion, headaches, dry skin, dry mouth, and fatigue.

The most important way you can prevent dehydration is making sure you are drinking enough fluids. The general fluid recommendation for older adults is a minimum of 1.5 liters of fluid per day. Fluids should come from water, other beverages, or foods that have high water content. Caffeinated drinks can cause frequent urination and may lead to dehydration.

As we age, we are not as physically active as we once were, which can lead to a decrease in appetite. With a reduction in appetite, we eat fewer foods and as a result get fewer fluids from food sources. However, water can be found in fruits and vegetables, like apples, oranges, watermelon, celery, lettuce, cucumbers, and many more options. Therefore, including fruits and vegetables as part of a nutritional diet will also help keep you hydrated.

Tips and tricks to increase your hydration: • Always carry a water bottle with you. • Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. • Have a cup of soup with one of your meals. • Add lemon or cucumber slices to enhance your water. • Add powdered drink mix to your water to enhance the flavor without adding excess sugar. • Drink a full glass of water if you need to take a pill. • Have a glass of water before you exercise, do outside work, or walk, especially on a hot day. • Aim for variety! Different flavors and textures can help increase fluid intake.

Staying hydrated can be simple and is important in preventing the need to go to the hospital for dehydration. Remember adding water to your routine is a good way to add fluids each day without adding extra calories. Make hydration enjoyable by stocking up on foods and drinks you enjoy. Your body will thank you because hydration equals proper function.
