In 2003, he appeared in 11:14 and the short film Certainly Not a Fairytale. The next year, he starred opposite Mark Valley in the ABC pilot “Harry Green and Eugene.” He also appeared in Jenna Fischer’s short film LolliLove and began a recurring stint on “CSI.” The studio blocked him from appearing (as Apatow wanted) in The 40 Year-Old Virgin, and Segel instead found success in 2005 on TV. He guest starred on “Alias” and was cast as Midwestern transplant Marshall Eriksen on the CBS comedy “How I Met Your Mother.” In Forgetting Sarah Marshall, his debut as a screenwriter and leading man, Jason Segel plays Last year, Segel played one of Seth Rogen’s more Peter Bretter, a songwriter who retreats to Hawaii lecherous friends in Knocked Up (2007).

+ Pregnant pause: Seth Rogen and Katherine Heigl share an awkward meal Knock, in Knocked Up Page: 5 MP: Y M C knock, K who’s there? Seth Rogen’s role in Knocked Up was a case of life imitating art, writes SALLY BROWNE Couple: Colour: ITH Seth Rogen, what you see is what you get. The Canadian actor, who plays amiable slacker Ben Stone in the roman- tic comedy Knocked Up, says his scenes Win the movie aren’t far off his real-life experiences. In the film, directed by The 40 Year Old Virgin’s Judd Apatow and also starring Paul Rudd, Ben gets a sur- prise when his one-night stand with attractive E! News presenter Alison Scott (played by Grey’s Anatomy’s Katherine Heigl) turns into a life-changing situation after she falls pregnant. That might be a stretch from Seth’s reality, but the scenes where Ben hangs out at home with his friends, who play pranks on each other and watch DVDs all day, are not far off. ‘‘I actually lived with a lot of those guys,’’ Rogen says. ‘‘Those were my actual best friends those guys. It was at times literally identical to what you see in the movie. We all took pictures of our apartments and gave them to the set decorators, and that’s how they made the set.’’ Rogen’s deep, booming laugh is easy to warm to. You get the feeling he’d be a fun guy to hang out with, provided you were equipped with safety gear. ‘‘They would just ask us, ‘What do you guys do in your free time?’ We would smoke weed and then light boxing gloves on fire and beat the crap out of each other with them,’’ he says.

  • A Textual Analysis of the Closer and Saving Grace: Feminist and Genre Theory in 21St Century Television
A TEXTUAL ANALYSIS OF THE CLOSER AND SAVING GRACE: FEMINIST AND GENRE THEORY IN 21ST CENTURY TELEVISION Lelia M. Stone, B.A., M.P.A. Thesis Prepared for the Degree of MASTER OF ARTS UNIVERSITY OF NORTH TEXAS December 2013 APPROVED: Harry Benshoff, Committee Chair George Larke-Walsh, Committee Member Sandra Spencer, Committee Member Albert Albarran, Chair of the Department of Radio, Television and Film Art Goven, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences Mark Wardell, Dean of the Toulouse Graduate School Stone, Lelia M. A Textual Analysis of The Closer and Saving Grace: Feminist and Genre Theory in 21st Century Television. Master of Arts (Radio, Television and Film), December 2013, 89 pp., references 82 titles. Television is a universally popular medium that offers a myriad of choices to viewers around the world. American programs both reflect and influence the culture of the times. Two dramatic series, The Closer and Saving Grace, were presented on the same cable network and shared genre and design. Both featured female police detectives and demonstrated an acute awareness of postmodern feminism. The Closer was very successful, yet Saving Grace, was cancelled midway through the third season. A close study of plot lines and character development in the shows will elucidate their fundamental differences that serve to explain their widely disparate reception by the viewing public. • 826Michigan to Host Adva...Ew
APRIL 19, 2012 - 5:24PM 826michigan to host advance screening of 'The FiveYear Engagement' and Q&A with crew BY MATT EASTON Last year it seemed everyone (of legal age) had a bar tale revolving around their beer-fueled interactions with the actor most likely to be found on a college campus drinking casually: Jason Segel. Why “most likely?” Because, in the majority of his films Segel plays the sort of guy you’d expect to find enjoying himself in a bar, bringing a sort of life to the occasion but never shoving himself into the center of attention. These are just assumptions based off his roles, but upon hearing the stories told about Segel in those weeks he was in Ann Arbor, his personality doesn’t appear to stray far from the characters he plays. Relaxed, dude-like and fun-loving; he seems like someone worth hanging outwith. Of course, as much as we might like to believe Segel came up to Michigan for some quality time with a bunch of students, the truth is he came to film scenes for his latest film, “The Five-Year Engagement.” The movie tells of the trials faced by a couple’s five-year engagement, one of which is Emily Blunt’s character receiving a position at the University of Michigan, forcing a long-distance move. Written by Segel and Nicholas Stoller (“The Muppets”), “The Five-Year Engagement” is one of the select few films that have chosen their setting to be Ann Arbor (alongside “Answer This!” and perhaps less obviously, “Jumper”).

AMERICAN MASCULINITY AND HOMOSOCIAL BEHAVIOR IN THE BROMANCE ERA by DIANA SARGENT Under the Direction of Patricia Davis ABSTRACT This study examines and reflects upon the current “bromance” culture that has emerged in American society and aims to conceptualize how media texts relate to masculine hegemony. Attention to current media portrayals, codes of conduct, rituals, homosocial interaction, and con- structions of masculinity in American culture is essential for the evaluation of the current era of American masculinity. Mediated portrayals present an ironic position on male closeness, dictate how men should behave towards women and other men, and create real life situations in which these mediated expectations are fostered and put into practice. Textual analyses of the films Superbad and I Love You, Man and the television series How I Met Your Mother were conducted, as well as an ethnographic study of cult film audiences of The Room to better understand mani- festations of homosocial environments in mediated texts and in real life settings.
