May 2008 チェルノブイリ原発事故の実相解明への多角的アプローチ - 20 年を機会とする事故被害のまとめ(II) - トヨタ財団助成研究 (2004 年 11 月~2006 年 10 月) 研究報告書(英語版) 研究代表者 今中哲二 2008年5月 Preface This is the English version report of the international collaboration study, “Multi-side Approach to the Realities of the Chernobyl NPP Accident: Summing-up of the Consequences of the Accident Twenty Years” which was carried out in November 2004 – October 2006 supported by a research grant from the Toyota Foundation. Twenty three articles by authors of various professions are included about Chernobyl. The Japanese version was already published in August 2007, which contains 24 articles. (http://www.rri.kyoto-u.ac.jp/NSRG/tyt2004/CherTYT2004.htm) Out of them, 12 articles are included in both versions. As a specialist of nuclear engineering, I have been investigating the Chernobyl accident since its beginning. Before the 20th anniversary of Chernobyl, I hoped to start a new project to try to make an overview of “Chernobyl disaster” by collecting various viewpoints of persons who have been involved in Chernobyl in their own ways: scientists, journalists, NGO activists, sufferers etc. I thought that a new image of Chernobyl could be constructed through learning different viewpoints. Fortunately the Toyota Foundation supported my proposal. I think we could make a unique report about Chernobyl. In addition to this report, the following two reports were already published through the previous collaborations: ¾ Research Activities about the Radiological Consequences of the Chernobyl NPS Accident and Social Activities to Assist the Sufferers by the Accident. E-mail: [email protected] Abstract. Problems of rational water use and water quality assessment are the priorities of many states, especially in the basins of transboundary rivers. Creation and functioning of the cascade of Dnieper reservoirs led to a radical transformation of the hydrological regime of the Dnieper River. As a result, there occurred a significant deterioration of the physical, chemical and biological characteristics of surface water quality, increase of its trophic state, reduction of the efficiency and stability of the aquatic ecosystem of the Dnieper basin, which is largely determined by anthropogenic factors. As a result of interpretation the series of space images (August, 1986-2016) of the satellites Landsat- 5, Landsat- 7 and Landsat-8 with a spatial resolution of 30 meters, the spatio-temporal trend of changes in physical (water transparency), hydrochemical (general phosphorus concentration in water), biological (chlorophyll-a) properties of water areas of reservoirs was determined. In studies trophic state index developed by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection was used to classify all types of water surface, including rivers. It is established that the value of trophic state index in reservoirs is distributed unevenly from 26.5 to 56.5.

Assessment of the environmental contamination and the resulting radiation exposure of the population was an important part of the International Chernobyl Project in 1990–1991. This project was designed to assess the measures that the then USSR Government had taken to enable people to live safely in contaminated areas, and to evaluate the measures taken to safeguard human health there. It was organized by the IAEA under the auspices of an International Advisory Committee with the participation of the Commission of the European Communities (CEC), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the International Labour Organisation (ILO), the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR), the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). The IAEA has also been engaged in further studies in this area through projects such as the one on validation of environmental model predictions (VAMP) and through its technical co-operation programme.

A relativistic analysis of the trajectories depicted on the Chernobyl Liquidator Medal is conducted assuming static uniform magnetic and electric fields. The parametric trajectories are determined using the energies of alpha (α) and beta (β) particles relevant to the Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident and compared with the trajectories depicted on the liquidator medal. For minimum alpha particle velocity of 0.0512c, the beta particle trajectory depicted on the medal is highly unlikely to have come from a naturally occurring nuclear decay process. The parametric equations are used to determine the necessary beta energies to reproduce the depicted trajectories. This article documents the unfortunate misrepresentation of a famous scientific experiment on an honorary medal and illustrates the importance of better communication between artists and scientists. Introduction This report is a distillation of two talks given by Linda Pentz Gunter of Beyond Nuclear International and Linda Walker of Chernobyl Children’s Project UK. These were given at a Greater Manchester and District CND meeting close to International Women’s Day. The talks were on the subjects of the impacts of radiation on women and the positive role a number of women have played in the aftermath of the Chernobyl disaster. Beyond Nuclear International is a dynamic new web platform that tells the story of those affected by nuclear power or nuclear weapons from a humanitarian perspective. The Chernobyl Children’s Project UK was founded 25 years ago this year following a special conference held by the host Council of the NFLA, Manchester City Council. A commemorative civic reception for the charity is being hosted by the Lord Mayor of Manchester on April 27 th , the day after the 36 th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster. The Impact of Chernobyl on Health and Labour Market Performance Abstract Using longitudinal data from Ukraine we examine the extent of any long-lasting effects of radiation exposure from the Chernobyl disaster on the health and labour market performance of the adult workforce. The variation in the local area level of radiation fallout from the Chernobyl accident is considered as a random exogenous shock with which to try to establish its causal impact on poor health, labour force participation, hours worked and wages. There appears to be a significant positive association between local area-level radiation dosage and perception of poor health, though much weaker associations between local area-level dosage and other specific self- reported health conditions.
