We examine one of the factors that may have contributed to the Lone Woman’s abandonment and discuss several newly‑translated Russian American Company (RAC) documents, one of which gives details of a long‑rumored deadly conflict between a Russian‑led crew of Alaskan native otter hunters and the San Nicolas Island natives (Nicoleño).

  • Aleut Consisting of Near Island Aleuts, Kodiak Island Alutiiq and Unangan Inuit
    1. Description 1.1 Name of society, language, and language family: Aleut consisting of Near Island Aleuts, Kodiak Island Alutiiq and Unangan Inuit. They traditionally speak the Aleutic language, which has common roots in Proto-Eskimo-Aleut with the Inuit languages spoken throughout arctic Alaska, Canada, Greenland, and Siberi [2] 1.2 ISO code (3 letter code from ethnologue.com): Ale 1.3 Location (latitude/longitude): Indigenous to southwest Alaska, from Prince William Sound in the east, across the Alaska Peninsula, and extending west through the Aleutian Islands [2] 54° N, 164° W [3] 1.4 Brief history and Influence of missionaries/schools/governments/powerful neighbors: After the arrival of missionaries in the late 18th century, many Aleuts became Christian by joining the Russian Orthodox Church. One of the earliest Christian martyrs in North America was Saint Peter the Aleut. In 18th century, Russian furriers established settlements on the islands and exploited the people. There was a recorded revolt against Russian workers in Amchitka in 1784. It started from the exhaustion of necessities that the Russians provided to local people in return for furs they had made. In 1811, in order to obtain more of the now commercially valuable otter pelts, a party of Aleut hunters traveled to the coastal island of San Nicolas, near the Alta California-Baja California border. The locally resident Nicoleño nation sought a payment from the Aleut hunters for the large number of otters being killed in the area. Disagreement arose, turning violent; in the ensuing battle nearly all Nicoleño men were killed. This, along with European diseases, so impacted the Nicoleños, that by 1853, only one living Nicoleña person remained.

  • Whose Tradition?: Adapting Orthodox Christianity in North America By
Whose Tradition?: Adapting Orthodox Christianity in North America by © Lydia Bringerud A thesis submitted to the School of Graduate Studies In partial fulfillment of the Requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. Department of Folklore Memorial University of Newfoundland May 2019 St. John’s Newfoundland For my Naşa Karin-Irina Doehl, proud feminist and Orthodox Christian, to whom I owe so much. May her memory be eternal. ii Abstract Focusing on three Orthodox Christian communities – St. Paraskeva and St. Luke in Midwestern US, and St. Nicolas in Atlantic Canada – this thesis examines the complex cultural dynamics surrounding Orthodox Christianity in North America. I explore the ways believers, both the Orthodox-born and new converts, negotiate with an ancient faith in a contemporary society where this faith may appear counter-cultural. Building on Leonard Primiano’s (1995) theory of vernacular religion, I propose the concept of vernacular theology to shed light on these processes. Despite the illusion of theology as the exclusive purview of clergy, laypeople exercise interpretive agency to creatively adapt doctrine to their individual life circumstances. Considering the significant role of Church history in the religious choices and experiences of my consultants, I begin with a historical overview of Orthodox Christianity, from its origins in the Roman Empire to the present day, including its path to North America. The themes of empire, romantic nationalism, anti-Westernism, and Communism that have historically shaped this faith are explored specifically in Romania, Russia, Serbia, and Ukraine, the home countries of my Orthodox-born participants. I analyze the Orthodox Church’s response to globalization and how this may affect the future of the Church in North America.

  • Cleveland Deanery Report
2017 Cleveland Deanery Supplement to Parish Reports Matushka Laryssa Hutnyan has returned to work and is doing well after her bout with cancer. 156 campers participated over three weeks at St Vladimir’s Camp in Farmdale, Ohio. Fr David Lis, of Holy Assumption in Marblehead, has officially retired from active duty and is living in the Toledo area. Also, Fr Stacy Richter, formerly of Holy Assumption in Canton, has filled the vacancy at St Peter the Aleut in Minot, ND. Both were sent off by the Deanery with a nice Reception at a local winery. The two parish vacancies resulting from the above have been expediently filled. Fr John Kanerk, a recent graduate of St Tikhon’s, has been assigned in Canton and Fr Andrew Bartek, formerly of St Panteleimon in Summit, IL has taken the reins in Marblehead. Both priests are settling in nicely.
