Walk A Mile raises almost $100K for sexual violence survivors

State DOC recognized for registering the largest team BY KAYLA ROBINS [email protected]

A fundraising event for a nonprofit that provides services to sexual as- sault survivors in the Midlands re- cently raised nearly $100,000 by asking people to "walk a mile in their shoes." The ninth-annual event raised $97,124 last week in Columbia for Sex- ual Trauma Services of the Midlands and the services it provides to survi- vors of sexual assault, according to a news release from the agency. "Walk A Mile is our largest event during Sexual Assault Awareness Month," said Mary Dell Hayes, STSM executive director. "There is no better time to honor and support survivors in our community and stand up against sexual violence. Walk A Mile is a movement in the Midlands." More than 1,487 men and women gathered at the South Carolina State- house to raise awareness of the im- pact of sexual abuse in the community and support survivors on their healing journey. The Largest Community Team Tro- phy was given to the South Carolina Department of Corrections for regis- tering 725 of its employees. Carlos Su- arez was recognized as the year's top fundraiser, collecting $4,130 for the nonprofit, and Joye White was recog- nized as the second top fundraiser by bringing in $3,187. "An end to violence in our state is PHOTOS BY ROSE JARRETT / THE SUMTER ITEM possible if we all work together," Hayes said. Through that short time, I was able to help many families plan and fund their funerals so they can ensure the protection of their loved ones when that time comes. It is an amazing feeling knowing that my efforts can make such a big difference to a family on the worst day of their lives. Before finding my way to this company, I used to work at a local grocery store earning an hourly wage but I was not inspired at all by what I was doing. Often times I find that most people who work just for a check feel the same way that I did so I knew it was time to make a change. One of the many things I was able to do through working this business was purchasing a vehicle, something I never thought I would be able to do on my own working an hourly wage. Through this career, I am able to set my own schedule and there is no limit to the income I can make. Not only do you have constant support and training from management but I highly doubt you will find another job where the managers want you to see you win as much as you do! Bear in mind that the best investment you can make is to invest in yourself. So if you are looking for a change in careers, this is the opportunity for you!
