  • CH02 End of Chapter Answers Review Questions 1. According To
CH02 End of Chapter Answers Review Questions 1. According to Figure 2-7, the following wavelengths fall within the following ranges of the electromagnetic spectrum: a. 2.6 m – Infrared b. 34 m – Radio c. 0.54 nm – X-rays d. 0.0032 nm – Gamma rays e. 0.620 m – Visible f. 310 nm – Ultraviolet g. 0.012 m – This lies right near the border between microwave and radio waves. Since the figure is not accurate to two decimal places, it is not possible to determine within which wavelength regime this falls. 2. Since radio waves are a form of electromagnetic radiation, they travel at the speed of light. The wavelength and frequency of any wave is related by the formula: f = c, where c is equal to the speed of light, or 3 × 108 m/s. Using this formula, and knowing the values for both c and f (880.65 MHz, or 8.8065 × 108 Hz), we can solve for the wavelength: = 3 × 108 m/s / 8.8065 x 108 Hz = 0.341 meters. 3. According to the Stefan-Boltzmann law, hotter objects radiate more intensely than cooler objects. According to Wien’s law, that energy is not radiated uniformly at all wavelengths, but mostly at a wavelength that is inversely proportional to the temperature of the object. As a hot, glowing object becomes hotter, it radiates more intensely at all wavelengths, becoming brighter, and shifts the peak wavelength (at which it radiates the most energy) to shorter wavelengths, becoming bluer. 4. According to the Stefan-Boltzmann law, the intensity of a blackbody object is related to the temperature of an object to the fourth power.

  • Astronomical Coordinate Systems
Appendix 1 Astronomical Coordinate Systems A basic requirement for studying the heavens is being able to determine where in the sky things are located. To specify sky positions, astronomers have developed several coordinate systems. Each sys- tem uses a coordinate grid projected on the celestial sphere, which is similar to the geographic coor- dinate system used on the surface of the Earth. The coordinate systems differ only in their choice of the fundamental plane, which divides the sky into two equal hemispheres along a great circle (the fundamental plane of the geographic system is the Earth’s equator). Each coordinate system is named for its choice of fundamental plane. The Equatorial Coordinate System The equatorial coordinate system is probably the most widely used celestial coordinate system. It is also the most closely related to the geographic coordinate system because they use the same funda- mental plane and poles. The projection of the Earth’s equator onto the celestial sphere is called the celestial equator. Similarly, projecting the geographic poles onto the celestial sphere defines the north and south celestial poles. However, there is an important difference between the equatorial and geographic coordinate sys- tems: the geographic system is fixed to the Earth and rotates as the Earth does. The Equatorial system is fixed to the stars, so it appears to rotate across the sky with the stars, but it’s really the Earth rotating under the fixed sky. The latitudinal (latitude-like) angle of the equatorial system is called declination (Dec. for short). It measures the angle of an object above or below the celestial equator.

' NASA SP-7069 NASA Thesaurus Astronomy Vocabulary A subset of the NASA Thesaurus prepared for the international Astronomical Union Conference July 27-31,1988 This publication was prepared by the NASA Scientific and Technical Information Facility operated for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration by RMS Associates. INTRODUCTION The NASA Thesaurus Astronomy Vocabulary consists of terms used by NASA indexers as descriptors for astronomy-related documents. The terms are presented in a hierarchical format derived from the 1988 edition of the NASA Thesaurus Volume 1 -Hierarchical Listing. Main (postable) terms and non- postable cross references are listed in alphabetical order. READING THE HIERARCHY Each main term is followed by a display of its context within a hierarchy. USE references, UF (used for) references, and SN (scope notes) appear immediately below the main term, followed by GS (generic structure), the hierarchical display of term relationships. The hierarchy is headed by the broadest term within that hierarchy. Terms that are broader in meaning than the main term are listed . above the main term; terms narrower in meaning are listed below the main term. The term itself is in boldface for easy identification. Finally, a list of related terms (RT) from other hierarchies is provided. Within a hierarchy, the number of dots to the left of a term indicates its hierarchical level - the more dots, the lower the level (i.e., the narrower the meaning of the term). For example, the term "ELLIPTICAL GALAXIES" which is preceded by two dots is narrower in meaning than "GALAXIES"; this in turn is narrower than "CELESTIAL BODIES".

The Carbon Underground identifies the 100 largest public coal companies, and the 100 largest public oil and gas companies, based on estimates of the potential CO2 emissions of their reported reserves as of November 2013. The trends evidenced in this report demonstrate that reserve growth continues to be the norm for both the oil and gas and the coal sectors as a whole. The 546 Gt CO2 emissions potential estimated to be embedded in the reported reserves of the 200 firms - The Carbon Underground 200TM - represents over 400% of the firms’ carbon budget allocation, based on their share of carbon emissions potential of global reserves. This report estimates an updated carbon budget based on the only IPCC climate scenario with a future less than 2° C above preindustrial levels with >66% probability.

This report interprets conjunctions of nearly every fixed star that has been given an astrological name to the planets, Asc, MC, 7th house cusp, and 4th cusp. Each interpretation given in this report is based on extensive research on the historical astrological meanings and myths associated with the fixed stars. A list of notable people who have the same conjunction aspect as you do is also given. This comprehensive analysis of the influence of the fixed stars combined with a list of notable people who also have this aspect provides you with extensive information, and hopefully astrologers who use this report can use this information to develop an even more refined and clearer understanding of the meaning of every fixed stars. • Extrasolar Planets and Their Host Stars
Kaspar von Braun & Tabetha S. Boyajian Extrasolar Planets and Their Host Stars July 25, 2017 arXiv:1707.07405v1 [astro-ph.EP] 24 Jul 2017 Springer Preface In astronomy or indeed any collaborative environment, it pays to figure out with whom one can work well. From existing projects or simply conversations, research ideas appear, are developed, take shape, sometimes take a detour into some un- expected directions, often need to be refocused, are sometimes divided up and/or distributed among collaborators, and are (hopefully) published. After a number of these cycles repeat, something bigger may be born, all of which one then tries to simultaneously fit into one’s head for what feels like a challenging amount of time. That was certainly the case a long time ago when writing a PhD dissertation. Since then, there have been postdoctoral fellowships and appointments, permanent and adjunct positions, and former, current, and future collaborators. And yet, con- versations spawn research ideas, which take many different turns and may divide up into a multitude of approaches or related or perhaps unrelated subjects. Again, one had better figure out with whom one likes to work. And again, in the process of writing this Brief, one needs create something bigger by focusing the relevant pieces of work into one (hopefully) coherent manuscript. It is an honor, a privi- lege, an amazing experience, and simply a lot of fun to be and have been working with all the people who have had an influence on our work and thereby on this book. To quote the late and great Jim Croce: ”If you dig it, do it.
