Journal of Species Research 8(2):215-224, 2019 Three feather mites (Acari: Sarcoptiformes: Astigmata) isolated from Tringa glareola in South Korea Yeong-Deok Han and Gi-Sik Min* Department of Biological Sciences, Inha University, Incheon 22212, Republic of Korea *Correspondent: [email protected] We describe three feather mites recovered from a wood sandpiper Tringa glareola that was stored in a -20°C freezer at the Chungnam Wild Animal Rescue Center. These feather mites are reported for the first time in South Korea: Avenzoaria totani (Canestrini, 1978), Ingrassia veligera Oudemans, 1904 and Mon tchadskiana glareolae Dabert and Ehrnsberger, 1999. In this study, we provide morphological diagnoses and illustrations. Additionally, we provide partial sequences of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene as molecular characteristics of three species. E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Feather mites of the family Avenzoariidae (Acari: Astigmata: Analgoidea) are recorded for the first time in Saudi Arabia. A new avenzoariid species, Zachvatkinia (Zachvatkinia) repressae sp. n. (Avenzoariidae: Bonnetellinae), is described from the White-cheeked Tern, Sterna repressa Hartert, 1916 (Charadriiformes: Sternidae). The new species belongs to the sternae group and is closely related to Z. (Z.) chlidoniae Mironov, 1989a. Two more species, Z. (Z.) dromae Mironov, 1992 and Z. (Z.) sternae (Canestrini & Fanzago, 1876), were collected from the Crab Plover Dromas ardeola Paykull, 1805 (Charadriiformes: Dromadidae) and the Sooty Gull Ichthyaetus hemprichii (Bruch, 1853) (Charadriiformes: Laridae), re- spectively. -

Box 844, Ames, Iowa 50010, 1 Department of Entomology, University of Minnesota, St. Paul, Minnesota 55108, and 4 Florida Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission, Okeechobee, Florida 34974 ABSTRACT: Thirty fulvous whistling-ducks (Dendrocygna bicolor) collected during 1984-1985 from the Ever- glades Agricultural Area of southern Florida were examined for parasites. Twenty-eight species were identified and included 8 trematodes, 6 cestodes, 1 nematode, 4 chewing lice, and 9 mites. All parasites except the 4 species of lice and 1 of the mites are new host records for fulvous whistling-ducks. None of the ducks were infected with blood parasites. Every duck was infected with at least 2 species of helminths (mean 4.2; range 2- 8 species). The most common helminths were the trematodes Echinostoma trivolvis and Typhlocoelum cucu- merinum and 2 undescribed cestodes of the genus Diorchis, which occurred in prevalences of 67, 63, 50, and 50%, respectively. Only 1 duck was free of parasitic arthropods; each of the other 29 ducks was infested with at least 3 species of arthropods (mean 5.3; range 3-9 species). The most common arthropods included an undescribed feather mite (Ingrassia sp.) and the chewing louse Holomenopon leucoxanthum, both of which occurred in 97% of the ducks. -

BtSHOJ' MOSEtrM INTRODUCTION The following report on crustaceans selected from materia1lwhich has accumulated in Bishop Museum for several years inc1uder (1), new species, (2) known species as new Hawaiian records, an,(i (3) known species rarely recorded in the central Pacific. Recently, valuable collections have been received as a result of the current dredging operations of the M alliin, a boat of the Fi hand Game Division, Territorial Board of Agriculture and Forestry. These collections clearly reveal the presence of a crustacean fauna a ut the Hawaiian Islands. at depths of about 10 fathoms and beyond, which is not seen on the shallow reefs. Many of the unique species taken nearly 50 years ago by the Albatross of the United States Fis Com~ mission have again been brought to view. Other rare crustaceans recorded in the report were receive1 from the Honolulu Aquarium and came from fish traps operated b~ com mercial fishermen off the coast of Oahu at depths ranging aro~nd 16 fathoms. These specimens show that fauna at these depths har close affinities with that of the western Pacific and the Indian Ocej. It is well known that many organisms, both land and marine ~orrns, have been introduced into the Hawaiian area within recent I.years, chiefly as a result of war activities. Ocean-going craft returning to Hawaii from forward areas in the Pacific transport on theil' hulls marine organisms not previously recognized among local shore fauna, and some of these inunigrants become established in the new e9viron ment. -
New Hexapodid Crabs from the Eocene of Vicenza (NE Italy) (Crustacea, Decapoda, Brachyura, Hexapodidae)

Milano, 151 (I): 51-75, Gennaio 2010 Antonio De Angeli *, Danièle Guinot ** & Alessandro Garassino *** New hexapodid crabs from the Eocene of Vicenza (NE Italy) (Crustacea, Decapoda, Brachyura, Hexapodidae) Abstract - The Hexapodidae was known to date from the Cenozoic of Veneto by Stevea cesarii Beschin, Busulini, De Angeli & Tessier, 1994, from the middle Eocene of Chiampo Valley (Vicenza), and Palaeopinnixa sp. from the upper Eocene of Possagno (Treviso). Recent discoveries from the Eocene of Vicenza area allowed to describe three new genera and four new species of hexapodids. Bellhexapus granulatus n. gen., n. sp., Eohexapus albertii n. gen., n. sp., and Eurohexapus lobatus n. gen., n. sp. from the middle Eocene of “Albanello” quarry at Nogarole Vicentino (Vicenza), and Palaeopinnixa alontensis n. sp. from the upper Eocene of Alonte (Vicenza). Bellhexapus granulatus n. gen., n. sp. and Eurohexapus lobatus n. gen., n. sp. preserve the carapace, the ventral and abdominal male parts, while Eohexapus albertii n. gen., n. sp. preserves the carapace, the ventral and abdominal female parts. Rock Pigeons (Columba livia Gmelin) have colonized most of Canada and are found in almost every urban center. In its native range, C. livia hosts more than a dozen species of ectosymbiotic arthropods, and some of these lice and mites have been reported from Rock Pigeons in the United States. Despite being so abundant and widely distributed, there are only scattered host-symbiont records for rock pigeons in Canada. Here we sample Rock Pigeons from seven locations across Canada from the west to east (a distance of > 4000 km) to increase our knowledge of the distribution of their ectosymbionts. Additionally, because ectosymbiont abundance can be affected by temperature and humidity, we looked at meteorological variables for each location to assess whether they were correlated with ectosymbiont assemblage structure. We found eight species of mites associated with different parts of the host’s integument: the feather dwelling mites Falculifer rostratus (Buchholz), Pterophagus columbae (Sugimoto) and Diplaegidia columbae (Buchholz); the skin mites: Harpyrhynchoides gallowayi Bochkov, OConnor and Klompen, H. columbae (Fain), and Ornithocheyletia hallae Smiley; and the nasal mites Tinaminyssus melloi (Castro) and T. columbae (Crossley). We also found five species of lice: Columbicola columbae (Linnaeus), Campanulotes compar (Burmeister), Coloceras tovornikae Tendeiro, Hohorstiella lata Piaget, and Bonomiella columbae Emerson.
