San Marcos, the county seat of Hays County, is located on Interstate Highway 35, between the cities of Austin and San Antonio. The region around Highway 35 is call the Texas Hill Country that contains some of the nicest land in the state.

Founded on the banks of the San Marcos River, the area is thought to be among the oldest continuously inhabited areas in the Americas. Mastodon bones and Clovis points, uncovered in an underwater archeological dig conducted by Dr. Joel Shiner of SMU, produced evidence that the Clovis Man lived in and around the headwaters of the San Marcos River over 12,000 years ago.

It was the site of several Spanish attempts at colonization before it became the center of an Anglo-American settlement in the area. The first such attempt, in 1755, saw the short-lived establishment of the San Xavier missions and the presidio of San Francisco Xavier. These were relocated less than a year later, and the headwaters of the San Marcos River remained unsettled for another half century.

In 1808, the Spanish governor of Texas, Manuel Antonio Cordero y Bustamante, sponsored the civil settlement of San Marcos de Neve near the same site, but floods and Indian raids prompted its abandonment in 1812.

In November 1846, Thomas G. McGehee became the first Anglo-American to settle in the vicinity of the , but William W. Moon has been identified as the original resident of the site that became San Marcos proper. Moon was soon joined by other former members of John C. Hays’ company of Texas Rangers and by Gen. Edward Burleson. Caton Erhard opened the first store and post office by 1847. The First Methodist Church began soon after.

The Texas Legislature organized Hays County on March 1, 1848, and designated the young community as the county seat. San Marcos already had 387 residents. In 1851, General Burleson, William Lindsey, and Dr. Eli T. Merriman took possession of a 640-acre section of the Juan Veramendi grant and laid out the town center. Tarbox and Brown stagecoaches linked San Marcos with Austin and San Antonio in 1848, and the town began its development as the commercial center for the cart trade between area farmers and ranchers and coastal commission merchants. It also became a center for ginning and milling local agricultural products.

Following the Civil War, the population of 742 in 1870 grew to 2,335 in the decade following the arrival of the International-Great Northern Railroad in 1881. During that decade, the town supported two banks, an opera house, and a variety of stores, saloons, and other businesses.

Cattle and cotton production in the area provided the basis for the gradual growth of San Marcos as a center for commerce and transportation.

The chartering in 1899 and subsequent opening in 1903 of Texas State and the San Marcos Baptist Academy in 1907 established education as an important local industry.

In the 1960s, the emergence of Aquarena Springs and Wonder Cave as important attractions helped the tourist industry become another reliable and growing source of income. Today, the tourism industry continues to be a major employer and economic contributor. Its Outlet Centers also are rated among the State's top three attractions and the San Marcos River continues to attract visitors.

San Marcos also boasts a job growth of 37% to outpace other Texas cities and is six times greater than the national average according to Forbes. The city's population is nearly 61,000, and the U.S. Census Bureau coined San Marcos as the fastest-growing city in the United States from 2013-15. The advantages from a growing population and job growth has allowed Texas State University to emerge as a major center for higher education.

The campus is home to over 260 buildings. Some, like Old Main, are as old as the university itself. Others, such as the Performing Arts Center, opened in 2014. An Undergraduate Academic Center opened in 2012, and additional new buildings are being completed. Over the years, the Legislature broadened the institution’s scope and changed its name, in succession, to Normal College, Southwest Texas State Teachers College, Southwest Texas State College, Southwest Texas State University, and in 2003 to Texas State University. Each name reflects the university’s growth from a small teacher preparation institution to a major, multipurpose university.

Texas State students first saw the Victory Star on campus in December 1936 when it was placed as a Christmas decoration on top of a 50,000-gallon water tower near where the Chemistry Building sits today. After the holidays, the star was taken down and put away. But in 1942, night watchman Elmer Titsworth found it and placed it on the water tower. He turned it on after the Bobcats won football games and created a new tradition.

When the water tower was replaced, the Victory Star tradition was moved to the top of the 138-foot- high Jackson Hall. The star was replaced by a new star that had a radius of six feet from the ceter to the tip of each arm. It contained two sets of lights -- an outside white outline and an inner colored set of lights. The white set was to be controlled by a photoelectric cell which could turn the lights on at sundown and off at sun-up. The colored lights were to operate on a manual switch. The student senate was expected to write a set of rules governing the circumstances under which the star would be illuminated.

VICTORY STAR

The new star was built by San Marcos sign-man Ivar Gunnarson, who expected to have it ready in time for the first game against Texas Lutheran on September 16, 1967. In its new location atop Jackson Hall, the Victory Star actually sits about 50 feet higher than its predecessor sat on the former water tower.

The five-pointed star atop Jackson Hall on Texas State’s highest hill can be seen from miles away and is lighted after all athletic victories, both home and away. This star is, of course, Texas State’s symbol, taken from our university seal. It is from the star that the school’s newspaper, The University Star (formerly named the Normal Star and the College Star), gets its name.
