    chapter 1 Introduction : Siting and Experiencing Divinity in Bengal-Vaishnavism background The anthropology of Hinduism has amply established that Hindus have a strong involvement with sacred geography. The Hindu sacred topography is dotted with innumerable pilgrimage places, and popu- lar Hinduism is abundant with spatial imaginings. Thus, Shiva and his partner, the mother goddess, live in the Himalayas; goddesses descend to earth as beautiful rivers; the goddess Kali’s body parts are imagined to have fallen in various sites of Hindu geography, sanctifying them as sacred centers; and yogis meditate in forests. Bengal similarly has a thriving culture of exalting sacred centers and pilgrimage places, one of the most important being the Navadvip-Mayapur sacred complex, Bengal’s greatest site of guru-centered Vaishnavite pilgrimage and devo- tional life. While one would ordinarily associate Hindu pilgrimage cen- ters with a single place, for instance, Ayodhya, Vrindavan, or Banaras, and while the anthropology of South Asian pilgrimage has largely been single-place-centered, Navadvip and Mayapur, situated on opposite banks of the river Ganga in the Nadia District of West Bengal, are both famous as the birthplace(s) of the medieval saint, Chaitanya (1486– 1533), who popularized Vaishnavism on the greatest scale in eastern India, and are thus of massive simultaneous importance to pilgrims in contemporary Bengal. Mahavidyalaya, Manikpara, Paschim Medinipur, West Bengal Abstract Jamdani sharee manufacturing has a long tradition of repute and excellence as a handicraft. Being a labour intensive handloom product it is produced with small amount of capital with substantial value addition. The present study seeks to examine the economics of Jamdani handloom product and labour process of production of jamdini cotton handloom product. Both gross profitability and net profitability in this industry are substantial for the independent units while gross income generated for the artisans working under different production organization is significant for livelihood. Variation in profitability across independent units and tied units is significantly explained by both labour productivity and capital productivity while that in units under cooperatives by capital productivity alone. For the industrial units taken together (60 units) across the three production organizations the profitability variation is explained by labour productivity, capital productivity and type of production organization. Production organization emerges as more significant than either labour productivity and capital productivity to explain the variation in profitability across the industrial units working under different production organizations. D. Block Krishnagar-II cover an area of 385.99 acres or 1562046.11 m2 or 1.56 km2. With an average depth of 1.81 meter they can provide scope for 3776155.383 m3 flood water. They provide space for spread of flood water over a vast area reducing the vertical level as well as the vulnerability of flood disaster. This spread of flood water over a vast area facilitates recharge of ground water, which again reduces the flood level. Spills acts as arteries and veins to transport silt laden flood water to Beels during flood and silt-free water during lean periods. These processes help in maintaining river depth of rivers and hasty pass of flood water again reducing the flood level. There are 11 wetlands (Recorded under B.L. & L.R.O, Krishnagar-II), having an average area more or equal to 5 acres or 20234.28 m2 have been considered for the present study. Data for this study were collected from the office of the B.L. & L.R.O, Krishnagar-II, District Fishery Office, Nadia and simple arithmetic calculation is made to come into conclusion that healthy Beels are worthy means for flood mitigation.
