  • Rui Lopes an Oasis in Europe: Hollywood Depictions of Portugal
Rui Lopes An Oasis in Europe: Hollywood Depictions of Portugal during World War II Abstract In the early 1940s, the wave of North American fiction films dealing with the Second World War devoted unprecedented attention to Portugal, then a neutral nation under a fascist-inspired dictatorship led by António de Oliveira Salazar. This article analyses the underlying discourse about Portugal in the stories filmed by Hollywood during this period. It focuses on three key motifs, namely the portrayal of the country as an escape point for refugees, as a gathering ground for spies, and as a safe haven from European war and oppression. Besides identifying common patterns in the narratives, the article seeks to contextualise them by taking into account the evolution of the scripts, as well as the feedback from the Production Code Administration and the Office of War Information. It also briefly contrasts the portrayal of Portugal with that of Spain, where a similar political regime was in place. It concludes that the combination of Hollywood’s formulaic narratives and Washington’s propaganda strategy resulted in a depiction of Portugal that was patronising yet mostly benevolent, romanticising local living conditions and dissociating the Salazar dictatorship from its fascist origins and practices. Keywords Cinema, Fascism, Hollywood, Portugal, World War II 1 The opening page of the final screenplay for the 1944 film The Conspirators1 evocatively established its setting: Lisbon in 1944… To the men of enslaved countries, a mirage of peace and freedom – a symbol of escape from the horror that has swallowed them. The lucky few who manage to reach it find a precarious security and, all around them, a thousand eyes ceaselessly watching, a thousand ears ceaselessly listening..

  • O Retrato De Dorian Gray: a Luta Entre O Bem E O Mal No Romance De Oscar Wilde E Na Pintura De Ivan Le Lorraine Albright
E como ferramenta de análise, utilizaremos a leitura do quadro The portrait of Dorian Gray, do artista americano Ivan Le Lorraine Albright. Palavras-chave: O retrato de Dorian Gray, Oscar Wilde, Ivan Le Lorraine Albright, Intersemiose, Ekphrasis, Fotografia, Pintura. Abstract This study is part of a research of an ekphrastic phenomenon occurring in novel The picture of Dorian Gray from the Irish writer, playwright and poet Oscar Wilde. In the first phase of our research we will analyze the manifestation of ekphrasis from the point of view indexical/ photographic and not iconic/pictorial, as commonly the novel The picture of Dorian Gray is searched. In the second part, we will analyze the crystallization of good or evil in the character of a young man in education under the influence of a biased adult, making an allegory with the crystallization of shadow and light on silver salts in the process of analog photography.

  • Rui Lopes an Oasis in Europe: Hollywood
[This paper has been accepted for publication by the Journal of Contemporary History. It can be cited from http://jch.sagepub.com/content/early/2016/01/08/0022009415609680] Rui Lopes An Oasis in Europe: Hollywood Depictions of Portugal during World War II Abstract In the early 1940s, the wave of North American fiction films dealing with the Second World War devoted unprecedented attention to Portugal, then a neutral nation under a fascist-inspired dictatorship led by António de Oliveira Salazar.

  • Students' Views of Higher Education in Their Transitions to Work in Portugal
1 Students' views of higher education in their transitions to work in Portugal Teresa Frances Pole-Baker Gouveia Institute of Education University of London January 2010 2 Students' views of higher education in their transitions to work in Portugal Higher education has grown to mass proportions in the past two decades in Portugal, with the political expectation that it will contribute to the knowledge economy and social change. However, the predominantly low skilled productive system has led to increasing graduate unemployment and underemployment. The central question in this research is what higher education signifies for students and graduates in this context. Higher education has the potential to change students' relationship with knowledge, developing critical thinking, autonomy and character (Barnett 1990). However, this potential for change depends on how individuals engage in it, according to their values and perspectives (Bloomer 2001). Moreover, knowledge is constructed contextually (Lave and Wenger 1991), and its relevance is not always clear when graduates start work. This longitudinal research therefore consisted of in-depth interviews with graduates to ascertain the meanings and values they attribute to higher education and how this changes in the transition to work. In this study, participants' view of higher education was narrow, focussing on how it affected their labour market opportunities, rather than as a place for personal development, gaining generic skills and critical engagement. This affected how they acted on their educational opportunities and the criteria by which they measured the validity of higher education after their transition to work. Moreover, labour market limitations meant that graduates who did not find work in areas directly related to their degree devalued their education.
