I moved to santa fe at the end of 1969 after getting out of the service at the suggestion of a friend in chicago. he had been here to work with the opera and felt the artistic community and I would be a good match. earlier I had attended the school of the art institute/university of chicago in a joint degree program from 1964-67. I was raised in a family in the construction industry, lotz excavating, and wished to be an architect, however I didn't have the perspective to get that degree and instead studied photography. photography had the ability to tell a truth that was not often expressed, and I was captured by that. photography became my medium and allowed me to earn a living and do my creative work as well. I was drafted into the army at the end of 1967. arriving here it felt like it was the right place for me, my mothers family were from vincenza italy, and the spanish culture here closely aligned it. I have lived in the historic district my whole time here except for four years. I built an adobe home out on buckman road with my partner which we sold in 1980, I then bought the small adobe home I currently live in at 353 east alameda. I have had a home occupation license since then and operated my photography business from here. I greatly appreciate the historic review board for having kept the history and appearance so alive for our city. I believe that without them our city would be totally different. and I would love to help the board continue this tradition. in the early 1970's I worked with the museum of navajo ceremonial art, and was on their board as we changed it to the wheelright museum. we wished to make it more interactive, showing contemporary work and create more income by opening the case trading post, and I believe the museum is doing well. during the aids epidemic I worked with p.o.c.a.f.,an organization that worked to get information out to the hispanic and native communitees about how to avoid infection. I worked with the rodeo de santa fe for many years and was on their land board, and at the end of governor richardsons term was appointed to a board to develop a museum dedicated to new mexican veterans. It was to be part of the museums of 6 new mexico. It ended when our governor felt it was money that we did not have to spend. hopefully it will be considered in the future. the history of the military and warriors is extraordinary in our state. I am retired and find that I now have time to give back to our city and feel that it would be a good fit. I do know that it can be difficult work, sometimes working with conflicting interests, but I think I can work with that. thank you for any consideration, if you have questions please have your representative contact me. sincerely, herbert a lotz 7 Flynn Larson Education Fall 2013-Fall 2016 B.A., Honors, History of Art and Museum Studies The Florida State University Tallahassee, FL.
