The Kamloops Blazers were also WHL champions in 1984, 1986 and 1990. The Memorial Cup trophy is a symbol of the championship of the Canadian Hockey League (CHL). Dating back to 1919, the Memorial Cup was established by Captain James T. Sutherland to honour those who gave their lives during World War I. It was rededicated during the 2010 tournament to honour all soldiers who died fighting for Canada in any conflict. “The Memorial Cup Anniversary is a reminder of the heart within our organization, the community and those that helped to get us where we are today.” Kamloops Blazers co-owner Tom Gaglardi City of Kamloops | Regular Council Meeting 2019 CITIZEN SATISFACTION SURVEY William Schatten, CMRP / Vice President Research and Analytics; and Gary Milkaovic, Communication Coordinator, Forum Research Inc. Roseto Valfortore lies one hundred miles southeast of Rome in the Apennine foothills of the Italian province of Foggia. In the style of medieval villages, the town is orga- nized around a large central square. Facing the square is the Palazzo Marchesale, the palace of the Saggese family, once the great landowner of those parts. An archway to one side leads to a church, the Madonna del Carmine — Our Lady of Mount Carmine. Narrow stone steps run up the hill- side, fl anked by closely clustered two-story stone houses with red-tile roofs. 3 8813731373 ii-x-x 0001-31001-310 rr10tr.indd10tr.indd 3 99/22/08/22/08 55:07:39:07:39 PPMM outliers For centuries, the paesani of Roseto worked in the marble quarries in the surrounding hills, or cultivated the fi elds in the terraced valley below, walking four and fi ve miles down the mountain in the morning and then mak- ing the long journey back up the hill at night. One warm, spring day in May of 2007, the Medicine Hat Tigers and the Vancouver Giants met for the Memorial Cup hockey championships in Vancouver, British Colum bia. The Tigers and the Giants were the two :finest teams in the Canadian Hockey League, which in turn is the :finest junior hockey league in the world. These were the future stars of the sport-seventeen-, eighteen-, and nineteen year-aids who had been skating and shooting pucks since they were barely more than toddlers. The game was broadcast on Canadian national televi sion. Up and down the streets of downtown Vancouver, Memorial Cup banners hung from the lampposts. The \ ' arena was packed. A long red carpet was rolled out on the ice, and the announcer introduced the ga~e's dignitar ies. First came the premier of British Columbia, Gordon Campbell. • Sun Valley Suns Keep BDHL Title 5-4 Over Moose
Sun Valley Suns keep BDHL title 5-4 over Moose Robinson scores game winner at Snow King By JEFF CORDES Express Staff Writer Snow King Center was jam-packed, throbbing with music and drink. It was frigid and the only parking to be found was between high snowbanks and squeezed tightly along the road. The cowboy atmosphere was electric for Saturday’s Black Diamond Hockey League tournament championship game between the defending champion Sun Valley Suns and Jackson Hole (Wyo.) Moose. About two-and-a-half hours after the opening faceoff, the great majority of the estimated 2,000 spectators left the rink subdued and disappointed. The Suns celebrated at mid-ice and readied the champagne toast after silencing the Moose 5-4. Suns second-year do-everything forward/defenseman DJ Robinson, who scored the game-winning goal, said about the lack of Wyoming post-game noise, “It’s good to hear the crickets in that building.” Five different Sun Valley Suns players including Robinson scored goals Saturday during the 5-4 win over the host Moose. It gave the Suns an unprecedented second straight BDHL tournament title. Incredibly given the rich and fiery 19-year, 82-game history between the ski resort hockey programs, there wasn’t a single power play in the game. Only four penalty minutes were whistled—matching roughing minors. Coach John Burke’s Suns became the first team in the five-year history of the BDHL tournament to win two consecutive Joe Casey Memorial Cups, and the first to win the title playing away from home.

  • The Matthew Effect
CHAPTER ONE The Matthew Effect "FOR UNTO EVERYONE THAT HATH SHALL BE GIVEN, AND HE SHALL HAVE ABUNDANCE, BUT FROM HIM THAT HATH NOT SHALL BE TAKEN AWAY EVEN THAT WHICH HE HATH." — MATTHEW 25:29 1. One warm, spring day in May of 2007,tne Medicine Hat Tigers and the Vancouver Giants met for the Memorial Cup hockey championships in Vancouver, British Colum bia. The Tigers and the Giants were the two finest teams in the Canadian Hockey League, which in turn is the finest junior hockey league in the world. These were the future stars of the sport—seventeen-, eighteen-, and nineteen- year-olds who had been skating and shooting pucks since they were barely more than toddlers. The game was broadcast on Canadian national televi sion. Up and down the streets of downtown Vancouver, Memorial Cup banners hung from the lampposts. The arena was packed. A long red carpet was rolled out on the ice, and the announcer introduced the game's dignitar ies. First came the premier of British Columbia, Gordon Campbell. Then, amid tumultuous applause, out walked 15 OUTLIERS Gordie Howe, one of the legends of the game. "Ladies and gentlemen," the announcer boomed. "Mr. Hockey!" For the next sixty minutes, the two teams played spir ited, aggressive hockey. Vancouver scored first, early in the second period, on a rebound by Mario Bliznak. Late in the second period, it was Medicine Hat's turn, as the team's scoring leader, Darren Helm, fired a quick shot past Vancouver's goalie, Tyson Sexsmith. Vancouver answered in the third period, scoring the game's deciding goal, and then, when Medicine Hat pulled its goalie in desperation, Vancouver scored a third time.
