Arkansas Association of Career and Technical Education Hot Springs Civic and Convention Center 134 Convention Boulevard Hot Springs, AR 71901

Dear Colleagues:

Welcome to Hot Springs and this year’s Arkansas Association of Career and Technical Education Professional Development Conference. The conference organizers have worked very hard to provide you with the sessions and workshops you need as a career and technical education professional.

“Recognizing Classroom Innovators” is an appropriate theme for this year’s conference. As leaders in your field, your job is to prepare students for meaningful work through career and technical education. In order to ensure that students have the skills needed for their respective careers, CTE instructors must create innovative hands-on activities and opportunities that guarantee success for college and career readiness.

Being innovative in your teaching and providing real-world experiences are vitally important to our business and industry in Arkansas and the nation. The growth of our economy depends on a highly- skilled workforce, and the competition for highly-skilled employees is real. This conference has a host of speakers and presenters who know what it takes to supply tomorrow’s workforce.

Thank you for your commitment to career and technical education. Your students are depending on you to provide them with the skills they need to be successful. Our business and industry leaders in Arkansas are depending on you to provide them with students ready for work.

I wish you a great conference and an even better 2015-16 school year.

Sincerely,

Charisse Childers, Ph.D. Director

Greetings Arkansas ACTE Members and Guests!

Welcome to the 2015 Arkansas Career and Technical Education Summer Conference. On this day last year we were all dealing with the loss of our friend and co-worker Angela Scott. Thanks to the hard work of the Arkansas ACTE Executive Committee, the ACTE Board of Directors, and the ACE staff, Angela’s 2014 Summer Conference was a success. Today, we still have a void in our hearts and in our organization that will never be filled. Angela would insist that we move forward and take care of business. That is just what Harry, Ross, Linda, and the entire ACTE board of directors have done.

The 2015 Conference has been planned to provide the Arkansas CTE Educator with the information and resources necessary for a successful 2015-16 school year. Today, you will hear about the exciting new changes in education from the leadership of both the Department of Career Education and the Arkansas Department of Education. Tuesday, our sessions will focus on specific content areas. I hope you will attend as many of these sessions as time allows. Please fill out the on-line post-conference survey on our website and print out your professional development certificate. The survey and certificate will be available on-line throughout the month of August. Your input will enable us to make the 2016 Conference even better.

Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to serve as your 2015 ACTE President. This has been both the most rewarding and most challenging year of my educational career. I am looking forward to the coming year knowing that Arkansas ACTE will be in the capable hands of Ross White, who has already shown great leadership as ACTE President-elect.

Enjoy the conference and have a great 2015-16 school year.

May God richly bless you,

Dave Fisher Dave Fisher 2015 Arkansas ACTE President

In 1987, he had the opportunity to join the Technology Center System as an administrative intern at Meridian Technology Center and worked 13 years in various administrative capacities at the school. During his tenure at Meridian Technology Center, he also completed both his master’s and doctoral degrees from Oklahoma State University. In 2000, Dr. Major was selected as the Superintendent/CEO of Pioneer Technology Center, the position held before returning to Meridian Technology Center in November 2008 as Superintendent/CEO.

Throughout his career, Dr. Major has participated in many local boards as well as state and national associations. He has held offices in the Oklahoma Technology Center Superintendents’ Association, the Oklahoma Council of Local Administrator, the Oklahoma Association of Career and Technical Education and the National Council of Local Administrators for Career and Technical Education. Arkansas ACTE President-Elect Candidate

For the past 18 years, I have been an educator in Career and Technical Education. An honor graduate from the University of Arkansas, my Master’s work is in the field of Human Resource and Workforce Development Education. I believe it is our job to not just educate students, but to fully develop our greatest resource—our people. And that’s what ACTE does—we develop our greatest resource—our teachers. I am a National Board Certified Teacher in Career and Technical Education. I am a past JAG Specialist and Internship Coordinator, implementing both of those programs at Valley Springs High School. Committed to health and physical education, I spent seven years as adjunct faculty, teaching dance at North Arkansas College.

Never the teacher to be out front speaking, I was always content to just “do my own thing” in the classroom, developing leadership opportunities for my students on the local level. But as I step into new roles at the Department of Career Education, I have come to realize that leading locally is not enough. As our new Director, Dr. Childers has said, we have to tell our story. In fact, we may need to stand on a soapbox, with a microphone, and shout our story! We were all taught that bragging is not a good thing, but I might argue that it’s a GREAT thing! We need to brag on our programs, our students, our accomplishments, and ourselves. We need to shout to the world that we, the members of ACTE, are doing absolutely everything we can to promote effective programs that work towards filling that middle skills gap we keep talking about.
