FAITH FORMATION Dear Parishioners, First Banns When St. Kateri Parish was established two years ago with the merging of three churches, one of the biggest challenges was aligning Victoria Deak & Eric Schutz two Faith Formation programs to be consistent with each other. This can Saint Bridget Church September 21st, 2019 be very challenging, especially because the churches are in three differ- ent towns. Imagine belonging to a three-branch Credit Union where eve- rything was done differently in each office! We cannot have that be the Our Lady of Calvary Retreat Book case with our Faith Formation program. Club in Farmington is returning for a second During the first year of the newly formed parish, I allowed the season! It is a different kind of book club religious education programs to run independently, as had been the case. because the focus is on spirituality. Last year, we merged the programs to one location at Sacred Heart, The OLC Book Club meets on the where the G.I.F.T. program was in place and which met monthly. This year I would like to tweak the program to allot additional Sisters Mary O’Brien, CP, and Anna Marie Becker, CP, are the sessions as I do not believe that meeting once a month for an hour is moderators. Long-time retreatants will remember Sister Anna Marie, adequate. Even a traditional program of 24 weeks amounts to 24 hours whom we are happy to welcome back to OLC after nearly twenty years of per year, which is one day of faith formation in the life of your child! I’m service at a retreat center in Tennessee. sure you will agree that is not enough. The change I plan to implement is Come and see. Share your insights and your observations, your not drastic. The program will basically be the same with some minor questions, ʎ and your enthusiasms. The Story of Pope Saint Gregory The Great

Gregory was the prefect of Rome before he was 30. After five years in office he resigned, founded six monasteries on his Sicilian estate, and became a Benedictine monk in his own home at Rome. Ordained a priest, Gregory became one of the pope’s seven deacons, and also served six years in the East as papal representative in Constantinople. He was recalled to become abbot, but at the age of 50 was elected pope by the clergy and people of Rome. Gregory was direct and firm. He removed unworthy priests from office, forbade taking money for many ser- vices, emptied the papal treasury to ransom prisoners of the Lombards and to care for persecuted Jews and the vic- tims of plague and famine. He was very concerned about the conversion of England, sending 40 monks from his own monastery. He is known for his reform of the liturgy, and for strengthening respect for doctrine. Whether he was largely responsible for the revision of “Gregorian” chant is dis- puted. Gregory lived in a time of perpetual strife with in- vading Lombards and difficult relations with the East. When Rome itself was under attack, he interviewed the Lombard king. His book, Pastoral Care , on the duties and qualities of a bishop, was read for centuries after his death. He de- scribed bishops mainly as physicians whose main duties were preaching and the enforcement of discipline. In his own down-to-earth preaching, Gregory was skilled at apply- ing the daily Gospel to the needs of his listeners. Called “the Great,” Gregory has been given a place with Augustine, , and , as one of the four key doctors of the Western Church. An Anglican historian has written: “It is impossible to conceive what would have been the confusion, the law- lessness, the chaotic state of the Middle Ages without the medieval papacy; and of the medieval papacy, the real fa- ther is Gregory the Great.”
