KATE Mid-30’s, beautiful, sophisticated, perceptive, deceased. CHRISSY Early 20’s, cute, upbeat, eager, passionate. EDDIE Late 30’s, jaded, decadent, addicted to just about everything. CHEKHOV Mid 40’s, wise, eccentric, crotchety, deceased. SETTING Time: The present. Place: New York City, various locations; A lake, various times and seasons. Author’s notes: This play was written as a dark romantic comedy, accent on the comedy. As such, the default tempo for the play should be brisk and lively, pausing or stopping only as necessary to reflect the deeper, more serious moments. Scene transitions should occur as smoothly as possible with a minimum of set and prop handling to ensure that the story keeps moving apace. In essence the play should avoid the trap of over-indulging in the darker currents of the story and becoming labored or ponderous. As this play explores two alternating states of mind – dreams and reality – it is intended that the design elements establish a distinctive motif for each. For example, there might be a magical, sparkling quality to the lighting to represent the water reflecting off of the lake in the dream scenes, while the real life apartment scenes might have a grittier, more somber feel especially as most of these scenes occur at night. Similarly, the dream scenes might be accompanied by a recurring ethereal theme, or “dreamscape,” which would shift in tone from light and magical to something more ominous, reflecting the main character’s psychological journey. -

Peay Vineyards Spring 2012 Issue 19 2010 Vintage: Superb, Pure & Expressive wines. All 3 cases made! I am a farmer. Other than during harvest when I spend 40 days straight in my Carhartt workpants, this would not be abundantly obvious by just looking at me. But my account- ant knows it. So does my stomach doctor. They witness the ups and downs that befall someone whose livelihood is tied to agriculture. I mentioned in an earlier newsletter that I had attained a Zen state about the weather and its effect on my business. Well, let’s just say the 2010 vintage created ripples in the calm of my mind. A ripple shaped somewhat like a tsunami. The growing season started out wet and cool and stayed that way through flowering. As a result we set only about 60% of our normal crop load - which is on average already fright- fully low. Fall temperatures were also cool but interrupted by a heat wave in the middle of September that fortunately did not adversely affect us too greatly and provided much needed ripening. We picked the little fruit we had a few weeks later than normal and our yields came in around 1 ton per acre depending on the variety. As a result our total pro- duction dropped in half. Ouch. So, what does this mean for you (or, more to the point, why should you care?) Well, first there is not much wine to go around this year. We only made 380 cases of 2010 Pomarium Pinot noir, for example. This scarcity is compounded by the fact that we made superb wines that I have a feeling will be much lauded. -

Volume 1, Issue 1 Firearms Seizures and Trafficking: A «Local» Phenomenon NICHOLAS MARSH1 Abstract This article presents findings from the 2015 UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Study on firearms trafficking, which was based upon information collected from 48 governments. It outlines the methodology and sources used in the UNODC Study, and discusses their strengths and limitations. The UNODC Study is then located within three wider bodies of research on firearms trafficking. Three key findings from data reported by the states that took part in the Study are summarized. In those states firearms trafficking is mostly small scale and local – occurring across neighbouring borders or within regions. Trafficked firearms tend to be obtained by people engaged in other forms of criminal activity. In many states there is a marked lack of capacity to collect and analyse data on firearms trafficking. These findings suggest the need to re-evaluate how firearms trafficking is often perceived.
