A Delicate Balance Negotiating Isolation and Globalization in the Burmese Performing Arts Catherine Diamond If you walk on and on, you get to your destination. If you question much, you get your information. If you do not sleep and idle, you preserve your life! (Maung Htin Aung 1959:87) So go the three lines of wisdom offered to the lazy student Maung Pauk Khaing in the well- known eponymous folk tale. A group of impoverished village youngsters, led by their teacher Daw Khin Thida, adapted the tale in 2007 in their first attempt to perform a play. From a well-to-do family that does not understand her philanthropic impulses, Khin Thida, an English teacher by profession, works at her free school in Insein, a suburb of Yangon (Rangoon) infamous for its prison. The shy students practiced first in Burmese for their village audience, and then in English for some foreign donors who were coming to visit the school. Khin Thida has also bought land in Bagan (Pagan) and is building a culture center there, hoping to attract the street children who currently pander to tourists at the site’s immense network of temples. Contemporary Dance Dance 3-4 -Is a genre of dance performance that developed during the mid-twentieth century - Has grown to become one of the dominant genres for formally trained dancers throughout the world, with particularly strong popularity in the U.S. and Europe. -Although originally informed by and borrowing from classical, modern, and jazz styles, it has since come to incorporate elements from many styles of dance. Due to its technical similarities, it is often perceived to be closely related to modern dance, ballet, and other classical concert dance styles. -It also employs contract-release, floor work, fall and recovery, and improvisation characteristics of modern dance. -Involves exploration of unpredictable changes in rhythm, speed, and direction. -Sometimes incorporates elements of non-western dance cultures, such as elements from African dance including bent knees, or movements from the Japanese contemporary dance, Butoh. -Contemporary dance draws on both classical ballet and modern dance -Merce Cunningham is considered to be the first choreographer to "develop an independent attitude towards modern dance" and defy the ideas that were established by it. -Cunningham formed the Merce Cunningham Dance Company in 1953 and went on to create more than one hundred and fifty works for the company, many of which have been performed internationally by ballet and modern dance companies. -There is usually a choreographer who makes the creative decisions and decides whether the piece is an abstract or a narrative one. -Choreography is determined based on its relation to the music or sounds that is danced to. . -

His dances em- body the deeply-felt passions of a true master. Rooted in the American experience, he has choreographed a body of work imbued with radiant optimism and poignancy. His appreciation of human wit and heroism in the face of pain and loss, and his faith in redemptive powers of love endow his dances with their originality and dramatic power. Donald McKayle has created a repertory of American dance that instructs the heart. -Inscription on Samuel H. Scripps/American Dance Festival Award orld-renowned choreographer and UCI Professor of Dance Donald McKayle received the prestigious Samuel H. Scripps/American Dance Festival WAward, “established to honor the great choreographers who have dedicated their lives and talent to the creation of our modern dance heritage,” in 1992. The “Sammy” was awarded to McKayle for a lifetime of performing, teaching and creating American modern dance, an “infinite journey” of both creativity and teaching. Infinite Journey is the title of a concert dance piece McKayle created in 1991 to honor the life of a former student; the title also befits McKayle’s own life. McKayle began his career in New York City, initially studying dance with the New Dance Group and later dancing professionally for noted choreographers such as Merce Cunningham, Martha Graham, Sophie Maslow, and Anna Sokolow. -

Master Thesis Re-imagining Contemporary Choreography: Exploring choreographic practices in the post-moving era NAME: ELENA NOVAKOVITS STUDENT NUMBER: 4086856 Supervisor: Laura Karreman Second reader: Chiel Kattenbelt Master Contemporary Theatre, Dance and Dramaturgy Utrecht University August 2018 1 Abstract Focusing on the European dance scene after the mid-1990s a great emergence of dance practitioners redefined what dance could be by enlarging their creative methods, tools and objects. The established incessant movement was no longer considered to be the central element of composition. Similar artistic strategies still prevail up to the present, where the boundaries seem to be expanding ever more. Stimulated by this, in my thesis I look at the latest choreographic practices and their implications on a post-moving era. Drawing on André Lepecki’s Exhausting Dance: Performance and the Politics of Movement (2006), Efrosini’s Protopapa PhD “Possibilising dance: a space for thinking in choreography” (2009) and Bojana Cvejić’s Choreographing Problems: Expressive Concepts in European Contemporary Dance and Performance (2015) I examine the expanded choreographic practices in the following choreographic works: 69 Positions (2014) by Mette Ingvartsen and Time has fallen asleep in the afternoon sunshine (2010) by Mette Edvardsen. My hypothesis is that Ingvartsen and Edvardsen’s performances are exemplary of these developments. On the performance analysis of these works, I have explored what they have presented as singular choreographic practices through their artistic strategies by activating specific tools and methods. The idea of ‘language choreography’ is discussed as a common place for both. In conclusion, my main aim has been to analyse and evaluate how contemporary choreography in this post-moving era has been redefined in these works and what the resulting implications are for making, performing and attending. -

It outlines the contribution of the enthusiastic reformers of character dance - A.F. Bekefi, F.I. Kshesinki, A.V. Shiryaeva, A.I. Bocharova and A.V. Lapukhov. Outstanding dancers, and later teachers, they stood at the origins of the creation of a system for teaching character dance, brought up more than one generation of dancers who continued the formation of folk stage dance as one of the main subjects of a cycle of special disciplines in the vocational training system in ballet schools. Taiwanese Eyes on the Modern: Cold War Dance Diplomacy and American Modern Dances in Taiwan, 1950–1980 Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Tsung-Hsin Lee, M.A. Graduate Program in Dance Studies The Ohio State University 2020 Dissertation Committee Hannah Kosstrin, Advisor Harmony Bench Danielle Fosler-Lussier Morgan Liu Copyrighted by Tsung-Hsin Lee 2020 2 Abstract This dissertation “Taiwanese Eyes on the Modern: Cold War Dance Diplomacy and American Modern Dances in Taiwan, 1950–1980” examines the transnational history of American modern dance between the United States and Taiwan during the Cold War era. From the 1950s to the 1980s, the Carmen De Lavallade-Alvin Ailey, José Limón, Paul Taylor, Martha Graham, and Alwin Nikolais dance companies toured to Taiwan under the auspices of the U.S. State Department. At the same time, Chinese American choreographers Al Chungliang Huang and Yen Lu Wong also visited Taiwan, teaching and presenting American modern dance. These visits served as diplomatic gestures between the members of the so-called Free World led by the U.S. Taiwanese audiences perceived American dance modernity through mixed interpretations under the Cold War rhetoric of freedom that the U.S. sold and disseminated through dance diplomacy. I explore the heterogeneous shaping forces from multiple engaging individuals and institutions that assemble this diplomatic history of dance, resulting in outcomes influencing dance histories of the U.S. and Taiwan for different ends. I argue that Taiwanese audiences interpreted American dance modernity as a means of embodiment to advocate for freedom and social change. -

The festival utilizes all three theater and gallery spaces at Abrons and includes off-site engagements presented by Sunday Sessions at MoMA PS1, and Gibney Dance Center to construct a composition of dance, theater, music theater, performance and hybrid performative works featuring four world premieres, six U.S. premieres, three New York premieres, six engagements and one special-event work in progress presentation for a total of sixty-seven performances of nineteen productions over eleven days. Featuring artists from across the U.S. with a concentration of New York makers and a small selection of international artists, American Realness offers audiences local, national, and international perspectives on the complicated and wondrous world we inhabit. Through visceral, visual, and text-based explorations of perception, sensation, form and attention, artists expose issues and questions around identity, ritual, blackness, history, pop-culture, futurity, and consumption in an American-focused, globally-minded context.
