This pack contains information that will provide facts and descriptions of the life of a boater and a concise history of canals. Contents: Why at Batchworth? A short history of the Canal at Batchworth The Grand Junction Canal Life on a narrow boat – An introduction Types of boat About the boats Cargoes The work on the boats – The Cabin; Cooking and eating; Washing and cleaning; Clothing; Canal Children; School; Leisure Time Horse power Activity Sheet for Classroom Batchworth Lock – Why Here? http://www.rwt.org.uk/education/learningatthelock/Teachers Information-pack Three rivers meet at Batchworth – the Gade, the Colne and the Chess. Before engines were invented the water from the river Colne was used to turn a large mill wheel which powered the machinery inside the first building at Batchworth – Batchworth Mill. 200 years ago workmen turned the river Colne at Batchworth into a canal by building a lock and weir and raising the water level so that it could be used by narrow boats to carry cargoes between London and Birmingham.

Known as the East of England Forecasting model, it is a computer-based set of data for the common variables and a system for modelling the inter-relationships between these variables, with the capacity to generate forecasts and scenarios for each the variables at regional and local scales. The model is constructed primarily on an Excel spreadsheet and can thus be run on any personal computer. The economic relationships underpinning the model were primarily derived from Oxford Economics commercially available Regional Economic Model. Additional estimation at a local level was carried out for this project and applied to the Excel model. A full description of the model is contained in the final report for the EEDA project ‘East of England: Joint Modelling for the RES and RSS’, on the EEDA website at www.eeda.org.uk/files/Joint_RES-RSS_modelling_final.pdf.

  • Definitive Map Update
Definitive Map update Richard Cuthbert, Definitive Map & Enforcement, Herts CC CRoW department The list of recent DM cases is very short, the requirement to post notices and adverts being severely curtailed during lockdown and not all district and borough councils being back to normal yet. The list below therefore shows other activity as well. We would therefore ask all readers to keep checking the HertsCC RoW pages to ensure they see Notices, and copies of Orders which can be requested directly from us. The five-yearly DM update scheduled for 2020 is heavily delayed and may not happen until 2021. (It will not be published without the changes at Tyttenhager being included.) It would be very useful to know how much demand there is for the update, as we have the option of skipping this one and perhaps issuing a 10-yearly update in the future. Responses very welcome: [email protected] Dacorum A series of orders have been confirmed affecting the recorded paths in the neighbourhood of Betlow Farm in Tring Rural parish. The effect is to remove some cross field paths and replace them with paths around the field boundaries. (Ref DAC/144) As the planning inspectorate has rejected a proposal to deregister and exchange part of the land on Boxmoor Common near Hemel Hempstead we shall not make the proposed order for a new footpath. (Ref DAC/165/DED) We have concluded that the evidence is sufficient for us to make orders to record public rights of way in the following three cases. Note that this is the first stage in the process.
