BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

The Charles A. Johnston Collection contains materials related to the Johnston family of Leesburg, VA and other families related through marriage. Individuals who appear prominently within the collection are highlighted in boldface to aid researchers.

Charles Anthony Johnston (1806-1877) was born in Alexandria City, VA. He purchased the house at 21 West Loudoun Street (now 103 Loudoun Street SW) in Leesburg in 1839 and lived there until his death. He operated a dry goods and grocery store next door as well as two hat businesses. An article appearing in the Metro Virginia News explains that during the Civil War, Union troops ransacked the store next to the 21 West Loudoun Street home and the house itself. On other occasions, Confederate troops from Mississippi visited the home to dance with Charles A. Johnston’s daughters, including Mary Elizabeth Johnston [hereafter referred to as Lizzie Johnston] (1841-1920).

Johnston married his wife, Mary Rebecca Boss (1820-1905), in Leesburg on 13 September 1838. She was born in Leesburg, VA, the eldest daughter of Samuel M. Boss (1797-1872) and Elizabeth Foreman Fox Boss (1802-1874). Samuel M. Boss operated a mercantile store on King Street in Leesburg. One of her ten siblings, Private James Peter Boss (1842-1863), died from wounds received during the Battle of Gettysburg. Another sibling, Margaret Ann Boss (1824- 1884) married William Cline, Jr. (1818-1889), joining a Leesburg family that is covered extensively in this collection.

William Cline Jr. was born in Loudoun County, VA. He and his father, William Cline, Sr. (1780-1843) operated Cline & Sons Hardware on Market Street in Leesburg. William Cline Jr.’s oldest son, Charles Asbury Cline (1844-1914), married Jennie Bradford Roatch (1846-1928) and continued the family business. They lived in a house at the corner of Market and Wirt streets in Leesburg. Charles and Jennie Cline’s daughter, Jennie Bradford Cline (1867- 1957), or “Cousin Jen”, was very close to the Johnston family. Bertha Louise Cline (fl.1865-1952), Jennie Bradford Cline’s sister, married Francis Henney Smith Morrison (1864-1929). Their son, Henry Terry Morrison (1896-1978) retired as a Brigadier General in the United States Air Force.

Samuel John Johnston [hereafter referred to as S.J. Johnston] (1853-1925), one of Charles and Mary Elizabeth Johnston’s ten children, was born in Leesburg, VA. For years he operated a jewelry and watchmaking business on King Street. He later served as Leesburg town treasurer from 1902-1909 and held patents on numerous inventions.

3

S.J. Johnston married Maria Louise Bayne (1865-1899) on 3 November 1883. She grew up in Baltimore, MD and was the daughter of Patterson Bayne (1824- 1900) and Mary Louise Latham Bayne (1836-1865). Soon after marrying, S.J. and Maria Louise Johnston moved to a house at the corner of Wirt and Loudoun streets in Leesburg that was built by the Norris Brothers. The home no longer stands. Mrs. Johnston gave birth to ten children, two of whom died as infants. Maria Louise Bayne Johnston died at the young age of 35.

S.J. Johnston married Beulah Marvin Neel (1878-1975), on 12 June 1901. She was born in Baltimore, MD and is referred to as “Granny” in this collection. Her parents were Abner Allen Preston Neel (1841-1909) and Alice Anderson Neel (1847-1878), and together they had five children. Mrs. Beulah Neel Johnston’s great grandfather, Samuel Williams was given a land grant of 420 acres in Greenbrier County, VA in 1818 for his service as an officer during the Revolutionary War. The original grant is included in this collection. Mrs. Beulah Marvin Neel was a teacher in Rippon, WV before marriage.

S.J. and Beulah Johnston had five children, only one of whom survived past the age of five. The brief lives of Stuart James Johnston (1902-1907), Alice Rebekah Johnston (1906-1910) and Beulah Neel Johnston (1916-1919) are highlighted extensively in this collection. Their middle child, John Allen Johnston (1911-2002), lived in the S.J. Johnston house until S.J. Johnston’s death in 1925. After S.J. Johnston’s death, Mrs. Beulah Neel Johnston purchased the 21 West Loudoun Street house previously owned by Charles A. Johnston.

John Allen Johnston attended Leesburg High School, The Georgia Institute of Technology and Washington and Lee University. He worked with the Rural Electric Administration in Loudoun, Fauquier and Prince William counties, was a real estate agent, secretary of the James Monroe Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution, Rotary Club president and breeder and owner of several thoroughbred race horses. He married Helen Frances Matthews (1921-2006) on 19 June 1943 at the Leesburg Presbyterian Church.

Helen Frances Matthews was the only child of Charles Balthrope Matthews, Jr. (1882-1926) and Cecile Gray Hutchison Matthews (1886-1971). Charles Balthrope Matthews, Jr.’s parents, Charles Balthrope Matthews Sr. (1851- 1921) and Rosalia Settle Elgin Matthews (1852-1912), owned Sleepy Hollow Farm, near Aldie, VA. Charles Balthrope Matthews, Jr. worked at the Loudoun National Bank in Leesburg for many years. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Balthrope Matthews, Jr. and Helen Frances Matthews lived in a home at 46 Morven Park Road in Leesburg.

Cecile Gray Hutchison Matthews was the daughter of Charles Lewis Hutchison (1843-1917) and Mary L. Mankin Hutchison (1848-1923) of Herndon. Like others in his family, Charles L. Hutchison served the community as postmaster at

4

Pleasant Valley beginning in 1882, and later was postmaster at Arcola. Charles L. Hutchison’s father was Melville Barbour Hutchison (1809-1893).

Helen Frances Matthews attended Leesburg High School and then Madison College. After marrying, she worked as a secretary at the People’s National Bank, and later for lawyer Wilbur C. Hall (1892-1972). She later completed graduate school at George Washington University, opening and operating Mrs. John Allen Johnston’s School on South King Street in Leesburg from 1952 to 1960. She then served as head teacher at the National Children’s Rehabilitation Center in Leesburg from 1959 to 1967 and became principal at Herndon Elementary School. John Allen and Helen Frances Matthews Johnston lived with their two boys, Allen Balthrope Johnston (b. 1951) and Charles Anthony Johnston (b. 1958), on Fairview Street in Leesburg (the current address is 113 Rosebrook Court, NW).

Other Notable Figures

Dr. John Gibson (1876-1947) offered medical services to members of the Leesburg community for years. He was instrumental in opening Leesburg’s first hospital in 1912 and attained a partial interest in White’s Ferry in 1946.

Loudoun County branched off from Fairfax County in 1757 and was named after John Campbell (1705-1782), the 4th Earl of Loudoun. He was a Scottish nobleman, the titular governor of Virginia from 1756-1758 and a former Commander in Chief of the British armed forces in Virginia. In April, 1976 and December, 1980, Barbara Huddleston Abney-Hastings (1919-2002), 13th Countess of Loudoun, visited Loudoun County, VA. Her visits are in this collection.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The Charles A. Johnston Collection contains family papers and artifacts of the Johnston family of Leesburg. The Charles A. Johnston Collection incorporates archives, manuscript materials, rare books, photographs and film.

This collection offers a view of life in Leesburg and Loudoun County from the late 1700s through the 20th century, giving the modern researcher a rare glimpse into how daily life was lived. Games, toys, report cards and children’s books shed light on how the Johnston children filled their days. Likewise, business records, patents, recipes, post cards, deeds and related items shed light on the Johnston family, their friends and the businesses they associated with on a daily basis. Detailed descriptions, photographs, artifacts and floor plans inform us about the Johnston’s homes. Items like S.J. Johnston’s ledger, kept during the period in which he served as Leesburg’s mayor, and Lizzie Johnston’s autograph album, signed by visiting Confederate troops from Mississippi, speak volumes about Leesburg’s unique and vibrant past.

The donor of the collection organized the materials based on the families who are highlighted, the periods during which they lived and the homes they inhabited. To retain the donor’s vision for the collection, the original order has been maintained. The collection is not organized in chronological order. The collection will remain open as the donor continues to donate material.

The donor created information sheets, providing an overview of every item in the collection. The sheets provide background on the Johnston family, individuals in the Leesburg community and the homes and businesses in which they lived and worked. Stories that had been passed down from family member to family member are included as well. The digital content referenced in the information sheets can be located by accessing the Audio Visual index.

Non-manuscript materials, artifacts and fragile or oversized manuscript items are stored separately. In these boxes, researchers will find many of the original items that are highlighted on the information sheets provided by the donor. The organization of these materials mirror the order of the information sheets referenced above.

The collection includes genealogical information focusing on the Johnston, Boss, Neel, Matthews, Mankin, Light, Cline and Hutchison families.

Bound volumes included in the collection can be located by accessing the related Bound Volume index.
