SHREWSBURY CLUB

Minutes of AGM: 9th November 2016 @ Clubhouse @ 7.30pm.

Present : As listed on the Attendance sheet attached (30no)

1. Apologies: Kevin Bland, Simon & Shelley Edwards, John Bennett, Laurence Fletcher, Josh Anders, Dan Manders, Tom Somerville.

Ref Minutes 2 Minutes of Previous AGM Approval of 2015 AGM Minutes proposed by Ed Griggs and Seconded by Kevin Morris. Approved.

3 Chairman’s Report As last year I must start off this report by passing on the congratulations of all the clubs members to Rob Foster and the 1st XI for achieving 3rd position in the BDPCL after what was a very difficult season for all concerned. Rob managed a vastly changed team structure from last year and what he and the team achieved was way beyond our anticipation prior to the season commencing.

The 2016 cricket reports off the team Captains & Junior Co-ordinator will detail their season’s achievements. This will be followed by announcing the clubs intentions on the playing side for our 3rd & 4th XI’s in 2017.

The Past 12 Months at the Club. Many cricketing members may believe the clubhouse, following the AGM, goes into hibernation during the winter periods but this is far from the reality. Our facilities are now heavily utilised for twelve months of the year. In addition to our very successful Table Tennis section the clubhouse and grounds are used for numerous outside functions ranging from: Christenings, Wedding receptions, Anniversaries, Funeral wakes, Slimming clubs, Kiddiewinks, Band practice Training days, Charity functions, BBQ’s. You name it…..we do, or can do it.

It must be stated here that all the hiring of the clubs facilities and our fundraising is ultimately for the benefit of club members whether they be players or social members. Those members who were present at the start of the 2016 summer witnessed the commencement of our new ladies Rounder’s section playing in the local league. This sport was an eye opener for many including me who read a part of the rules dealing with violence on the field of play. Luckily this rule, I believe, was not required last season. I am pleased to say the “genteel” sport of rounder’s is set to continue at the club in 2017 and I am sure Emma Anders will be pleased for any additional ladies who may wish to participate. The Committee took the opportunity over the past year to undertake the following tasks around the ground and clubhouse:

Ref Minutes • Replacement of the white timber fence fronting the pavilion. This has yet to be completed and painted. • Provision of fencing within the car park to maximise the spaces available and therefore the income generated from its use. Continuous maintenance of the car park has also been undertaken. • Replacement of 5 windows to the rear of the garage and front of the changing rooms combined with two smart new doors for the changing rooms. • Provision of an alarm system on the garage. This was deemed necessary due to the numerous machinery thefts from cricket clubs around the county. • Provision of a new pedestrian path from the car park to the playing field side of the pavilion. A much appreciated addition following the very wet weather early in the year. • Waterproofing and draught proofing the scorebox to increase the comfort of those who spend many an hour in there.

On the cricketing front our club hosted: • The County Club for a one day KO game. • The Salop Leisure 20/20 knock-out, again played over three separate Friday evenings, but for the 1st time in many years we did not get our hands on the winning trophy. • Three County Over 50 and 60’s games, one of which was a match against Fingletoads a team from New Zealand. • And a club XI played a touring team from Lancashire.

On Monday nights during the season it was a pleasing to witness around 80 youngsters receiving 1st class coaching from Adam Shantry and his team, ably supported by club volunteers and all under the overall management of Peter Andrews. It was a memorable site to see all the juniors out on the field all wearing identical coloured shirts donated to them by Salop Leisure for their training nights. The one size shirts were very much appreciated by all the youngsters, despite the shirts almost touching the ground with some of our smallest youngsters, but they still insisted on wearing them. For the second year the club hosted three junior training camps which again were deemed a success as they resulted in new junior members, some of whom played in the clubs senior 4th XI for the first time. And finally on the cricketing front I am delighted to announce, if you are unaware, one of our players has finally reached international status as John Foster our President has been selected to Captain an England Over 60’s side to tour Australia before Christmas. I understand this includes three games against an Australian XI.

2016 Fund Raising & Socials Prior to the season commencing club members were invited to select and manage a club Fantasy Team. Despite some initial grumblings by some players on their personal valuations around 40 teams were entered raising approximately £300 for the club.

Thanks to a further donation of a bat off Woodstock we again held a raffle through the summer.

The club social this year was on the last day of the season to ensure as many players and social members could celebrate, or drown their sorrows, on their achievements during the season. Thanks again go to Alan and Becky for the preparation of the curry’s available during the evening.

All the annual club awards were presented or announced during that evening and the four main awards were: • Players Player………..Ed Griggs • Club Person………..…Alan Hughes • 2016 Young Player ….Henry Blofield • Chairman’s Award…...”Spot” Davies

Ref Minutes 2017 and beyond The challenge for the club membership and the aim of the new Committee is to ensure we continue to provide 1st class facilities and opportunities for cricketers of all standards and development whatever their age and ability. The Committee would therefore like all members to inform them what they believe the club should be providing to achieve this aim.

Finally I will like to take this opportunity to thank all those who through their efforts have ensured this club continues to provide cricket in Shrewsbury to the highest standard possible as without their support this would not be achievable. My special thanks extend: • To our numerous Sponsors especially Salop Leisure, GKN, Greenhous and Orbit. • To all our club volunteers • To Bill and “Spot” Davies for providing our playing facilities during what was a very difficult year due to the weather and the new surface on the square. • To Alan Hughes and his team for continuing to ensure members & visitors do not go thirsty in addition to attracting functions at the club thereby increasing our bank balance which goes a long way in funding our future projects. • To Adam Shantry and his cohorts for the cricket coaching they have provided for our junior cricketers during 2016. • To the clubs Committee Members, Team Captains and Junior Managers who have strived to ensure the clubs aims are met. • And finally to Pat & Shelley Edwards who, after providing thousands of cups of teas and match day nutrition, have retired from this task. Their catering was appreciated far and wide and will be sorely missed by many, especially their cream & strawberry scones. On the clubs and players behalf I take this opportunity to present you with these flowers as a mark of appreciation for all your past achievements.

4 Cricket Reports

st 4.1 1 XI (Rob Foster): Following on from the success of the 2015 season was always going to be a tough ask with the loss of so many key first xl players some to relocation for work and others to the financial offerings of other local clubs the 2016 season for the first xl was always going to be a tough season but one which I believe can largely be viewed as a success with the team finishing 3rd in the league. A much changed side found the early season rather tough with poor weather and several new players trying to establish themselves early season form didn't look to promising, thankfully a much better second half of the season led to an eventual third place finish and a much better feel heading into the coming season. Disappointingly our cup season performances were very poor. Some key highlights from the season; Oli Westbury who has earned his first professional contract with Worcester County Cricket Club on the back of some outstanding performances for England U19s and good league form for the club, I feel the club are very lucky to have a player of Oli's quality at the club, The return from long term injury of Dillan Pennington for the last few league games of the season he was able to show what a fine talent he is scoring a maiden first xl hundred at only 17 and also bowling some promising spells of quick bowling, a special young talent along with the development of Lewis Evans who played in the first at only 14 years old, I feel we have some outstanding young players which we can build a side around for the coming years. Finally the time has come for me to stand down after four years in my role as first team captain, A few thankyous firstly to Claire Green for all her hard work scoring, also Bill and Spot Davies for their hard work on the ground, Jon Anders, Ed Griggs and Tom Crouch who often felt the full force of first xl issues for and finally the committee for their support over the years.

Ref Minutes 2nd XI (Jon Anders): It is hard to write a report and be positive in a season that brought relegation to such a promising side at the start of the year. I am sure my senior players will support me in saying that the oppositions were not the strongest we have come across. Consistently week after week poor availability from our playing staff resulted in week after week different sides being put out. On at least 6 occasions this year we played with 10 players or less, and some of those players were brought in from the 4ths or 3rds at short notice. And to add all this performance on the pitch at times was shocking. Training this year has been poor. How some of our younger players think they can improve if they don’t even train during the week is beyond me. I feel embarrassed handing over the reins to Tom Somerville. We must support Tom and work in the off season to recruit at all levels at the club so as he is not left each week with a different side and only 10 players to choose from. Travelling in 2017 will be a lot easier playing at least 5 or 6 Shropshire clubs, will this make a difference I’m not sure. Playing performances as I have said overall were not up to standard. But I must take this opportunity to mention some players. Great rivalry between Dan Manders and Tom Somerville did give us the opportunity to set some very competitive scores but our bowling on these occasions let us down. Dan scoring 450 and Tom 377 runs were the standard contributors. In the bowling department Lewis Evans and Brad Thornton were the stand out contributors here. All-rounder for the season will go to Dan Manders, best bowling 6-32. I hope that that all players at all levels will give good advanced availability to the captains for the 2017 season so as we can identify early problem weekends. We cannot have players dropping out during the week. I’m afraid to me this is totally unacceptable behaviour. I would also like to mention here the collection of tea monies. You will not believe how many times players ask me how much teas are. The process must be review for the coming season. I would like to thank the following people who over the last few seasons have supported the 2nd team. Dave Somerville and Rob Jones for their umpiring support, and Pat and Lesley for their wonderful teas. Bill Davies and William Davies for ground and Support in getting games on while the weather at times was not at is best.

3rd XI (Ed Griggs): 2016 saw the 3rd XI look much changed from previous years, the loss of senior players (Dave Williams / Nick Jones didn’t play a game between them) plus the progression of talented younger players such as Lewis Evans to higher levels, saw the 3rd impacted heavily by the loss of 1st XI players the previous winter. The previous strength in depth left the squad threadbare that despite on its day could beat anyone in SCCL Division 2, rarely managed to field that playing contingent.

Early season was extremely tough that saw the 3s go until July winless. 6 defeats coupled with 3 draws and a couple of abandonments meant at the half way stage of the season the 3s were rooted to the bottom of the league. Very few positives had come from the 1st half of the season bar U15 Dom Stone’s unbeaten 53* carrying his bat in the abandonment away at Prees on a tricky deck and the bowling of Rich Scragg who at this point was then called up to play 2nd XI cricket on the back of miserly economy rates and reports that he was getting his skip free at the other end!

The 2nd half of the season turned on 1 pivotal game at Cae Glas (who turned out to finish bottom) in a vital 1 win. Having held Glas to an average 115-8 in 45 overs, confidence was high, but Salop crashed to 60 or so for 8 a reoccurring theme of the summer. Peter Evans standing in as an occasional player & young Matt Wear (U16) putting on nearly 50 to get us within touch and then James Davis (another U15) managing to add another 8 runs unbroken to clinch the win. This win kick started the season and 2 wins and a cancelation followed as Salop climbed the table. Some dark moments still came including being demolished by 3:30 by Prees at SCAT, but in general the cricket played was excellent. Finishing the season in midtable and the 2nd half of the season with a record of 5wins 1draw 3defeats (all versus the top 3) plus the rain affected draws was a superb effort.

Steve Froggatt top scoring with 259 runs @ 22 (a sign of a tough year with the bat – only 7x50s made all year and most no more than 50odd) Captain Ed Griggs with 36 SCCL wickets @ 14s, including 8-28 away at Iscoyd &Fenns Bank

Ref Minutes

T20: The T20 story was very different…a tournament Salop should have at least made the final after posting a significant semi-final total. Ultimately the form found in the shorter format kick started the league campaign, but after progressing past Acton Reynald, Whittington & last year’s winners Wheaton Aston a semi-final at London Rd beckoned vs Div3 outfit Harcourt. Posting 141-6 (Griggs 54, C Foulkes 30) looked a really good total, and despite high quality spells from Scragg 4 overs for just 16 & Sharpe 4 overs for just 14, Salop folded to a class exhibition of by Rick Jarrett who made 56 in no more than 30 balls. It was a disappointing end to an ultimately winnable competition, and the side were deflated, virtually dragged off the field. However the chance to play 3 fixtures at London Rd and a big Semi- Final gave some youngsters the taste and the side kicked on from then. As a captain I was very proud of the squad, and we look forward to this competition going forward.

4th XI (Tom Crouch): After a slow start to the season when it proved difficult to recruit players and the weather was often against us we had a very enjoyable middle phase, winning three games in a row starting with Newtown who were top of our division unbeaten to that date. Our team was a mixture of both youth and experience and we were fortunate in recruiting some players from Adams Summer Camps namely Moya Wodoka & Jamie Walsh. Tom Atkins was on form with the ball, winning our bowling award and Sam Davies proved good with a bat. Tony Jenkins made 61 on one occasion. Our fielding could be proved good at times with Dan Perkins sharp in the field. We were grateful to the commitment shown by Tim & Ted Stone and the experience of Richard C and Paul Gerrard in addition to the coaching style of Steve Biggins. Promising youngsters Tom Andrews & Joe Fleet joined us at the end of the season and we hope they will enjoy playing alongside adults more frequently next season. We are looking forward to the challenge & enjoyment of playing on some top class pitches next season. The team loved the cricket teas by the way.

Juniors (Peter Andrews): During 2016 Shrewsbury CC Entered Junior Teams in the following competitions: Team Competition Competition Manager Coach U10 None U11B None ESCB U13A U11A Cup KO Dan Rob League U13B SCCL U13 Marc None ESCB U13A U13A Cup KO Peter None League U15 ESCB U15 Cup KO Jon Jon

The club held no competitions for juniors U10 or softball cricket during 2016 for the younger members and the idea of KinderCricket that had been discussed in late 2015/early 2016 did not occur as lack of time prevented sufficient planning and organising. Dan enjoyed some success with the U11A team and was able to field a reliable squad of second year players. Unfortunately, due to a lack of parental help we could not put out a second U11 side, much to the disappointment of both players and parents. Due to poor weather Marc had a very slow start to the season in the SCCL with the U13B team but got underway by the end of May and offered match play to a good number of the U13 players who had signed up for hard ball cricket. The U13A’s competing in the ESCB League struggled to get a full team of our most competitive players together at any one game and although there were some notable wins against Bridgnorth and Shifnal the final results for this team did not reflect the true potential of a team full of talent.

Ref Minutes The U15’s suffered from a lack of players and struggled all season to get a full team together with a squad made up of a mix of U11, U13 and the few U15’s. This lack of U15 players combined with cancellations due to weather and other teams unable to field a full squad contributed to a less than memorable season for our U15’s. This is a situation that needs to be addressed before next season given the well reported news from senior team managers that they have struggled to put full teams together all season. This is obviously an inevitability if we as a club do not nurture and spend time (and money) developing these players at this critical time in their life when there are so many other distractions. Whilst overviewing the season I should report that I received several complaints from parents, mainly in the U11 age group, who were very disappointed their boys could not get match play. Being only able to one team in this age group the club let a number of players down who were expecting to play and this may have repercussions next season in membership. I feel we have a responsibility as a club to provide matches for players who sign up for hard ball cricket training and we need to start working hard now to recruit parents to assist in making this happen. If we are unable to recruit, then we can do no more unless club members step up to run teams or we are able to run in club competitions to give the junior members the games they require. Either way it is very apparent the club does need more help from parents and members. The summer training was again a very popular and much praised programme with over 80 juniors attending the ten week programme between the ages of 6 and 13. The only complaints I received was from parents who felt their boys/girls were training in the wrong group and secondly I had a significant number of parents who indicated their disappointment the programme finished so soon in July. There was still a number of problems experienced with the on-line registration system and the club needs to do some work to smooth this process as we seem to have a half paper and half paperless procedure which confuses old members and new members and makes it quite difficult to establish who should and who should not be on site and eligible for training and although this year has been an improvement on last year which was better that the previous year it is still not an easy process to use or monitor. U15 players trained with our senior players on a Friday but the coaching they received was inadequate and fell short of what these players deserved for their membership fee. This is something we need to address next season.

Vision for 2017 It would do any harm to set out a wish list for next season and it would be hoped that working with other club members we can achieve some, if not all these goals. · KinderCricket to be looked at once again and club representatives attended a presentation and course at Ellesmere College on Friday, October 7th to gain a flavour of what is involved. Dates, venues, coaches and marketing all required. · The club to run a limited series of soft ball cricket matches. These can be simple club games or a series of matches organised between local clubs. Managers, dates, other club contacts required for U9. · An U10 team competing in the ESCB League which is essentially pairs cricket played with a hard ball. Parental help required here. Also the County KO cup competition for this age group should be played. · An U11A team competing in the ESCB A League and County Cup KO. · An U13B team competing in the SCCL. · An U13A team competing in the ESCB League and County Cup KO. · An U15 team competing in either the SCCL or the ESCB and County Cup. The U15 squad would consist of the U15’s, all of whom will be first year U15’s (U14’s in reality) who would be joined by second year U13 players. These U13 players would play U15’s cricket as their priority. I would also suggest the coaching for this U15 squad is not with other juniors but run with the seniors as a separate U15 squad would be coached as a group with an allocated coach (Tyler/Overseas Player). I have heard on many occasions about the demise of this age group and equally how important this age group is for the continued development and success of the senior teams. However, it does seem to me there is a bit of disconnect between club support and players as soon as they outgrow the U13 age group. We need to consider how the club can nurture and retain this age group of players at a time when they have a lot of alternative distractions. Of course U15 players should be encouraged to play as much as possible with our 4th X1, and the change to Sunday fixtures for next season should prove more popular for them to do so.

Ref Minutes

The Junior Team & Competition Schedule for 2017 could look like this:

Team Competition Competition Competition Manager Coach Softball U9 TBC Friendly U10 ESCB Cup KO TBC U11B None ESCB U13A U11A Cup KO TBC TBC League SCCL U13 U13B or ESCB TBC TBC U13B ESCB U13A U13A Cup KO Dan TBC League ESCB or Overseas U15 Cup KO 4th XI Jane SCCL U15 Player

It is apparent there are a lot of TBC positions here and we need to start working on this before Christmas. I believe we need an information sheet explaining what is involved in managing a team and run a few evening sessions at the club for parents who are interested in helping. The SCB and ACO run a number of suitable courses that help parents to get involved in running, managing and coaching junior teams.

We lose Adam Shantry from next season’s junior training but recent meetings with Tyler have been very positive and Tyler has agreed to run the programme and has some new ideas to bring to the sessions that will build on the work already done by Adam. Tyler is also keen to promote several winter sessions and regular weekend sessions at the club nets on a Saturday or Sunday morning for players. Details for this need to be finalised but I feel would be of great benefit to players and the club.

As for next season’s summer training I have done a little research on the idea of changing training to a Friday night which did prove popular two years ago with parents who were much more inclined to spend more time at the club to watch training and enjoy the bar. There is also the option of continuing to run softball training with Embrace on a Monday and move senior training/U15’s to a Thursday. Alternatively staggering start times for softball and hardball training. Whatever we do we should have our programme set out and ready to go well before March next year.

I also strongly believe we should introduce extended training programmes to the basic ten week schedule. For instance: P1 would be ten weeks between April 24th and July 10th. P2 would be an additional four weeks from July 17th to August 7th, and finally P3 would be another two weeks on August 14th and August 21st. These can be additional products to be purchased on line with discounts for signing up to more than one programme.

Additional items that we should consider: 1. Pre-setting some dates for festivals to include three other local clubs for U11 and U13 players. 2. These dates could also include club social events with BBQ. 3. We could encourage U15 players to get involved in organising and umpiring these matches. 4. We might consider the installation of an all-weather surface to give junior players more chance of getting games going when the weather is less kind. 5. Consider the great idea raised at a recent C.M. regarding an all-weather outdoor table tennis table. 6. Outdoor fitness installations and a “trim trail” around the perimeter of the ground (there must be grants for this stuff!). Get people walking around watching cricket and getting fit.

Ref Minutes The important issue for the club is to engage people in the sport, retain them at the club and provide a programme of continuous development with a clear structure from the junior training programmes to playing senior cricket in our 1st and 2nd teams.

4.2 The Future (Ed Griggs): Some of you may be unaware, but the club has finally moved away from SCAT for 3rd & 4th XI cricket. The 3rd XI will now share the Unison ground with Wroxeter Grove 3rd XI, and the 4th XI will play on Sundays @ London Rd. The Committee and senior players felt this move gave our young players a vastly improved standard of facility and would encourage veteran players to not hang up the boots so fast. Unison offers full covers, screens, and all the modern equipment (rollers etc.) as well as proper changing facilities and club house. The club looks forward to playing there in the 2017 season.

With all that in mind, the club is having active conversations about the future home of 3rd & 4th XI cricket with the ultimate aim of finding a purpose built SCC controlled ground.

5 Treasurers Report: Finance Spreadsheets attached 5.1 The Treasurers 2015 Income & Expenditure accounts were Audited by Peter Wilkinson following last year’s AGM and were deemed correct. The Treasurers 2016 Income & Expenditure accounts have been Audited by Peter Wilkinson and are deemed correct.

5.2 Year to 30th September 2016: The £12,011 surplus recorded this year is the second highest on record and is £9,071 better than last year. The increase is due to higher income of £7,997 and lower expenditure of £1,074. On the income side we enjoyed increases in member’s subscriptions, net match fees, net bar profit and room hire; together with substantial increase (£5,962) in car parking. Sponsorship, income from Camps and events were all lower than last year. The receipt of £1,250 accreditation from the Birmingham Premier League meant that Other Income items were up on last year. This payment may be a one off and is not expected in the coming years. Many items of expenditure are similar this year to those of 2015. Spending on maintenance of the pavilion and premises this year includes further car park improvements of £2,998 and replacing the windows in the garage and changing rooms £2,274. The picket fence was also replaced at a cost of £765. Kit and Clothing costs includes initial spending on rounder’s gear £429, but this was mostly offset by a specific Sponsorship.

The Balance Sheet shows a healthy financial position going forward, with bank balances at £37,896. Even adjusting for net payables and net receipts in advance at the end of September still leaves us with £29,822 of working cash.

5.3 Match Fees: Collection is an increasing problem for the Captains and the new Committee must ensure the process causes no problems. It is recognised we (the public) are becoming a cashless society and this is part of the problem. In future the club must have a written record on a standard sheet when it is passed to the Treasurer.

5.4 Approval of finance sheets proposed by Claire Green and seconded by Ed Griggs. Approved.

6 Appointment of Auditor Attendees recommend Peter Wilkinson remains the club Auditor.

Ref Minutes 7 Proposed Constitution Amendments 7.1 It was proposed by Mike Cliffe and seconded by Ed Foster to accept the Committees proposals to alter Paras 3.6 & 7.8 within the Clubs Constitution. It was proposed by Rob Foster and seconded by Tom Crouch to accept the Committees proposals to alter Para10 within the Clubs Constitution. Approved. The alterations will be as written within the Agenda.

7.2 The Chairman will have the clubs Constitution altered to reflect the accepted changes. The revised Constitution and Minutes of this meeting will be uploaded onto the clubs web-site by the end of November.

8 Membership Subscriptions for 2016 8.1 Brian Edwards proposed and Peter Andrews seconded the acceptance of the Committees proposal to maintain the 2017 subscriptions at the same level as 2016. Approved.

8.2 Those present agreed the new membership category of Rounder’s Player shall pay an annual subscription of £30 and £25 for early payment. A Rounder’s Junior Player shall pay £15 annual subscription and £10 for early payment.

9 Election of Committee Officers & Members 9.1 Those below were elected as Officers/Members within the Committee structure:

Officers Role (Clause 4.1 of the Constitution) 1 Secretary Rob Foster

2 Treasurer Bryan Hinton

3 Cricket Manager/Dev. Officer Ed Foster

4 1st XI Cricket Captain Ben Stebbings

nd 5 2 XI Cricket Captain Tom Somerville 6 3rd XI Cricket Captain Ed Griggs

9 Alan Hughes

10 William “Spot” Davies

9.2 All present agreed John Foster continues as Club President.

9.3 Proposal by Ed Foster and seconded by Ed Griggs that Claire Green is appointed as the Committee Chairperson. Approved

Ref Minutes 10 AOB 10.1 Cricket Square Renovation: Further work carried out at end of season by Shrewsbury School, “Welder” & “Spot”. More grass seed and loam added. Rapid growth in the grass and it looks promising for next year.

10.2 Car parking: Local residents informed those present that a councillor is attempting to have additional parking provided at the Business Park to alleviate the parking problems in the housing estate neighbouring the club. This may reduce the demand for the clubs car park it was stated. Richard Chapman informed those present that he met with Alaska, the developers, only yesterday and he was informed they have no intention of providing a car park for many various reasons. Planning regulations are strict regarding the number of allocated spaces for each building.

10.3 Player recruitment: All clubs are having same problem in recruiting and retaining players. No local schools now provide cricket. Government, ECB/SCB are providing additional funding to target recruitment of juniors from schools. This will be achieved by local clubs approaching schools direct and this club cannot sit back and let others take the lead. We should ask “Why should they go elsewhere rather than here considering we have this ground, nets and clubhouse”. Ed Griggs informed the meeting he was on the Shropshire League working group that is looking at recruitment in general and assured those present that a lot is happening, or will happen, regarding this problem. 10.4
