That is why you will see in this proposal that I have partnered with several community organizations to make sure that the Championships held in Asheville is the best event possible. I am proud to submit this proposal to host the 2012 National Collegiate Table Tennis Championships in Asheville on behalf of the Asheville Buncombe Regional Sports Commission, the Asheville Convention & Visitors Bureau, and the University of North Carolina at Asheville. Asheville is a unique community that welcomes over two million visitors annually and is consistently listed as one of the country’s best places to live, work, and visit. As one of America’s most welcoming cities, Asheville is prepared to offer your student athletes a world class experience. It is our hope that every athlete and fan leaves Asheville knowing they had a remarkable weekend full of memories they will cherish for years to come. In addition to a site visit, I would be happy to organize an online meeting to share more information with you regarding Asheville Sincerely, Ben VanCamp Senior Advisor Asheville Buncombe Regional Sports Commission [email protected] 828.713.5825 To attract sports events and related meetings to our community to enhance the health, wellness and quality of life for area residents and sports enthusiasts by promoting our region as a recognized sporting destination. It is large enough to provide student-athletes and fans a big-time championship experience, yet small enough to ensure that the tournament will be celebrated in the local community. This match will bring your championship significant media publicity, the warmest of welcomes, high ticket sales, and adoration from local businesses and organizations. Asheville has been recognized for its splendors by dozens of magazines, websites and publications in recent years. Accolades range from the designation by Frommer’s as one of a dozen top travel destinations in the world to recognition for the Asheville area arts community, outdoor adventures, cuisine, and much more. These are just a few of the reasons why Asheville will draw visitors and fans to your tournament. Sherman’s Travel: The online travel resource, Sherman’s Travel, named the Blue Ridge Parkway in their list of “Top 10 Value Destinations for 2010.” (December 2009) RateBeer.com: This craft beer aficionado Web site named several Asheville area restaurants, breweries and craft beer stores in their annual RateBeer Best 2010. (January 2010) National Geographic Traveler: Asheville received honors in the magazine’s Fifth Annual Places Rated Survey. Asheville ranked in the top 50 globally and top 10 nationally. The city placed first among North Carolina destinations. (October 2008) “Asheville was an extremely popular choice as a site for our annual rally, as a matter of fact, attendance in Asheville was the highest in the history of our organization.” 1 -Debbi Harbour, BMW Riders Association AshevilleBuncombe REGIONAL SPORTS COMMISSION AshevilleBuncombe REGIONAL SPORTS COMMISSION AshevilleBuncombe REGIONAL SPORTS COMMISSION Hosts Asheville Buncombe Regional Sports Commission AshevilleSports.org Formed in the fall of 2010, the Asheville Buncombe AshevilleBuncombeÊ Regional Sports Commission will identify and REGIONALÊSPORTSÊ attract sports events and related meetings to COMMISSION enhance the health, wellness and quality of life for area residents and sports enthusiasts and will generate a positive economic impact by promoting our region as a recognized sporting destination. The Department of Athletics seeks to sponsor a competitive, broad-based, fiscally-sound and ethically responsible NCAA Division I athletics program. Our expectation is that the combination of a strong, liberal arts education combined with multi-dimensional athletics experiences will foster long-term community and professional accomplishments by our student-athletes after they graduate. Aaron Sanders, Kimmel Arena Facility Coordinator 828.251.6934, [email protected] AmericanStyle: For the second year, Asheville held the number two spot in the small cities category (population under 100,000) in the annual 2 “Top 25 Arts Destinations” reader’s poll. (April 2009) Kimmel Arena: The Perfect Venue Located in the heart of the University of North Carolina at Asheville’s campus, between the Justice Center and the Reuter Center is the 138,000 square foot North Carolina Center for Health & Wellness, which houses the brand new Kimmel Arena. The Kimmel Arena is located just 2.4 miles north west of the Downtown Asheville. This new, 3,200 seat venue on the campus of UNC-Asheville is the proposed venue. The new project is currently underway and is projected to open April 2011, which is one year before the tournament. Architects for the project are Bowers Ellis & Watson of Asheville, and HOK, an international firm that specializes in public assembly architecture. The Kimmel Arena is being constructed and operated in an environmentally sustainable manner and will feature the latest video production technology, health-conscious dining, strength training rooms, and ample meeting areas. 3 Kimmel Arena: The Perfect Venue Lights / Sounds Lighting in the facility is direct overhead with a system which allows these lights to be dimmed using shades. The arena lighting is designed to meet NCAA / ESPN standards. There are seven windows near arena floor that have little or no impact on the competition space. The arena features a brand new, state of the art, public address system capable of handling all your events needs. Ceiling Height The two catwalks above the floor are the lowest points on the ceiling. They are 51 feet, 6.5 inches above the floor. Restroom / Locker Room The arena is designed to host events with over 3,500 attendees, the six ADA accessible restrooms on the facility concourse will provide more than adequate facilities for the record breaking attendance. The arena features eight locker rooms for competitors with an additional two smaller locker rooms for VIPs, staff, or referees. Seating The Kimmel Arena has several seating configurations. To maximize competition space no floor seating will be utilized for most of the competition. This configuration provides 3,200 seats in the Arena, consisting of 2,400 fixed chair back seats, 440 bleacher seats, and the remainder are telescoping chair back seats. During competition matches additional floor seating can be added if preferred. Parking / Access The arena has an attached parking garage and several locations for coach bus parking. The parking garage can be used as a fee lot with parking policies negotiable. Kimmel Arena has a main entrance with six doors and a VIP entrance with four additional doors. Meeting Facilities There are seven large meeting rooms on the concourse level that can be utilized as hospitality rooms or lounges for the tournament. There is a large hospitality room with a deck that has a view of the Arena floor on the concourse. Copier, internet, and janitorial services are all available during the event. Concessions There are two large concession stands on the concourse, with the possibility of kiosks being added to increase concession capability. Downtown
