Bromley Cemetery Tour Compiled by Richard L. N. Greenaway June 2007 Block 1A Row C No. 33 Hurd Born at Hinton, England, Frank James Hurd emigrated with his parents. He worked as a contractor and, in 1896, in Wellington, married Lizzie Coker. The bride, 70, claimed to be 51 while the groom, 40, gave his age as 47. Lizzie had emigrated on the Regina in 1859 with her cousin, James Gapes (later Mayor of Christchurch) and his family and had already been twice-wed. Indeed, the property she had inherited from her first husband, George Allen, had enabled her second spouse, John Etherden Coker, to build the Manchester Street hotel which bears his name. Lizzie and Frank were able to make trips to England and to Canada where there dwelt Lizzie’s brother, once a member of the Horse Guards. Lizzie died in 1910 and, two years later, Hurd married again. He and his wife lived at 630 Barbadoes Street. Hurd was a big man who, in old age he had a white moustache, cap and walking stick. He died, at 85, on 1 April 1942. Provisions of Lizzie’s will meant that a sum of money now came to the descendants of James Gapes. They were now so numerous that the women of the tribe could spend their inheritance on a new hat and have nothing left over. DISTRICT PLAN – LISTED HERITAGE PLACE HERITAGE ASSESSMENT – STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE FORMER CANTERBURY COLLEGE, 2 WORCESTER STREET, 25 HEREFORD STREET, 39 HEREFORD STREET, 30 WORCESTER STREET, 40 WORCESTER STREET, CHRISTCHURCH Canterbury College (from 1958, Canterbury University), founded in 1873, was New Zealand’s second university after Otago. From 1876 a College campus was developed on the city block circumscribed by Worcester, Hereford and Montreal Streets and Rolleston Avenue. By the mid twentieth century this had blossomed into a remarkably architecturally homogenous Gothic Revival complex. By the mid-1950s the university’s increasing roll required a move to a larger campus and between 1957 and 1974 the University re-located to the Ilam campus. In 1976 the University’s former city site was transferred to the Arts Centre of Christchurch Trust Board to be used for a variety of arts-related activities. The first buildings at Canterbury College were designed by prominent 19th century Canterbury architect Benjamin Mountfort, who envisaged a Gothic Revival campus on the Oxbridge model. These included the Clock Tower Block (1877/1879), College Hall (1882), Classics Building (1888), Mechanical Engineering Building (1891) and Biology – Observatory Block (1896 and later). These buildings are closely associated with the early days of Canterbury College, founding professors such as David Macmillan Brown and Alexander Bickerton, and early students such as Ernest Rutherford and Apirana Ngata. The Canterbury College Board was also responsible for establishing the first public secondary schools in the province. These institutions were initially co-located with the College on the city site. Christchurch Girls High School (1877 and later) proved so popular that it had to relocate within a few years to Cranmer Square. -

IAN LAUDER 1914 - 2008 Ian Lauder was born on 6 April 1914 in Christchurch, New Zealand. After secondary education at Christchurch Boy's High School during 1928-32, he studied at Canterbury University College (Christchurch), University of New Zealand (now the University of Canterbury, Christchurch). In his second year (1934) he was awarded the Haydon Prize in Chemistry, and in 1935 he graduated B.Sc. with the award of both the Sir George Grey Scholarship in Chemistry, and the Senior Scholarship in Chemistry. In 1936 he graduated M.Sc. with 1st. class Honours in Organic Chemistry, and the award of the Charles Cook Warwick-House Memorial Fellowship in Chemistry that enabled him to continue research at Canterbury University College during 1937, working under Dr. H.N. Parton on the oxidation-reduction potential of 2,6-dichlorophenol indophenol. The award of an 1851 Exhibition Science Research Scholarship and a Free Passage (England - New Zealand return) in 1937 took him to the University of Manchester where he worked on oxygen-18 exchange reactions between water and oxygen-containing organic compounds under the supervision of Professor M. Polanyi and Mr. J.B.M. Herbert. He was awarded the degree of Ph.D. from the University of Manchester in July 1939, and in that same year he was awarded a Senior Fellowship by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR, United Kingdom). -

Palma Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, PO Box 467, Wellington, New Zealand ([email protected]) With great sadness, I received the news of the death of my colleague, close friend and mentor, Professor R.L.C. Pilgrim, affectionately known as Bob. Despite his deteriorating physical health, Bob continued to do research on his beloved fleas until the last minute of his life. He died suddenly at home of a heart attack, after spending the evening working on his monograph of the flea larvae of the world. Although Bob will not see the results of his research in print, his friend and colleague Terry Galloway will complete the manuscript for publication. I met Bob over 37 years ago, a few weeks after I arrived in New Zealand with my wife and son as political refugees from Chile, where democracy had been crushed and many people killed by the military. Little did I realise then that meeting Bob would mark an important turning point in my life as a person and as a scientist. I feel privileged and honoured to have known Bob and his family over all these years and remember him as a truly exceptional man. Bob was a holistic scientist, a natural historian of the old school, who had extensive knowledge of biology in its broad- est meaning.
