Ms Coll\Parsons, E. Parsons, Elsie Clews, 1875-1941. Field notebooks, 1883-1921. 1.5 linear ft. (34 items (33 v.) in 3 boxes) Biography: Anthropologist and sociologist (Barnard college AB; 1896; Columbia University AM: 1897; and Columbia University Ph.D.: 1899). She was married in 1900 to Herbert Parsons, M.C. (1869-1925), a political figure in New York City. Summary: Field notebooks detailing the customs and ceremonies of the Hopi Indians, collected by Parsons, 1874-1941. Thirty of these volumes were the notebooks of Alexander M. Stephen (d. 1894), a U.S. Army officer who started observing Hopi life, ca. 1882. Although chiefly concerned with the Hopis, there are some notes on Hopi-Navajo relations and a few references to the Tewa and Hokya Indians. Stephen's penciled notes and drawings were edited by Dr. Parsons as the Hopi Journal of Alexander M. Stephen (New York, Columbia University Press, 1936). Volumes 1-30 (by Alexander M. Stephen) are on microfilm. Also, three unpublished notebooks of observations made by Jeremiah Sullivan who also lived among the Hopis in the 1880s. A letter from anthropologist Alfred L. Kroeber to Dr. Parsons explains the provenance of one of Sullivan's notebooks. (These last three notebooks have also been attributed to A.M. Stephen by Alex Patterson, Feb. 1994. See his note added to the Contents list.) Most of the notebooks have been published. Finding aids: Contents list, 3p. Restrictions on use: Restricted to permission of the Librarian for Rare Books and Manuscripts, due to the extremely fragile condition of the notebooks. Readers must use microfilm of materials specified above. Permission to publish materials must be obtained in writing from the Librarian for Rare Books & Manuscripts. MICROFILM interlibrary loan of vols. 26-30 of the E. C. Parsons Papers (i.e., the notebooks of A. M. Stephen and Jeremiah Sullivan). Notebook "I" "Index?" may be assigned the date of 1884. The "index" is to "Pottery of Tusayan: Catalogue of the Keam Collection" by A. M. Stephen. The original manuscript appears to be lost. A typescript, prepared ca. 1885/86, is located in the National Anthropological Archives. The typescript begins with the Catalogue proper, omitting the Introductory, and lacks the final sections on Transitional and Modern Wares. Two other, apparently identical, typescripts based on the original manuscript but lacking illustrations preserved at the NAA are located in the Peabody Museum Library, Harvard University and at the Newberry Library in Chicago. Of the other four notebooks, three have internal dates (1893) and the fourth reflects Stephen's interests from that same time period and may be dated 1893 as well. Patterson is incorrect in attributing the final three volumes, 31-33, to A. M. Stephen. The author is Jeremiah Sullivan who lived in the Hopi First Mesa village of Sichomovi from 1881-1888. The Sullivan Journals-Notebooks 31, 32, and 33- are highly similar to the drawing and handwriting styles of the AMS Notebooks. On the flypage of Notebook Number 32 you will find that a pencil drawing of a Si-pa-pu has been inked and designated Fig. 6 (this is how E.C. Parsons prepared AMS' pencil drawings for publication). It matches Fig. 6 on page 10 of the Hopi Journal of Alexander M. Stephen. Notebook 31, with "J. Sullivan, Compiler" on its front, has a date of 1883 near the beginning, crude ethnographic comments, and many drawings in color with children's (?) crayons. I believe these are AMS' earliest writing and drawing efforts. Only two drawings marked "Sullivan Collection" with "J S 12 / 83" on the drawings are Sullivan's, in my opinion. Your Notebook Number 7 contains a "Memo from Catalogue" (pp. 40 thru 36a) which outlines the highlights of a manuscript by Stephen dated December 29, 1890 entitled Pottery of Tusayan-Catalogue of the Keam Collection (unpublished manuscript, no. 3282, Archaeology-Bureau of American Ethnology-Smithsonian Institution) and details seven questions which appear to require further research. Your Notebook Number 27 appears to be the beginnings of an Index to an early version of Pottery of Tusayan. My version of Pottery of Tusayan will appear this spring under the title Hopi Pottery Symbols from Johnson Books, Boulder, CO..
