Welcome to the Medicine Stories podcast, where we are remembering what it is to be human upon the earth. This is Episode 39, and I am Amber Magnolia Hill. And today we are talking again to Kami McBride, who was my guest on Episode 20, and you all LOVED her just as much as I love her. It’s really exciting having her back. Kami’s book, The Herbal Kitchen, is having its tenth anniversary right now and is being reissued in a brand new format with more recipes, more photos, and so I asked her to come back and talk to me about Kitchen Herbalism. I really love Kami’s focus and what she taught me in my year-long apprenticeship with her in 2007 is on home herbalism. I feel like we have a tendency to really overcomplicate herbalism for people who are new. Just feeling called to learn more about working with plants, it can seem so overwhelming, and where do you even begin, and how are you going to know everything? Which, you’re not, which Kami and I talked about in that first interview. -

The Problem with Mixed Drinks or Cocktails Mixology history comes partially from herbal medicine and partially from pharmacy After the end of Prohibition there was increasing commercialization of alcohol distillation Increasing acceptance of mixed drinks with high alcohol content Increase in bars and speakeasy selling good times, and pushing high-alcohol, high-tastes drinks Lead to over consumption of sugar and alcohol, which lead to negative health effects. -

Vol. 7(7), 2015, 474-476 Therapeutic Uses of Peppermint –A Review Aishwarya Balakrishnan, Saveetha Dental College,Chennai-77 Abstract: Peppermint (Mentha piperita, also known as M. balsamea Willd), is a hybrid mint, a cross between watermint and spearmint. The plant, indigenous to Europe and the Middle East, is now widespread in cultivation in many regions of the world. It is found wild occasionally with its parent species. The concentrated oil of peppermint has a high menthol content. The oil also contains menthone and menthyl esters, particularly menthyl acetate. Dried peppermint typically has volatile oil containing menthol, menthone , menthyl acetate ,menthofuran and 1,8-cineol. Peppermint oil also contains small amounts of many additional compounds including limonene, pulegone, caryophyllene and pinene. According to the German Commission E monographs, peppermint oil (as well as peppermint leaf) has been used internally as an antispasmodic (upper gastrointestinal tract and bile ducts) and to treat irritable bowel syndrome, catarrh of the respiratory tract, and inflammation of the oral mucosa. Externally, peppermint oil has been used for myalgia and neuralgia. According to Commission E, peppermint oil may also act as a carminative, cholagogue, antibacterial, and secretolytic, and it has a cooling action. Enteric-coated peppermint oil capsules (Colpermin) have been used as an orally administered antispasmodic premedication in colonoscopy. Key Words : Mentha piperita, peppermint, menthone. ROCK Consulting Botanist, Board of Agriculture and Forestry HONOLULU: HAWAIIAN GAZETTE CO., LTD. 1913 ALPHABETICAL LIST OF HAWAIIAN NAMES OF PLANTS. The following list of Hawaiian plant-names has been compiled from various sources. Hillebrand in his valuable Flora of the Hawaiian Islands has given many Hawaiian names, especially of the more common species; these are incorporated in this list with a few corrections. Nearly all Hawaiian plant-names found in this list and not in Hillebrand's Flora were secured from Mr. Francis Gay of the Island of Kauai, an old resident in this Terri tory and well acquainted with its plants from a layman's stand point. It was the writer's privilege to camp with Mr. Gay in the mountains of Kauai collecting botanical material; for almost every species he could give the native name, which he had se cured in the early days from old and reliable natives. Mr. Gay had made spatter prints of many of the native plants in a large record book with their names and uses, as well as their symbolic meaning when occurring in mele (songs) or olioli (chants), at tached to them. For all this information the writer is indebted mainly to Mr. Francis Gay and also to Mr. Augustus F. Knudsen of the same Island. The writer also secured Hawaiian names from old na tives and Kahunas (priests) in the various islands of the group. -

Recipes From Chef Walter Whitewater Pinto Bean Spread* Ingredients: • 5 cloves garlic (or to taste), finely chopped, roasted or raw • Two 15.5-ounce cans pinto beans, half the liquid reserved, or 3 cups cooked pinto beans with 3 tablespoons bean juice reserved; additional 1 tablespoon pinto beans reserved for garnish • 2 to 4 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice (to taste) • 1 teaspoon kosher or sea salt • Black pepper to taste • 1 teaspoon mild red chile powder (optional) Directions: In a food processor, puree the garlic with the pinto beans until it is a fine puree. Add the lemon juice, salt, and freshly ground black pepper and process in the food processor until completely mixed and creamy. Blend until there are no lumps or unblended beans. Use a little of the reserved bean juice to make the mixture creamy and smooth until you reach your desired texture. Transfer the mixture to a medium serving bowl. Garnish with the reserved beans and top with red chile powder. Makes about 3 cups NOTE: One 15.5-ounce can of beans equals 1½ cups of beans. Savory Tamales With Sweet Potato Topped With Red Chile Sauce* Ingredients: For the Tamale Masa • 2 cups cooked white sweet potatoes (about 2 large potatoes, baked for approximately 1 hour 45 minutes at 350 degrees, peeled) • 4 cups dry yellow-corn masa harina flour • 2 teaspoons kosher or sea salt • 2 teaspoons baking powder • 2 cups warm water • ¼ to ½ cup red chile sauce, from pods (See recipe on next page.) Se muestra la distribución de las familias Agavaceae y Nolinaceae en América y México. Para México se determinó la presencia de 402 taxa, 342 de ellos pertenecen a los géneros Agave, Beschorneria, Furcraea, Hesperaloii, Manfreda, Polianthes, Prochnyanthes y Yucca de la familia Agavaceae, en tanto que 60 corresponden a los géneros Beaucarnea, Calibanus, Dasylirion y Nolina de la familia Nolinaceae. Se presenta también la lista actualizada de las especies de ambas familias, ordenadas alfabéticamente. Para cada taxon se señala su distribución por estado y por provincia florística. Los estados más ricos son: Oaxaca con 63 taxa, Durango con 52, Puebla con 50, San Luis Potosí y Sonora con 47 y Chihuahua con 45. En cuanto a las provincias florísticas con un número mayor de taxa están: las Serranías Meridionales, Sierra Madre Occidental y Altiplanicie. Para México, hasta el momento, se han realizado cinco floras regionales y cuatro listados florísticos, en los que se aborda el estudio de las Agavaceae y Nolinaceae a diferentes niveles. Los géneros Agave, Beaucarnea, Beschorneria, Ma11freda y Prochnyanthes han sido objeto de tratamientos taxonómicos; otros como Dasylirion, Furcraea y Polianthes se encuentran en diferentes etapas de desarrollo, en tanto que Calibanus, Hesperaloii, Nolina, Yucca y varios grupos de Agave, requieren una revisión actualizada. -

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) proposed a three level framework that includes landscape assessments (Level I), rapid assessments (Level II), and intensive surveys of wetland communities (Level III). The EPA conducted a national wetland condition assessment in 2011 using a new rapid assessment method (USA-RAM) that was not calibrated to specific regions. The objectives of this study were to compare the relationships between USA-RAM to the Level I and III assessments, analyze the influence of spatial scale on Level I analysis, and determine whether within-wetland or landscape features were more important in structuring macroinvertebrate communities. Plant communities from 22 wetlands of varying levels of landscape disturbance were surveyed in 2012 and 2013 and macroinvertebrate communities were surveyed twice in the 2013.
