The Bolo Bolo of the Natives of Nigeria. It is a very decorative plant (Tiliaceae) with large showy rose pink flowers which however fade rapidly when plants are cut. [Continuation of text] In the nineties this was exported as a valuable fiber plant and was thought to be a rival of jute, bringing £20-0-0 a ton on the market. The preparation of the fiber is the same as that for jute. Cf. Holland Useful Plants of Nigeria Kew Bull Add Ser Nine p. 108. Dr. Deweys opinion on this should be obtained. If of no fiber value then send to South Florida to grow as an ornamental. From Jala Sierra Leone. W. Africa 1-21- 27 1152 [In ink]73509 Chrysophyllum prunifolium pruniforme, Bathe (Pierre Sug.) A tree 30 ft. high related to our star apple and should be grown and tested as a stock for it and for breeding [Break in text, in ink] Mailed from Cameroon 4/4/27 Seeds arrived OK in Wash 73 days en route [Continuation of text] purposes. Collected by Dr. J. M. Dalziel in Sierra Leone near Jala Ag. Ex. Station. This is probably the Prune du Gubo or NCEMBE. I did not have an opportunity to taste the fruit a ripe fruit but understand it is an edible one. 1-21-27. 1153 Calotropis procera.The giant milkweed. A striking plant related to our large Asclepias cornuta and reminding one of it only the Calotropis has immense leaves and grows into a small tree. The latex is poisonous to take internally and the floss is used for stuffing mattresses. The milky juice is mixed with salt & used to remove hair from hides. One of the interesting economic plants of Africa. Its close relative C. gingania occurs in India. Collected by Dr. J. M. Dalziel in Gambia (Georgetown) 1-7-27 1154 [In ink] 73521 Apocynaceae Climbing shrub with large 6 in. long pods and characteristic brown seeds with long silky hairs attached. Dr. Dalziel was unable to determine this species. It [Break in text, in ink] 4/427. Arrived OK apparently in Wash. [Continuation of text] may be a new one. These seeds should be given to Mr. Keys to grow and see if this plant has rubber possibilities. Gathered at dusk one evening in the Bush near the American Mission Station United Brotherhood at Tiama(?) near Jala Sierra Leone. Mr. Leader Am. Mission of Tiama can get more if necessary. 1-20-27 1155 [In ink] 73010 Elaeophorbia drupifera, Stapf. A striking peculiar fleshy leaved tree 30 feet or so high which is sometimes grown because of its drouth resistant qualities in yards etc. I found two trees in the dooryard of the Catholic Mission School [Break in text, in ink] See Photo 15016-9 and 14952-2 on Uruvela plain gold coast [Continuation of text} at Ste. Isabel Fernando Po(See photo). The genus is Monotypic & extends from Sierra Guinea to the lower Kongo. According to Johson [Break in text, in ink] 3/25/27 Arrived OK. Wash. [Continuation of text] the plant produces “paste rubber” and certainly it has a large amount of latex. Should grow in South Florida. Call to Keys attention. Send Chapman Field. May be valuable for its rubber line Not a bad street tree either, very drouth resistant. Ste. Isabel Fernando Po 1-4-1927 [In ink] Five trees in rock pit Chapman Field Garden. Small tree in my patio at Kampong. Nov. 1934 1156 Cyrtosperma senegalense (Schott) Eng. An amazing aroid which sends up its spathe on a tall spiny stem 10 feet tall. The spathe itself is 16 inches long. As a landscape plant for the shores [Break in text, in ink] 3/25/27. “No seed” reported arriving in Wash. J. A. Stevenson [Continuation of text] Coll. near Duala Cameroon 3/6/27 [Break in text, in ink] 4/4/27. Seeds in bottle fermented and may have suffered. Seeds wrapped in oil paper rotted but seeds may be alive. Seeds in moss or peat above came in beautiful condition. All planted in Quarantine House. [Continuation of text] of ponds in tropical regions this would be a most interesting species. It forms associations of considerable size and when in bloom its tall stems & spathes look like giant spears. See photo (14949-1 to 6). Requires sandy wet soil and high degree of air humidity & tropical conditions. Duala, Cameroon 2/6/27 [In ink] Doing splendidly in Solidad Garden Cuba. About 1933. See Photos of AA & me. D. F. 1157 [In ink] 74656 5 Cola acuminata Seeds from a fruit gathered in the wild jungle back of Duala Cameroons, West Africa. This may have greater vigor that the ordinary cultivated Kola of commerce. I should send it to Johnsen in Panama Canal Zone for his collection in the Plant Introduction Garden. The Kola Nut of commerce comes from wild as well as cultivated trees in the whole W. Africa region of Cameroon. D. F. Coll. Feb. 6, 1927 1158 [In ink]Seed washed out!! 78024 Undetermined Zingiberaceae. A tall large leaved striking species of Zingiberaceae which I was unable to determine. Collected in the jungle near the Taia River at Mano Sierra Leone. 1-22-27 [Break in text, in ink] 3/25/27 Arrived OK. Wash. [Continuation of text] See See herbarium specimens of this same species. Excellent for borders of pools & greenhouse use. Send to Chapman Field to propagate. Undetermined sp. of Zingiberaceae. Coll. in Jungle on Taia River at Mano Sierra Leone. 1-22-27. D. F. 1159 [In ink] 78022 Vigna? I take these seeds to belong to [?????] Vigna. They are from some dried up plants which were growing beside the trail between Victoria and Bota [Break in text, in ink] 3/25/27. Arrived OK. Wash. [Continuation of text] Cameroons W. Africa. Call to attention of Mr. Morse who may want to grow them in his trial plats. 2-9-1927. D. F. 1160 [In ink] 78005 Crotalaria sp. Compare with No. 1120. The plants of this species struck me as being unusually vigorous and as they grew near the sea where they must often have been hit by salt spray I imagine they are unusually resistant [Break in text, in ink] 3/25 Arrived OK. Wash. [Continuation of text] to salt air. I do not know whether this is an introduced species in W. Africa but think it may be. Found beside trail from Victoria to Bota Cameroons. For trial in comparison with other species ag and strains. Crotalaria Coll. 2-9-27. 1161 [In ink] Seed rotted. 73002 Chrysophyllum cainito. A white fleshed variety of the star apple whose fruits attain a large size, 3 ½ inches in diameter. I had never seen so large fruited a variety & I was doubtful [Break in text, in ink] 3/25/27. Arrived OK. Wash. [Continuation of text] of its being this species of Chrysophyllum. It might be C. rufum. Mart. So far as Engle & Prantl’s description goes. A handsome tree with beautiful golden pubescens under the leaves and immense fruits. This is worthy of very extensive trial in South Florida where already one or two trees of a small fruited form have fruited. Botanic Gardens Victoria. Cameroons. W. Africa. 2-9-27 1162 [In ink] This looks more like a Kola Drd Dr. Dalziel says. 73068 Pterygota kamerunensis ?? A Sterculiaceae bearing large scarlet fruits the size of an orange (See 5 X 7 photo). This fruit – a pod – is irregular in shape with innumerable small irregular protuberances. D) In water in bottle putrid. [Continuation of text} large numbers at these it must be a very striking sight. There appear to be only 2 3 species in this peculiar genus of Sterculiaceae 2 of which occur in India and the third here in Cameroons. This single fruit was found by Captain Wall of the Utowana in the Botanic Garden at Victoria Cameroons W. Africa.
