July 2013 List Blu-Ray New Releases tel 0115 982 7500 fax 0115 982 7020 JULY 2013 LIST See inside for valid dates Dear Customer Towards the end of this month, we see the release of an eagerly awaited boxset: Karajan’s complete 1970s recordings for DG. When the 1960s set was issued around a year ago, it proved extremely popular and, due to the number of queries already received, we expect this set to go along similar lines. It will be a limited edition set again, so don’t hang around too long if you are wanting a copy! Beautifully presented and including a 200+pp book, it is certainly an item worth treasuring. Another great conductor making a strong appearance in our list this month is Daniel Barenboim. His new recording of Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique with the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra should be worth a spin, plus Decca are also issuing a 4 DVD boxset of their great performances of the Beethoven Symphonies from the Proms last year. A brand new special offer on the complete BIS label has now started and they have a couple of exciting new releases this month: Yevgeny Sudbin’s Rachmaninov Piano Concerto no.1 (coupled with Symphony no.1) plus the latest in the series of Bach from Masaaki Suzuki, the third volume of secular cantatas. These, plus the rest of the BIS catalogue are reduced by 20% over the next couple of months. Other labels that we have agreed promotions on this month include the French label Mirare, German label Oehms and Italian label Dynamic (CDs & DVDs). If you haven’t done so already, we would urge you to explore these independent labels. They are all of the highest quality and certainly deserving of our support! Dear Customer, As summer gives way to autumn (for those of us in the northern hemisphere at least), the record labels start rolling out their big guns in the run-up to the festive season. This year is no exception, with some notable high-profile issues: the complete Tchaikovsky Project from the Czech Philharmonic under Semyon Bychkov, and Richard Strauss tone poems from Chailly in Lucerne (both on Decca); the Beethoven Piano Concertos from Jan Lisiecki, and Mozart Piano Trios from Barenboim (both on DG). The independent labels, too, have some particularly strong releases this month, with Chandos discs including Bartók's Bluebeard’s Castle from Edward Gardner in Bergen, and the keenly awaited second volume of British tone poems under Rumon Gamba. Meanwhile Hyperion bring out another volume (no.79!) of their Romantic Piano Concerto series, more Machaut from the wonderful Orlando Consort (see our cover picture), and Brahms songs from soprano Harriet Burns. Another Hyperion Brahms release features as our 'Disc of the Month': the Violin Sonatas in a superb new recording from star team Alina Ibragimova and Cédric Tiberghien (see below).

  • Joyce Yang Piano Blessed With
Joyce Yang Piano Blessed with “poetic and sensitive pianism” (Washington Post) and a “wondrous sense of color” (San Francisco Classical Voice), pianist Joyce Yang captivates audiences with her virtuosity, lyricism, and interpretive sensitivity. As a Van Cliburn International Piano Competition silver medalist and Avery Fisher Career Grant recipient, Yang showcases her colorful musical personality in solo recitals and collaborations with the world’s top orchestras and chamber musicians. Yang came to international attention in 2005 when she won the silver medal at the 12th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. The youngest contestant at 19 years old, she took home two additional awards: the Steven De Groote Memorial Award for Best Performance of Chamber Music (with the Takàcs Quartet) and the Beverley Taylor Smith Award for Best Performance of a New Work. Since her spectacular debut, she has blossomed into an “astonishing artist” (Neue Zürcher Zeitung). She has performed as soloist with the New York Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra, the Baltimore, Detroit, Houston, Milwaukee, San Francisco, Sydney, and Toronto symphony orchestras, Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, and the BBC Philharmonic (among many others), working with such distinguished conductors as Edo de Waart, Lorin Maazel, James Conlon, Leonard Slatkin, David Robertson, Bramwell Tovey, Peter Oundjian, and Jaap van Zweden. In recital, Yang has taken the stage at New York’s Lincoln Center and Metropolitan Museum; the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC; Chicago’s Symphony Hall; and Zurich’s Tonhalle. Yang kicks off the 2015/16 season with a tour of eight summer festivals (Aspen, Bridgehampton, Grand Tetons, La Jolla, Ravinia, Seattle, Southeastern Piano Festival, and Bravo! Vail) before commencing a steady stream of debuts, return engagements, and notable chamber music concerts.

Since her triumph in the 1985 international Bach piano competition in Toronto, and her subse- quent Bach recording for Deutsche Grammophon, Angela Hewitt has been hailed as "one of the outstanding Bach pianists of our time" (Sunday Times [London], 1997). In 1994 she embarked on a 10-year project to record all the major keyboard works by Bach for the Hyperion label. She has performed throughout North America and Europe, as well as in Japan, Australia, China, Mexico, and the former Soviet Union. Born into a musical family, Hewitt began her piano studies at the age of 3, performing in public at 4 and a year later winning her first scholarship. She also studied violin, recorder, singing, and classical ballet. At 9, she gave her first recital at Toronto's Royal Conservatory of Music, where she studied from 1964 to 1973. Hewitt then studied with French pianist Jean-Paul Sevilla at the University of Ottawa, from which she earned her bachelor of music degree at the age of 18.

Andrea Lucchesini SCHUBERT • LATE PIANO WORKS VOL. II Franz Schubert Late Piano Works • Vol. II Piano Sonata No. 21 in B-flat major, D. 960 I. Molto moderato 21:54 II. Andante sostenuto 10:38 III. Scherzo. Allegro vivace con delicatezza – Trio 4:11 IV. Allegro, ma non troppo 9:05 Three Piano Pieces, D. 946 I. Allegro assai 14:36 II. Allegretto 13:08 III. Allegro 5:16 “The sad «very last» one” – Schubert’s Sonata in B-flat major “A musician visiting Vienna for the first time may well be amused for a while by the convivial hustle and bustle in the streets, and he will often stop in amazement in front of the tower of St Stephen’s Cathedral; but soon he is reminded of the city’s proximity to a churchyard which is more important to him than anything else the city has to offer, where two of the most magnificent of his fellow artists are laid to rest only a few paces from each other. So, like me, many a young musician may soon have wandered out after the first noisy days to the Währinger Kirchhof, to lay a floral offering on those tombs, even if it were a wild rose bush, as I found planted on Beethoven’s grave. Franz Schubert’s resting place was unadorned.” No more than eleven and ten years respectively had passed since the deaths of Beethoven and Schubert when Robert Schumann visited the Währing cemetery in Vienna. But the traveller from Leipzig did not content himself with merely visiting the graves: Schumann also called on Ferdinand Schubert, who looked after a wealth of unpublished manuscripts by his brother Franz.

[email protected] Your Account Number: {MM:Account Number} {MM:Postcode} {MM:Address5} {MM:Address4} {MM:Address3} {MM:Address2} {MM:Address1} {MM:Name} 1 Welcome! Dear Customer, Young Norwegian soprano Lise Davidsen has gradually been garnering attention in recent years, perhaps making the leap to a wider awareness following her award of Gramophone’s ‘Young Artist of the Year’ in 2018 and her sublime performance of Strauss’s ‘Morgen’ at the ceremony. Ariadne was her major role last year; 2019 sees her take on the part of Elisabeth in Tannhauser - Zurich and Munich have already had the pleasure and she will be taking it to Bayreuth in July, under the baton of Valery Gergiev in a brand new production. Pleasingly for those of us who won’t manage to catch her live, her debut album on Decca has just been released, featuring two arias from Tannhauser plus orchestral lieder (and one aria) by Richard Strauss. We have been hugely impressed, especially considering her mere 32 years of age, making it a clear choice for Disc of the Month. Please see our website for our full review. Other new releases to highlight for June include a second lieder recital from Decca, performed by none other than Renee Fleming; Hyperion issue the latest in their series of ‘Romantic Violin Concertos’, this volume featuring works by Lassen, Scharwenka and Langgaard; the Vaughan Williams Society offer us his works for viola and piano via the Albion label; the final instalment in the Halle’s superb Ring Cycle (Siegfried) is released on the Halle’s own label; and stunning vocal ensemble Vox Luminis give us a treat in the shape of works by the Bach Family.

  • Marco Polo – the Label of Discovery
Marco Polo – The Label of Discovery Doubt was expressed by his contemporaries as to the truth of Marco Polo’s account of his years at the court of the Mongol Emperor of China. For some he was known as a man of a million lies, and one recent scholar has plausibly suggested that the account of his travels was a fiction inspired by a family dispute. There is, though, no doubt about the musical treasures daily uncovered by the Marco Polo record label. To paraphrase Marco Polo himself: All people who wish to know the varied music of men and the peculiarities of the various regions of the world, buy these recordings and listen with open ears. The original concept of the Marco Polo label was to bring to listeners unknown compositions by well-known composers. There was, at the same time, an ambition to bring the East to the West. Since then there have been many changes in public taste and in the availability of recorded music. Composers once little known are now easily available in recordings. Marco Polo, in consequence, has set out on further adventures of discovery and exploration. One early field of exploration lay in the work of later Romantic composers, whose turn has now come again. In addition to pioneering recordings of the operas of Franz Schreker, Der ferne Klang (The Distant Sound), Die Gezeichneten (The Marked Ones) and Die Flammen (The Flames), were three operas by Wagner’s son, Siegfried. Der Bärenhäuter (The Man in the Bear’s Skin), Banadietrich and Schwarzschwanenreich (The Kingdom of the Black Swan) explore a mysterious medieval world of German legend in a musical language more akin to that of his teacher Humperdinck than to that of his father.

The Development of the Russian Piano Concerto in the Nineteenth Century Jeremy Paul Norris Doctor of Philosophy Department of Music 1988 December The Development of the Russian Piano Concerto in the Nineteenth Century Jeremy Paul Norris The Russian piano concerto could not have had more inauspicious beginnings. Unlike the symphonic poem (and, indirectly, the symphony) - genres for which Glinka, the so-called 'Father of Russian Music', provided an invaluable model: 'Well? It's all in "Kamarinskaya", just as the whole oak is in the acorn' to quote Tchaikovsky - the Russian piano concerto had no such indigenous prototype. All that existed to inspire would-be concerto composers were a handful of inferior pot- pourris and variations for piano and orchestra and a negligible concerto by Villoing dating from the 1830s. Rubinstein's five con- certos certainly offered something more substantial, as Tchaikovsky acknowledged in his First Concerto, but by this time the century was approaching its final quarter. This absence of a prototype is reflected in all aspects of Russian concerto composition. Most Russian concertos lean perceptibly on the stylistic features of Western European composers and several can be justly accused of plagiarism. Furthermore, Russian composers faced formidable problems concerning the structural organization of their concertos, a factor which contributed to the inability of several, including Balakirev and Taneyev, to complete their works. Even Tchaikovsky encountered difficulties which he was not always able to overcome. The most successful Russian piano concertos of the nineteenth century, Tchaikovsky's No.1 in B flat minor, Rimsky-Korsakov's Concerto in C sharp minor and Balakirev's Concerto in E flat, returned ii to indigenous sources of inspiration: Russian folk song and Russian orthodox chant.
