JOHN COWAN - SIXTY [DELUXE EDITION] Compass 4630 Release date: 8/26/14 1. The Things I Haven’t Done (Bruce Coughlan) Bruce Coughlan Music (SESAC) The opening track, by Bruce Coughlan, a talented singer-songwriter from British Columbia with whom I’ve had the privilege of collaborating over the years, captures the theme of Sixty: I’ve been blessed with an amazing life and career. As with most of us, my journey has not been without loss and sacrifice, but by and large, I’ve been able to make a living doing what I love. One of the joys in my life has been to sing on records of people I admire greatly. Singing on Rodney Crowell’s recordings since the landmark “Houston Kid,” has been a source of great pride and satisfaction for me. I was a fan of his long before our lives intersected and we became friends. Having Rod on this song means very much to me. University of Central Florida, 2011 A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in the Department of English in the College of Arts and Humanities at the University of Central Florida Orlando, Florida Spring Term 2015 ABSTRACT This thesis examines contemporary folk music from no earlier than 2006, specifically music of the bands The Decemberists, Fleet Foxes, and Bon Iver. Providing a close reading of select songs, I prove that modern music is seeing a revival in the Romantic Era and Transcendentalist ideals and philosophy. The works and philosophy of Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772-1834), William Wordsworth (1770-1850), John Keats (1795-1821), as well as Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862), Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882), among others and their critics are all considered for points of comparison to the modern lyrics. -

Fleet Foxes’ Shore
:: View email as a web page :: On the latest episode of our music podcast Indiecast, we reviewed two of the biggest fall releases on the indie calendar, Sufjan Stevens’ The Ascension and Fleet Foxes’ Shore. Both acts first came to prominence in the aughts playing beautiful and epic folk-rock songs, though since then they’ve each taken their own idiosyncratic and at times fraught career paths. In 2020, they have made much different records — The Ascension is a long and dense song cycle about the state of America (hint: It’s not in a good place!) set to some of the poppiest music of Stevens’ career. Meanwhile, Shore finds Fleet Foxes returning to the robust and deeply catchy sound of their 2008 self-titled debut, after the difficult and fascinating curveball that was 2017’s Crack-Up. While Sufjan Stevens and Fleet Foxes remain two of the most commercially successful and critically acclaimed indie acts of their generation, are their new albums any good? Find out what we had to say here. -- Steven Hyden, Uproxx Cultural Critic and author of This Isn't Happening: Radiohead's "Kid A" And The Beginning Of The 21st Century In case you missed it... Tori Amos' Little Earthquakes was included in Rolling Stone's revised list of the 500 Best Albums Of All Time. Revisit the album as part of our Tori Amos collection on YouTube. The latest episode of Indiecast recommends Ohms, the new album from Deftones. One-third of musicians surveyed are considering leaving the music industry due to ongoing pandemic struggles.
