ek?k esyk 2020 esa uekfe xaxs dh xfrfof/k;ksa dh >yfd;ka 5 GANGA REJ Magazine Through Wetland THE IMPORTANCE OF WETLAND Ganga basin is endowed with a diverse wetland regime, which ranges from high altitude oligotrophic in the , the marshes and swamps of the terai region, floodplain and riverine wetlands in the Gangetic alluvial plains to coastal wetlands in the Sundarban deltas. Wetlands are among the most productive ecosystems. They provide an important range of environmental, social and economic services. Wetland are the vital link between land and water. Unfortunately, many lakes and wetlands are reported to have undergone quantitative and qualitative degradation in the last few decades. They are under increasing stress due to growing demands, urbanization and human interference in the catchments. Heavy sedimentation and siltation, organic pollution, eutrophication, reduced inflows etc. are some of the major problems which are common to most of the lakes and wetlands. A prime need of hour to protect wetlands is to understand the human wetland interaction. Estimation of fringe human population, their historical change and their dependence on the wetlands for the resources can find out the stress on the wetlands. Public awareness and mass involvement are necessary for the protection of the wetlands. World Wetland Day World Wetland Day is celebrated on 2nd February of every year to commemorate the Ramsar Convention held on this date in 1971 for global understanding to conserve and preserve wetlands throughout the globe. The theme of this year is 'Wetland and Biodiversity- 12 Ramsar sites in Ganga basin out of 37 in '. NMCG celebrated the World Wetland Day at Haiderpur Wetland as Haiderpur Festival. The celebration, along with technical discussion among national and international experts spread over two days (2nd-3rd Feb) was conducted in close association with WWF india, Uttar Pradesh Forest Department, District Administration. This event was organized to celebrate the richness of Haiderpur Wetland which spreads over 1200 hectares and is home to about 235 bird species and species like swamp deer. This Wetland is formed by the backwaters of the Madhya Ganga barrage and fed by River Solani flowing through Shukrtaal. This event was held with an objective to raise the awareness about the ecological values of the wetland and launch a collaborative programme for conservation of this wetland and its catchment. A Bird Festival along with various interactive and sensitization activities like nature trails, quiz, drawing competition & technical sessions were organised. Shri UP Singh, Secretary, Department of Water Resources, River Development & Ganga Rejuvenation, Ministry of Jal Shakti, Shri Sanjay Kumar, Divisional Commissioner, Saharanpur and Shri Ravi Singh, CEO, WWF India participated in the event. On this occasion, 51 turtle hatchlings were released in the Ganga, which had been rescued and reared under the community led turtle conservation programme.
