Lee University’s 176th commencement was held May 4 with a record number of graduates and record attendance at three venues. Commencement speaker Dick DeVos, of busi- ness, political and educational fame, told almost 600 Lee University graduates their lives after college will be much like a skiing adventure. Devos, president of the prominent investment management fi rm The Windquest Group, pro- vided 574 graduates with some advice he said he learned years ago on a ski trip to Colorado. He told the Lee graduates “You have traveled a path through the trees (in college), and now you must tackle your trees (in life).” DeVos said he traversed his trees, which included many opportunities, his marriage, his career and business decisions such as the Am- way Corporations and the Orlando Magic NBA basketball team. “You will see your God-willed openings through the trees,” he informed this year’s Lee graduates. He implied they will fi nd success, if they remain focused through the months ahead, and look for the opening (opportunities) through the trees. Following a welcome, Dr. Paul Conn recog- nized the university’s academic leaders, faculty, as well as visiting parents, siblings, grandpar- ents, spouses and children of the new graduates. There was special music from the Lee Singers, under the direction of Brad Moff ett, prior to the keynote address by DeVos.

By CHRISTY ARMSTRONG Staff Writer GOAL Academy, Bradley County Schools’ alter- native school, celebrated 44 graduates during its commencement Saturday, May 18. The ceremony, which followed a reception for the graduates, took place in the “gymatorium” at Ocoee Middle School. “We have an amazing group of seniors who have accomplished things that they were told or thought were impossible,” school spokesman Gary Peltier said. The Class of 2019 is notably larger than the Class of 2018, which included 25 graduates. Pelt- ier also noted many of this year’s graduates were “already part of the workforce in the community” and were completing volunteer hours for the Ten- nessee Promise scholarship program. The school, which off ers instruction for stu- dents who have fallen behind in their coursework, places a heavy emphasis on workforce readiness Banner photo, DANIEL GUY in addition to regular high school studies.
