In particular the focus is on how the narratives and representations relate to one another. Such an investigation provides us with useful insight into the people and events of 69 and how contemporaries viewed the actors and the events. These various presentations, most notably the works of five ancient historians and biographers, give 69 the distinction of being one of the best documented years in all antiquity. Historical scholarship has typically sought to determine which of these authors was the most accurate on the points which they disagreed. These points of difference, largely subjective opinion and therefore equally valid, illuminate instead the diverse ways in which an event can be interpreted. Ask that question to anyone and you will get a variety of descriptive phrases about whatever you indicated. Some character traits are quantifiable: a person’s height, a flower’s color, the nature of the terrain, when an event took place, etc. But what of such intangibles as personality, motivation, or cause? These subjective modes of characterization vary considerably between different observers, depending on their point of view and their relationship with the person or event described, even for a common person or event. The year 69CE provides us with a wealth of striking events, dynamic people, and literate observers whose works have, fortunately, survived.1 This so called ‘long year’ saw both a brutal civil war in the Roman world and the recognition of four different men as Princeps, or emperor, events which gave rise to the other epithet for 69, ‘the year of the four emperors.’ 2 Yet it is for more than the events of the year, which included two large battles between Roman legions, the violent deaths of three emperors, two by the mob and one by his own hands, and the burning of the Temple of Jupiter Optimus Maximus, that 69 can be identified as ‘the long year.’ The year 69 also holds the distinction of being the one in all antiquity about which we have the most detailed information.3 This is largely due to the writings of five different extant writers who dealt 1 All dates are CE unless otherwise noted. 2 The appropriate title is ‘princeps’ and that of the system of government the ‘principate’, however the terms emperor and empire may safely be used as it conveys an accurate understanding of the position, especially as it had evolved by the year 69. 3 Peter Garnsey and Richard Saller, The early Principate: Augustus to Trajan . Between these works and a variety of coins and inscriptions we can decipher, often with no more than a few days uncertainty, the events of this civil war throughout the entire year on a level of detail that is impossible for any year before 69, or for many years after.4 This wealth of information includes details about a number of colorful characters. This is where the issue of characterization comes in. Each of the five authors presented his own version of the events of 69 and the characters involved, and while they agreed on general facts, their opinions differ. Scholars have spent much effort determining which of these authors was, both in general and in given situations, the ‘most accurate’ in his characterization. However, because characterization is at least partly subjective, the fact that one account seems less biased or more balanced does not necessarily make it either more or less accurate than another. All we can say for certain is what each author thought of the person or event in question. 5 In fact, these authors’ presentations of character and the choices they made in depicting character tell us as much about the author in question as about the event itself, thus giving insight into what certain groups of people thought and felt about this event at the time of writing. The purpose of this thesis, therefore, is to look at the way four of these five authors characterized the people and events of 69 both individually and in comparison with one another in order to determine both where the accounts differ and why they do. It will also study a sample of the coins and inscriptions dating either from 69 or concerning major participants in events in order to get a glimpse of how the people involved wanted 4 Charles L. I understand that my thesis may be made electronically available to the public. ii Abstract This paper examines the changing attitudes of Gallo-Romans from the time of Caesar's conquest in the 50s BCE to the start of Vespasian's reign in 70-71 CE and how Roman prejudice shaped those attitudes. I first examine the conflicted opinions of the Gauls in Caesar's time and how they eventually banded together against him but were defeated. Next, the activities of each Julio-Claudian emperor are examined to see how they impacted Gaul and what the Gallo-Roman response was. Throughout this period there is clear evidence of increased Romanisation amongst the Gauls and the prominence of the region is obvious in imperial policy. This changes with Nero's reign where Vindex's rebellion against the emperor highlights the prejudices still effecting Roman attitudes. This only becomes worse in the rebellion of Civilis the next year. After these revolts, the Gallo-Romans appear to retreat from imperial offices and stick to local affairs, likely as a direct response to Rome's rejection of them.

Readers need to be alert to such passages, for Vespasian was preceded by three emperors who got as far as he did but failed to keep their footing there. In essence, Tacitus tells the stories of fall (Galba, Otho, Vitellius) and rise (Otho, Vitellius, Vespasian) three times each, and uses the failures of Vespasian's predecessors to help explain Vespasian's success. Given what remains of the Histories (the last two weeks of Galba, the three months of Otho's principate, Vitellius's uprising against Galba, his defeat of Otho, and his eight-month principate, the Flavian uprising against and defeat of Vitellius, and Vespasian's first eight or so months as princeps in absentia), we can see only how Vespasian succeeded in establishing himself. As to how far, according to Tacitus, success carried into the rest of his decade in power, we are in the dark.

In this bestseller written by Steven Pressfield an anonymous Athenian reports the tale that his grandfather Jason told him shortly before his death: when asked whether there was a person to whom his thoughts kept returning (p. 24), the old man related how a certain Polemides, who was in prison on a charge of the murder of Alcibiades, had told him the story of his life, which for a long time had been dominated by his alleged victim. Kline, M.A. ***** The Ohio State University 2007 Dissertation Committee: Professor David Riede, Adviser Approved by Professor Clare Simmons _______________________ Professor Amanpal Garcha Adviser Graduate Program in English ABSTRACT Educated Speech: Victorian Philology and the Literary Languages of Matthew Arnold and Arthur Hugh Clough argues that Matthew Arnold’s and Arthur Hugh Clough’s poetry and its political and social resonances can be fruitfully illuminated by focusing on the extended encounter between the language of their poems and Victorian philology—the nineteenth-century discourse that brought together issues of language, history, class, culture, and nationalism. This dissertation explores the ways that Clough’s and Arnold’s understanding of their medium was shaped by a sustained engagement with this complex and heterogeneous cluster of linguistic ideas including the persistence of eighteenth-century concepts of language, Romantic philology, and the emergence of historicist/comparativist orientations to language that all co-exist during the Victorian period. I argue that Arnold’s and Clough’s evolving understanding of language emerges from the ways in which Victorian philological insights are mediated through the Victorian educational establishment, and subsequently has such a mediated understanding is translated into specific and significant aesthetic features in their poetry such as the use of slang or the deployment of the simile. Further, because both Clough and Arnold subscribed to the central creed of Victorian philology—that language indexed cultural health—, the ii grounding of such aesthetic and formal qualities of the poems in this discourse allows us to recover or foreground additional aspects of the political and cultural resonances of Arnold’s and Clough’s poetry.

He was the brother of suffragist Anne Clough, who ended up as principal of Newnham College, Cambridge. <b>Life</b> Arthur Clough was born in Liverpool to James Butler Clough, a cotton merchant of Welsh descent, and Anne Perfect, from Pontefract in Yorkshire. In 1822 the family moved to the United States, and Clough's early childhood was spent mainly in Charleston, South Carolina. In 1828 Clough and his older brother Charles returned to England to attend school in Chester. In 1829 Clough began attending Rugby School, then under Thomas Arnold, whose strenuous views on life and education he accepted. (See Muscular Christianity.) Cut off to a large degree from his family, he passed a somewhat solitary boyhood, devoted to the school and to early literary efforts in the Rugby Magazine. In 1836 his parents returned to Liverpool, and in 1837 he went with a scholarship to Balliol College, Oxford. Here his contemporaries included Benjamin Jowett, Arthur Penrhyn Stanley, John Campbell Shairp, William George Ward and Frederick Temple. <a href=" Oxford, in 1837, was in the full swirl of the High Church movement led by John Henry Newman. Clough was for a time influenced by this movement, but eventually rejected it. He surprised everyone by graduating from Oxford with only Second Class Honours, but won a fellowship with a tutorship at Oriel College.

    Dan Ruppel Caesar’s Corny Commentaries: Provisions as Power in The Gallic War “Famine makes greater havoc in an army than the enemy, and is more terrible than the sword.” (Veg- etius, Rei Militaris Instituta, 3.3.1) As Rome’s armies set out on wars of conquest and pacification, famine became one of Rome’s greatest fears, but also its harshest tool. Hunger took a significant hold on the Roman conception of military matters. In the mad rage that followed the breach of Jerusalem’s last walls, Josephus attributes a curious turn of pity to the soldiers on behalf of those who died of hunger, before they return to skew- ering helpless men, women and children en masse (BJ 6.402). Similarly, Julius Caesar describes the Gal- lic War in terms of the procurement and management of corn. Though the Roman siege engines took several Gallic camps, these were but episodic victories, whereas the legions’ domination of hunger reigned throughout. Caesar’s flashy moments in the heat of battle garner the most attention in discus- sions of his self-aggrandizement in The Gallic War. However, Caesar constructs his narrative so that the interplay of food and famine show that his victories and ultimately, the pacification of Gaul, relied on his superior ability to control the Gallic food supply. The prevalence of Caesar’s references to corn within such a carefully constructed work indi- cates the importance of the subject not only to the author, but also to his audience. These references, la- conic but often pregnant descriptions of how the various armies secured food (or failed to), permeate his account of the war.

I love you! v ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS Motives For Roman Imperialism in North Africa, 300 BCE to 100 CE by Michael A. DeMonto Master of Arts in History San Diego State University, 2015 Previous examinations of Roman imperialism in North Africa are insufficient because they lack an appreciation of the balance between the defensive, political, and economic motives. These past arguments have focused on specific regions around the Mediterranean world, but have failed to include North Africa – an integral part of the Roman Empire. This region was politically and economically integrated into the empire during the first century CE. This study closely examines the ancient sources for Roman imperialism in North Africa from 300 BCE to 100 CE to construct the narrative for Roman imperialism while juxtaposing corresponding ancient and archaeological evidence. This study examines the ancient and modern constructed narratives against anthropological models for interstate warfare and cooperation. The ancient written sources include Polybius’s Histories, Livy’s Ab Urbe Condita and Periochae, Appian’s Roman History, Dio Cassius’s Roman History, Sallust’s Jugurthine War, Julius Caesar’s De Africo Bello, Velleius Paterculus’s Roman History, Augustus’s Res Gestae Divi Augusti, Tacitus’s Annals and Histories, and Pliny the Elder’s Natural Histories.
