Social Performing Groups and the Building of Community: Odin Teatret, Gardzienice, and Song of the Goat Theatre Anna Porubcansky Goldsmiths, University of London PhD Drama 1 I hereby declare that the work presented in this thesis is my own. Anna Porubcansky 2 Abstract This is a dedicated study of three performing groups with a particular social understanding of performance. Odin Teatret, Gardzienice, and Song of the Goat Theatre have developed unique theatre practices that investigate art as an integrated component of everyday life. The actors’ daily lives incorporate both artistic activities such as training, research, devising, and performance, and social projects such as cultural barters, expeditions, and pedagogical programmes in a conscious attempt to engage with the wider social world. The Odin, Gardzienice, and Song of the Goat’s work therefore extends beyond theatre and into the lives, traditions, and cultural practices of diverse communities around the world. This approach to performance continues a legacy of art that has emerged specifically from Poland as a result of nationalistic and Romantic trends during the nineteenth century. In the eighteenth century, Poland’s borders were erased by the Austrian, Prussian, and Russian Empires. Dividing the country for well over a century, these partitions introduced cultural, linguistic, religious, and political suppression, creating an atmosphere of defiant cultural preservation as the Polish population struggled to assert itself against their oppressors. Artist such as Romantic poets Adam Mickiewicz and Juliusz Słowacki, neo-Romantic dramatist, poet, and painter Stanisław Wyspiański, and, in the twentieth century, directors such as Juliusz Osterwa and Jerzy Grotowski, contributed to a legacy of art that sought to examine and strengthen cultural identity, belonging, and community. -

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ — The third Polish collector banknote — — 200th Birthday Anniversary of Juliusz Słowacki — ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The year 2009 marks double anniversary of Juliusz Słowacki: the 200th anniversary of his birthday and the 160th anniversary of his death. For this reason, the Sejm of the Republic of Poland passed a resolution to commemorate those events and proclaimed the year 2009 as the Year of Juliusz Słowacki. As early as the second half of the 19th century, Słowacki earned one of the top places in the Pantheon of Polish poets of the Romanticism, between Adam Mickiewicz and Zygmunt Krasiński. Słowacki, along with Mickiewicz, created Polish national poetic drama. He was a precursor of irony and grotesque in the Polish literature, and author of poems as well as reflective and philosophical lyrics. To this day, he is a lasting source of ideological and artistic inspiration. Born in Krzemieniec, he died in Paris at the age of 40. Still, he was strongly attached to Warsaw, where he arrived on 15 February 1829. In Warsaw, he worked in the Ministry of Treasury of the Kingdom of Poland (when the November Insurrection broke out, Słowacki moved to the insurrectionary diplomatic bureau of Prince Adam Czartoryski). On 3 March 1831, he left Poland and moved to Western Europe with a diplomatic mission, yet, at that time, ”praising the revolution”. He joined the Insurrection as a signatory of Akt Jedności and upon publication of his Hymn in December 1830 and January 1831, became the leading poet of the November Insurrection. The two patriotic works: Oda do wolności and Kulik published together in December 1830 as a booklet, prove that it was Warsaw where Słowacki became the national poet. -

American Journal of Humanities and Social Science (AJHSS) Volume 6, 2020 Political aspects of contemporary Polish fantasy prose and political fiction Bogdan Trocha, University of Zielona Gora, Poland Abstract: The subject of the article is to examine the relations between the most important political events in Poland in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries and domestic fantastic prose. The author distinguishes three fundamental periods connected with the most important historical moments in contemporary Polish history. These are the events connected with regaining independence and creating a new statehood, the period when Marxists rule in Poland and the time after the democratic revolution of Solidarity. The analyzed material is related to these three periods. Further research is focused on the thematic dependence of specific novels and political aspects of a given period. In relation to the third (most extensive) period, novels that go beyond the canon of the most important political events of that time are also analyzed. The analyses have an indication of specific mechanisms of constructing fantasy novels that take up political motives. The second research objective is to determine the function in which political motifs are introduced into specific literary works. These are both intra text and cultural functions. Keywords: Politics, Democracy, Authoritarianism, Scientific Fiction, Political Fiction, Alternative Reality, Speculative Fiction Introduction The subject of this article is to trace the use of fantastic political motifs by the creators of Polish prose in their novels. It also indicates the historical and political conditions of these treatments and presents the mechanism that governs these literary treatments. As Polish fantasy prose begins to appear at a time when Poland lost its independence to Russia, Prussia and Austria, the 20th century novels written before 1918 (the regaining of independence by Poland) should be taken as the boundary marking our interest. -

religions Article Poems by Polish Female Poets and the Burning Issue of Religion Dorota Walczak-Delanois Faculté de Lettres, Traduction et Communication, Département de Langues et Lettres, Université Libre de Bruxelles, 1050 Bruxelles, Belgium; [email protected] Abstract: The aim of this paper is to show the presence of religion and the particular evolution of lyrical matrixes connected to religion in the Polish poems of female poets. There is a particular presence of women in the roots of the Polish literary and lyrical traditions. For centuries, the image of a woman with a pen in her hand was one of the most important imponderabilia. Until the 19th century, Polish female poets continued to be rare. Where female poets do appear in the historical record, they are linked to institutions such as monasteries, where female intellectuals were able to find relative liberty and a refuge. Many of the poetic forms they used in the 16th, late 17th, and 18th centuries were typically male in origin and followed established models. In the 19th century, the specific image of the mother as a link to the religious portrait of the Madonna and the Mother of God (the first Polish poem presents Bogurodzica, the Virgin Mary, the Mother of Jesus) reinforces women’s new presence. From Adam Mickiewicz’s poem Do matki Polki (To Polish Mother), the term “Polish mother” becomes a separate literary, epistemological, and sociological category. Throughout the 20th century (with some exceptions), the impact of Romanticism and its poetical and religious models remained alive, even if they underwent some modifications. -

Stanisław Wyspiański, związany z modernizmem, przez wielu zwany „ojcem nowoczesnego teatru polskiego”, zbudował fundamenty polskiego teatru, tak jak był on rozumiany i praktykowany w XX w. w dziedzinie dramaturgii i inscenizacji. Two- rzył sztuki teatralne nierozdzielnie związane z ich projektami scenicznymi. Były to „dzieła sztuki teatru”, w których materia utkana była ze słów i obrazów, z wizyjnej poezji i dosadnego realizmu. Leon Schiller poszedł śladami Wyspiańskiego. Stał się czołowym twórcą Wielkiej Reformy Teatru w Europie. Uprawiał reżyserię jako wyod- rębnioną dziedzinę sztuki; stworzył „polski teatr inscenizacji”; zapoczątkował także nauczanie reżyserii jako dziedziny akademickiej. Jego głównym reżyserskim dokona- niem (obok innych widowisk) były inscenizacje polskich dramatów romantycznych, z których mickiewiczowskie Dziady (Lwów 1932, Wilno 1933, Warszawa 1934) były szczytowym osiągnięciem polskiego teatru w XX wieku. Juliusz Osterwa, aktor, reżyser, ROZPRAWY I ARTYKUŁYROZPRAWY organizator życia teatralnego oraz reformator teatru, stworzył teatr Reduta, modelowe laboratorium nowego aktorstwa. Rozwinął i ugruntował psychologiczny i realistyczny nurt w polskim aktorstwie. Propagował polską dramaturgię współczesną (m.in. prapre- miery sztuk Szaniawskiego, Żeromskiego, Rittnera) i poetycki teatr wspólnoty aktorów i widzów (Wyzwolenie jako dialog Konrada z widzami, misteryjny Książę niezłomny, przedstawienia podziemne i projekty z czasu II wojny światowej). Włączył swe prace w specyficznie polską tradycję „teatru służby” – służby narodowi i służby Bogu. -

- 1 - Lecture 6: From the Enlightenment to Romanticism. Polish Literature between 1750 and the middle of the Nineteenth Century 1. Introduction To understand the evolution of Polish life since 1750 it is crucial to have a good knowledge of Polish literature. For much of this period, Poland was under foreign domination. Literature became the embodiment of the national idea and the way that ideas about how a free Poland should be organized were expressed. The best single account of this issue is to be found in the standard account by the Nobel prize-winning poet, Czesław Miłosz, A History of Polish Literature, London, 1969. What I want to do today is briefly to analyze the literature of the Polish Enlightenment and then to examine how the rationalist ideals of the ‘Age of Reason’ were supplanted in Poland by an extreme version of European romanticism, which, as I explained in my introductory lecture, became the dominant intellectual force shaping the Polish mentality in the nineteenth and early twentieth century. Many of the works I discuss are available in English translations. II. The Literature of the Polish Enlightenment There is no space here to give a complete picture of the literature of the Polish Enlightenment, which transformed both the Polish language and the nature of Polish - 2 - literature and without which the events of the period between 1764 and 1795 are incomprehensible. I should like briefly to mention four areas of importance: 1. The theatre 2. Prose writing 3. Poetry 4. Political reformers – the ‘Forge’ (Kuźnica) group 1. The Theatre Theatre was widely used to advance the goals of the Camp of Reform. -
