TUESDAY, DECEMBER 10, 2019 PRESENTED BY BENEFITTING THE THE LEGACY OF JOHN FRANKLIN BROYLES Frank Broyles always said he lived a “charmed life,” and it was true. He leaves behind a multitude of legacies certain never to be replicated. Whether it was his unparalleled career in college athletics as an athlete, coach, athletic administrator and broadcaster, or his Broyles, SEC 1944 Player of the Year, handled all the passing (left) and punting (right) from his tailback spot playing for Georgia Tech under legendary Coach tireless work in the fourth quarter of his life Bobby Dodd as an Alzheimer’s advocate, his passion was always the catalyst for changing the world around him for the better, delivered with a smooth Southern drawl. He felt he was blessed to work for more than 55 years in the only job he ever wanted, first as head football coach and then as athletic director at the University of Arkansas. • Are You Ready for Some Super-Senior Football?
Oldest living players Are you ready for some super-senior football? Starting East team quarterback Ace Parker (Information was current as of May 2013 when article appeared in Sports Collectors Digest magazine) By George Vrechek Can you imagine a tackle football game featuring the oldest living NFL players with some of the guys in their 90s? Well to tell the truth, I can’t really imagine it either. However that doesn’t stop me from fantasizing about the possibility of a super-senior all-star game featuring players who appeared on football cards. After SCD featured my articles earlier this year about the (remote) possibility of a game involving the oldest living baseball players, you knew it wouldn’t be long before you read about the possibility of a super-senior football game. Old-timers have been coming back to baseball parks for years to make cameo appearances. Walter Johnson pitched against Babe Ruth long after both had retired. My earlier articles proposed the possibility of getting the oldest baseball players (ranging in age from 88 to 101) back for one more game. While not very likely, it is at least conceivable. Getting the oldest old-timers back for a game of tackle football, on the other hand, isn’t very likely. We can probably think about a touch game, but the players would properly insist that touch is not the same game. If the game were played as touch football, the plethora of linemen would have to entertain one another, while the players in the skill positions got to run around and get all the attention, sort of like it is now in the NFL, except the linemen are knocking themselves silly.

UNITED STATES NAVAL ACADEMY UNITEDSecretary of the Navy STATES George Bancroft laid NAVAL the founda- ACADEMY tion for the Naval Academy when, in 1845, he established the Naval School at Fort Severn in Annapolis. Commander Franklin Buchanan served as the first Superintendent. His fac- ulty consisted of four officers and three civilian professors. There were 50 students. Initially, the academic and professional instruction required five yearsthe first and last at Annapolis, with the intervening three at sea. In 1850, the Naval School became the United States Naval Academy. The following year, the Academy adopted its current course of instruction which includes four consecutive years at Annapolis, with at-sea training provided during the summers. The Naval Academy moved to Newport, R.I., during the Civil War. In 1865, it was re-established at Annapolis under the leadership of Vice Admiral David Dixon Porter. During these early years, the Academy was one of the few institutions of high- er learning offering a sophisticated undergraduate course in tech- nical education. The late 19th century saw immense changes in naval tech- nology with the conversion from sail-powered, wooden ships to steam-powered vessels of steel, which also resulted in rapid developments in naval weaponry and tactics. With the Spanish- American War in 1898, the United States became a world naval power, and early Naval Academy graduates like George Dewey and Alfred Thayer Mahan made significant contributions to our national heritage. The new century saw the nations undergraduate naval college grow in size and academic prowess. The Class of 1895 had pro- duced 41 graduates.
