It combines an extensive engagement with the music of the Grateful Dead, as well as other related musicians, along with a wide variety of readings from non- musical history, political science, philosophy and cultural studies in order to encourage a deep reflection on what the countercultures of the 1960s meant in their heyday, and what their descendants continue to mean today in both musical and non-musical realms. It aims to be both an introduction to those interested in the Grateful Dead, though largely born after the group’s disbandment in 1995, as well as to appeal to those with a broader interest in recent cultural history. Because the University of California – Santa Cruz is the home of the Grateful Dead Archive, students are encouraged to make use of it. However, given the number of students in the course and limitations of UCSC Special Collections its use will not be required. Readings All texts will be available through UCSC’s online system.

    Shakedown Street by Jürgen Fauth Quentin Pfeiffer took a deep breath, opened the car door, and stepped onto Shakedown Street for the first time in five years. The baking-hot blacktop of the Jones Beach parking lot was stretching out all around them, and even though you couldn't see the ocean from here, the flat expanse had a windswept feel to it, only punctuated by a few red stone buildings, the water tower, and the double shell of the amphitheater that hunched a little further inland, on the edge of the bay. Tonight's incarnation of the traveling bazaar that followed the band around the country, named for the bouncy 70s Grateful Dead song, had sprung up halfway between their car and the stage. Once upon a time, Quentin would've been delighted at the sight, but tonight he was just going through the motions. His heart wasn't quite in it — after all, he'd been working hard on getting his heart out of it. Ever since Phish had broken up five years earlier after a disastrous "final" concert in Coventry, Vermont, he'd been trying his damnedest to get over his obsession with the band. He'd been done with the entire scene, and he'd made his peace with it. He'd gotten married. Phish was done and he was done with Phish. Everybody had moved on. But then, the announcement came: the band would play three shows in Hampton, Virginia — on a weekend that just happened to coincide with Quentin's wife's due date.

    Introduction In their thirty years together, the Grateful Dead forever altered the way in which popular music is performed, recorded, heard, marketed, and shared. Founding members Jerry Garcia, Bill Kreutzmann, Phil Lesh, Ron “Pigpen” McKernan, and Bob Weir took the name Grateful Dead in 1965, after incarnations as Mother McCree’s Uptown Jug Champions and The Warlocks. Despite significant changes in the band’s lineup, including the addition of Mickey Hart and the death of Ron McKernan, the band played together until Jerry Garcia’s death in 1995. From the beginning, the Grateful Dead distinguished themselves by their preference for live performance, musical and business creativity, and an unprecedented dedication to their fans. Working musicians rather than rock stars, the Dead developed a distinctive sound while performing as latter-day American troubadours, bringing audio precision to their live performances and the spontaneity of live performances to their studio work. Side-stepping the established rules of the recording industry, the Dead took control of the production and distribution of their music. With a similar business savvy, they introduced strategic marketing innovations that strengthened the bond with their fans. This exhibition, the first extensive presentation of materials from the Grateful Dead Archive housed at the University of California, Santa Cruz, testifies to the enduring impact of the Grateful Dead and provides a glimpse into the social upheavals and awakenings of the late twentieth century—a transformative period that profoundly shaped our present cultural landscape. This specific case study was researched and written by Nancy L. Maron, Program Director, Ithaka S+R. ABSTRACT Few archives come with a built-in fanbase. The Grateful Dead Archive Online (GDAO) is distinguished from many other academic special collections by the variety of media it holds, from concert tickets to audio files and art created by fans of the band, and by its potential audience, the many thousands of fans of the Grateful Dead. Support for the Archive has come from grant funding, private donors, and from this fan base, which poses one of the project’s fascinating opportunities and challenges. How can the GDAO benefit from the enormous potential audience of devoted fans, and from the material they could contribute, while still remaining true to its academic home at the University Library of the University of California at Santa Cruz? INTRODUCTION Some archives may have devoted researchers who use them, but few have true fans. The Grateful Dead Archive (GDA), housed at the University of California at Santa Cruz (UCSC), is a real exception in several ways. The focus of the archive—the live music and touring of the Grateful Dead, the jam band fronted by Jerry Garcia—is part of fairly recent cultural memory.

    Blues for Allah Ahmede Hussain 1 Shormi woke up from a long nap by the sound of a cat screeching. The rain had just stopped and the curtains were tightly pulled. Bright sunlight that fell on the mirror gave her face a raffish charm. There was a small photo-frame on the bedside table. She looked much younger in black and white, helping a toddler walk. The boy was holding a toy gun and was staring at the camera with a menacing look. Both of them looked forlorn, like the ice creams they consumed years ago on a holiday-trip to Cox’s Ba- zaar – long lost and forgotten. The cat crawled in and sat at the windowpane; its shadow fell on the Persian carpet and grew bigger as it walked past the room. Shormi got up to her feet, staggered down the room to pick up the cell. She was wearing a dainty yellow sarong and a white T-shirt; and there was something about her uncertain manner, as well as her clothes, that suggested a moth. The cat was gone when she returned: it started raining again. Shormi smiled approvingly as she looked through the window – she expected it to rain. It had been raining heavily too when she and Iftekhar got married fif- teen years ago. On their way home, the windshield was so blurry that the chauffeur could hardly see anything on the street. But now it was only drizzling outside and there wasn’t any cloud in sight; it should stop soon. She turned the cell off and lay down with only COLLOQUY text theory critique 11 (2006).
