FLYERS VS. BRUINS This is the third and final meeting between the teams this season. The Flyers are trying to beat the Bruins in consecutive games for the first time since the 2015-16 season; it would be just the third such occasion since 2010.

SEASON SERIES Thursday, October 25, 2018 – Boston 3, Flyers 0 at TD Garden: Jaroslav Halak denied 26 Flyers shots to anchor Boston’s 3-0 win. The game was scoreless through 33 minutes of play, thanks largely to several outstanding saves by Halak, before Zdeno Chara fired a shot that deflected in off a stick with seven minutes left in the second period. Then with about 3 ½ minutes to play, Jake DeBrusk deflected home a power play goal to give the Bruins the 2-0 lead. Chara added an empty netter later. Brian Elliott faced 25 shots on goal and stopped 23 of them. Stars of the Game: 1 – Jaroslav Halak; 2 – Zdeno Chara; 3 – Brandon Carlo.

Wednesday, January 15, 2019 – Flyers 4, Boston 3 at Wells Fargo Center: The Flyers used a hat trick to rebound from a two-goal deficit for the second consecutive game, this time taking a 4-3 decision over the Bruins. David Pastrnak and Peter Cehlarik combined to give Boston a 2-0 lead before the game was 10 minutes old, but Oskar Lindblom got one of those goals back with 7:16 left in the first period. Sean Couturier then scored the next three goals of the game, picking up a pair 1:15 apart in the second period and then completing the hat trick with 4:07 left in the third. Cehlarik scored another one with 1:06 left in the contest, but nothing else got by Carter Hart, who made 39 saves on the night. Jaroslav Halak turned away 15 for the Bruins. Stars of the Game: 1 – Sean Couturier; 2 – Carter Hart; 3 – Peter Cehlarik.

NOTES OF THE NIGHT

After playing their first 48 games of the season over the span of 115 days, the Flyers will play their final 34 games over the span of just 76 days in a time period that began with Monday’s return from the bye week. They’ll return home from this road trip to find eight of their next 11 contests at home beginning with Saturday’s game against Edmonton, including the Stadium Series game on February 23.

The Flyers continue to operate as the NHL’s best faceoff team with a 56.3 percent rating. The Flyers have three players above 57 percent on the season:

Claude Giroux – 59.6 pct Scott Laughton – 58.8 pct Sean Couturier – 57.9 pct

Among 121 players that have taken 300 or more faceoffs this year, Giroux leads the league, Laughton is fourth and Couturier is sixth. ] The Flyers’ best faceoff season in the 20 seasons since the NHL started tracking the stat was in 1998-99, when they were 55.4 percent on draws as a team. The best team faceoff percentage for an entire campaign was Boston’s 2012-13 season, when they were 56.4 percent in the 48-game shortened season; the best full 82-game season percentage was Carolina’s 2001-02 team, which was 56.1 percent.

The Flyers’ penalty kill has operated at 83.3 percent over the last 28 games (70 for 84). In that timeframe, which is since Thanksgiving, the PK ranks 10th in the NHL. That comes after the PK went 68.5 percent (50 for 73) on the PK in the first 21 games of the season.

Since the start of this winning streak, the Flyers are tied with San Jose for the league lead with 20 goals in the timeframe. They’ve given up 185 shots, which is fourth-most in that time, despite having given up the 10th-fewest shots in the league this season prior to this streak.

James van Riemsdyk comes into tonight’s contest with six goals and two assists for eight points in his last five games. He’s scored those six goals on just 13 shots. Prior to this he had just eight goals on 61 shots in nine total games. He’s one of just 10 players in the NHL to have five goals or more since January 14.

Carter Hart’s arrival to the NHL has made him the only goaltender in Flyers history to play more than two games for the team before his 21st birthday. His debut made him the second-youngest goaltender in Flyers history to appear in a game, doing so on Dec. 18 vs. DET at the age of 20 years, 127 days. Only Maxime Ouellet was younger (19 years, 112 days). Hart is the youngest goalie in Flyers history to win a game and was the fifth-youngest in the NHL since 1996-97 to win his debut. He is also the first goalie in NHL history and the first Flyer at any position to wear #79. Should Hart record a shutout sometime in the next 1 ½ years, he will become the youngest Flyer ever to do so. Dominic Roussel currently holds the record at 22 years, five days of age when he made 20 saves in a 3- 0 win at Calgary on February 27, 1992.

Claude Giroux represented the Flyers at the All Star game, posting a goal and an assist over the two games as the Metropolitan Division won the event for the second time in the last three years. It’s the sixth All-Star nod of his career, making him the first Flyer to do so since Eric Lindros was selected for the Eastern Conference squad in 2000. The Flyers’ franchise record belongs to Bobby Clarke, who was named to 10 mid-season NHL All-Star teams and appeared in nine of those games.

Giroux became just the second player in team history to hit 500 assists when he set up the Flyers’ first goal on Jan. 16 vs. Boston. He had already moved into second place all-time in assists and fourth place all-time in points, reaching both earlier this season.
