Asian Games 2018 Witnesses Match Its Earlier Best with 15 Gold! - GK Notes in PDF

India's performance in the 2018 was remarkable as it matched its earlier best medal tally. The last time India won 15 gold medals was in the inaugural edition in New , 1951. India finished at 8th position at Asian Games 2018 with 15 Gold, 24 Silver and 30 Bronze Medals. Indian women’s hockey team captain was India’s flag-bearer for the closing ceremony at the Asian Games 2018. India bagged most gold in Athletics. Jinson Johnson subsequently became the first Indian in 56 years to win Men's 1500m event at the Asian Games, following Mohinder Singh's gold at the 1962 Games. India's Arpinder Singh becomes the first Indian to win gold in men's triple jump in 48 years. It was Double delight for India as Manjit Singh and Jinson Jhonson won Gold and Silver respectively in Men's 800m race. India's Ace Javelin Thrower Neeraj Chopra bagged Gold comfortably by breaking his own National record in Asian Games 2018. India shuttler PV Sindhu bagged Silver after going down in finals, while settled for Bronze. Sindhu also created history as she is the 1st Indian to reach Badminton Women's Finals in Asian Games. Rohan Bopanna and Sharan Divij clinched gold at Men's Doubles in Tennis. While Men's Rowing team claimed Gold in Quadruple Sculls event. Earlier, Rahi Sarnobat became the India's 1st women shooter to win Gold at Asian Games 2018. This year's Asian Games was hosted in and , Indonesia. Quick Facts about the Asian Games 2018

 The Asian Games is a multi-disciplinary sports event held every four years where athletes from all Asian countries can participate..  The Asian Games first began in 1951 in , India.  While generally the Asian Games are held only in one city, the Asian Games 2018 will see events happening in Indonesian capital Jakarta and the country’s oldest city, Palembang.  The opening and closing ceremonies of the 18th Asian Games will be held at the Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium in Jakarta.  The 18th Asian Games will witness athletes from 45 countries competing in 465 events approx.  Jakarta will host most of the events but sports like shooting and tennis will be played in Palembang.  Indonesia is hosting the Asian Games for the 2nd time after the Jakarta Asian Games in 1962.  The Asian Games are organised every four years by the Olympic Council of Asia, the 2nd largest multi-sport event next to the in the world.

India and Asian Games

 The India's contingent at the Asian Games 2018 will have 572 athletes - 312 men and 260 women competing across 36 events.  Young javelin-thrower Neeraj Chopra carried India’s flag and led the contingent at the Asian Games 2018.  India’s best performance at the Asia Games was in 2010, where India won 65 medals, including 14 golds.  There are many Indian athletes who are being considered strong medal contenders for the 18th Asian Games. Let us take a look at them:

o Hockey - Defending champion India will look to once again bring home the gold in the men’s category while the women’s team will look to better their bronze-medal performance from to finish with the yellow metal.

o Wrestling - Bajrang Punia, and are being considered strong medal contenders for India.

o Badminton - P V Sindhu, Sania Nehwal, and K Shrikant have shown commendable performances in the past few months and have a good chance of winning medals for the country.

o Shooting - No Indian shooter has shown more promise than the school-going 16-year-old, Manu Bhaker. She also shot down the gold at the CWG and will be a strong contender in the 10m air pistol event in the Asian Games 2018.

o Tennis - Rohan Bopanna will be a contender along with very impressive Divij Sharan in men’s doubles. In the absence of top singles player Yuki Bhambri, the Chennai-player, Ramkumar Ramanathan will carry India’s hopes.

o Boxing - Vikas Krishan will be India’s strongest contender for a medal in Jakarta. Shiva Thapa has a good record at the Asian Championships to draw confidence from, having claimed three successive medals. Sonia Lather will lead a three-member Indian women’s team in the absence of MC , who pulled out to focus on the World Championship. Sonia will compete in the 57kg.

o Kabaddi - India are the defending champions of the gold medal in men’s and women’s kabaddi event at the Asian Games and are expected to win Gold this year too.

o Gymnastics - is tipped to be India’s best medal bet in Jakarta.

o Table Tennis - The Delhi-player, is expected to give a strong fight to her rivals at the Asian Games 2018.

o Hima Das for athletics, Neeraj Chopra for , Seema Punia for discus throw and Dutee Chand for sprints - all pose high chances of winning medals in their respective disciplines.

Apart from the above mentioned disciplines, in the Asian Games 2018 unusual events like bridge, pencak silat and kurash will also see Indian athletes compete. Let’s hope Indian athletes beat their own best performance in 2010 and secure India in Top Rank in Asian Games 2018.
