Cast for Yeomen of the Guard Princeton Society of Musical Amateurs Yeoman of the Guard – January 13, 2018 LEE F. MILHOUS (Conductor) is a summa cum laude graduate of Westminster Choir College, Princeton, having received a Bachelor of Music degree in Church Music, and holds a Master of Music degree in Choral Conducting from Temple’s Esther Boyer College of Music. His teachers included Michael Stairs, Robert Carwithen and Alan Harler. Lee has served as Music Director for Bucks G&S for six seasons. He is Organist and Choirmaster at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church (Burlington, NJ) and manages their Music Series featuring concerts and Evensongs as well as performances of The Bravo Brass ensemble of the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra. He served a similar capacity at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Doylestown, for 20 years. Lee has conducted liturgical and concert performances of Handel’s Messiah and Coronation Anthems, Bach’s St. John Passion, Magnificat and Easter Oratorio; Haydn’s Lord Nelson Mass and St. Nicolai Mass; Brahms’ Liebeslieder Waltzes, and Requiems by Fauré, Mozart and Duruflé, among others. He is currently Choir Director and Accompanist at Temple Hillel/Beth El (Wynnewood), Director of Music at St. Ignatius Parish (Yardley), Organist for The Evergreens Episcopal Chapel (Moorestown), Associate Organist at St. Martin of Tours Parish (New Hope), and Accompanist for the Valley Forge Chorale, all Lenape Middle School (Doylestown), Richboro Middle School, and Welch Elementary School (Richboro) choirs. His musical theater credits include over 45 productions as Music Director, Conductor, or Accompanist with Bristol Riverside Theater, Bucks County Playhouse, Town and Country Players, Hatboro-Horsham High School, Peddie School, Solebury School, and numerous church and synagogue theatre groups. Lee proudly plays in recital through Cunningham Piano and Organ promoting the new Rogers Infinity series and Johannus organs, and in 1992 performed a solo at Carnegie Hall as part of an Opera Orchestra of NY production of Richard Wagner’s Rienzi. He resides in Doylestown, PA with his sons Elliot and Christopher, their Maine Coon cat Phin, and a rescue turtle named Bill. Princeton Society of Musical Amateurs Yeoman of the Guard – January 13, 2018 MICHAEL DUTKA (Sir Richard Cholmondeley) Michael is delighted to return to Bucks County G&S after singing the role of The Mikado with them in 2016, and Arac in Princess Ida the year before. Other past roles include Dick Deadeye in H.M.S. Pinafore, The Usher in Trial by Jury and Sergeant Meryll in Yeomen with the Savoy Company, Roderick in Ruddigore with the G&S Society of Chester County, the Sergeant of Police in Pirates with the Rose Valley Chorus and Orchestra and Private Willis in Iolanthe and Jupiter in Thespis with Thespis, Etc. Michael is a recent transplant from Doylestown to Kintnersville, PA. DEREK HESS (Colonel Fairfax) Derek is happy to return to Bucks County Gilbert & Sullivan Society to take on a new role from his favorite G&S show. Derek has been in several Gilbert & Sullivan productions including the roles of Samuel in The Pirates of Penzance, Strephon in Iolanthe, Dr. Daly in The Sorcerer, Ralph Rackstraw in H.M.S. Pinafore, Archibald Grosvenor in Patience, Jack Point in Yeomen of the Guard, Florian in Princess Ida, Robin Oakapple in Ruddigore, and most recently seen as Edwin the Defendant in both BCGSS’s and The Gilbert and Sullivan Society of Chester County’s production of Trial By Jury. DAVID SWARTZ (Sergeant Meryll) After a bombastic romp last season as the Honorable Judge in Trial By Jury, Dave returns to portray a somewhat less than over-the-top Sergeant Meryll. He has performed G&S with the Philadelphia Savoy Company and Rose Valley Chorus and Orchestra, and has acted and directed with many area theater companies over an extended career. He is fortunate (or, perhaps not so fortunate) to play his Meryll opposite a very familiar Dame Carruthers, his lovely wife, Theresa Forsyth Swartz – and shall no doubt come to regret the above parenthetical lampoon. CHRIS CAPITOLO (Leonard Meryll) is happy to be making his BCGSS debut after seeing how much fun his wife Abby had last year. Other G&S credits include Lord Mountararat in Iolanthe, Major General Stanley in The Pirates of Penzance, and the solicitor in Patience with Rose Valley Chorus and Orchestra. He and Abby live in Abington, PA with their two cats, whom they love more than is appropriate. GABRIEL NATHAN (Jack Point) Gabe began his G&S odyssey in 2004 as a Tower Warder in Yeomen of the Guard (GSSCC). At 6 foot tall, he was the shortest protector of the Tower of London in that particular production. He is delighted to still be 6 foot tall, and to be coming full circle, appearing once again in Yeomen, hoping to do justice to Jack Point. Gabe has played comic baritone leads in Patience (Thespis, Etc.), HMS Pinafore (Ardensingers & GSSCC), The Sorcerer (Thespis, Etc.), Ruddigore (RVC&O & GSSCC), Pirates of Penzance (GSSCC), Iolanthe (GSSCC), Princess Ida (Bucks) and The Mikado (GSSCC). Surprisingly, after all that, he doesn't drink. BOB BINKLEY (Wilfred Shadbolt) This will be a return for Bob to his favorite role in G&S, the lovesick jailer. "I'm so pleased with this wonderful cast. After ten years, it still amazes me how lucky we are to have such talented people, both on- and off-stage, willing to tell these stories!" Bob has been a part of all ten Bucks seasons, and hopes to be around for another ten or so. Congrats to Bob Kinney in his first major direction. And thanks to Winnie for putting up with all this silliness. BOB KINNEY (First Yeomen/Director) was thrilled to be direct this dynamic production in June. Bob made his G&S directorial debut in 2017, directing and starring as Mr. Cox in Cox and Box. Bob has performed as a lead or chorus member in all of the Bucks G&S productions, beginning with Trial by Jury in 2009. He has performed as Pish Tush in Mikado twice, as Samuel in Pirates of Penzance, as an able seamen in H.M.S. Pinafore, a tower guard in Princess Ida and a Royal Dragoon in Patience. Bob also performed in Ruddigore when his hair was much darker. Bob sang the part of “Second Yeoman” in the Chester County G&S production of Yeomen of the Guard in 2016, where his admiration for this emotional show was truly kindled. He is grateful to the wonderful cast, production crew, and friends for their support of this grand operetta. Princeton Society of Musical Amateurs Yeoman of the Guard – January 13, 2018 GEORGE ACHILLES (Second Yeoman) returns for his eighth show with BCGSS, having played Major-General Stanley in Pirates of Penzance, Sir Joseph Porter, KCB, in H.M.S. Pinafore, the Duke in Patience and in the chorus of Princess Ida and The Mikado. Showing his versatility, George also sang with Spencer Productions’ Saddle Up for Murder as Larry, the moose head on a saloon wall. He sang for his fourth season with Cantus Novus and sings regularly with the St. Paul’s Episcopal Church Choir, as a cantor at OLMC, Doylestown, and at church weddings. ALLISON DERATZIAN (Elsie Maynard) returns to BCGSS after a several year hiatus, having previously appeared in Princess Ida (Melissa) and Patience (Lady Saphir). Other G&S roles have included Phoebe in Yeomen (G&S Society of Chester County) and Zorah in Ruddigore (Thespis, Etc.). A self-proclaimed “itinerant conjurer,” she is frequently seen onstage with various theater groups in the greater Philadelphia area. Favorite credits include Sweeny Todd (Beggar Woman); Assassins (“Squeaky” Fromme); The Roar of the Greasepaint…(The Kid); ‘night, Mother (Jessie); A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Titania); and Twelfth Night (Feste) ABBY CAPITOLO (Phoebe Meryll) Abby is excited to be back for her second show with BCGSS. Former credits include last year's Trial By Jury (Angelina), Rose Valley Chorus and Orchestra's productions of Pirates of Penzance (Kate), The Gondoliers (Fiametta), and Iolanthe (Celia). Abby studied voice at Malone University in Ohio while getting her degree in zoo and wildlife biology. She is a vet tech at Madden Animal Hospital in Ambler and resides with her husband and cats in Abington. THERESA SWARTZ (Dame Carruthers) is delighted to be back with us singing the role of Dame Carruthers. Other productions with BCGSS include The Mikado and HMS Pinafore. She has performed many singing and non-singing roles throughout the area. Her favorites are Katisha in The Mikado, Guenevere in Camelot, Regina Giddens in The Little Foxes, and Elsie Maynard in The Yeomen of the Guard. ELISE GENZLINGER (Kate) is thrilled to be back with BCGSS for the first time since playing Edith in Pirates of Penzance in 2012. Other G&S forays have included Constance in The Sorcerer, and Princess Ida in Princess Ida. She has also worked behind the scenes as the costumer for a production of Pirates of Penzance and as the co-director and producer of a production of the Broadway musical The Secret Garden. When not scheming about plays and making music, Elise works two jobs and runs a household with two dogs, four children, and eight chickens. YOU! (Robust Ensemble of Yeomen and Townspeople). Come sing with us! .

  • Stompin' on the Savoy? in Madison, Wisconsin in 2015, Gilbert
Stompin’ on the Savoy? In Madison, Wisconsin in 2015, Gilbert & Sullivan’s The Mikado was staged with the look of Japanese anime. The same year, in a Gananoque, Ontario staging of The Pirates of Penzance set in the 1920s, the song “Poor Wand’ring One” segued into “Makin’ Whoopee.” Such nontraditional incarnations of G & S works are hardly isolated incidents. Just as theatre companies have looked for novel concepts for Shakespearean productions, so they’ve sought new approaches for the Savoy operas. Yeomen of the Guard director Sean Graney’s innovative takes for The Hypocrites company in Chicago are among the most striking recent examples, but such experimentation has been going on for a long time. But not always—not in Great Britain, anyway. From 1875 until 1961, the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company maintained a strict monopoly on professional U.K. productions of the operas. Amateurs were obligated to receive permission from D’Oyly Carte for their versions—agreeing to pay the company a royalty and to follow sanctioned scripts and scores to the letter. Things were different in America, where, according to writer Ian Bradley, a cross- dressing rendition of H.M.S. Pinafore appeared as early as 1888. In 1939, two updates of The Mikado, both with African-American casts, were staged in New York City: The Hot Mikado and The Swing Mikado. In the same year, the Labor Stage mounted The Red Mikado. Later years saw The Cool Mikado (a film), The Mod Mikado (set in a topless bar) and The Incommunicado Mikado (a spoof on the Watergate scandal).

THE GILBERT AND SULLIVAN OPERETTAS ON 78s: COMPLETE SETS AND ABRIDGEMENTS, 1906. 1950 John W. N. Francis In 1877 Richard D'Oyly Carte commissioned Gilbert and Sullivan to write The Sorcerer, and organized an ensemble of singer-actors to perform the new piece under the author's artistic direction. Also in 1877, of course, Charles Cros and Thomas Edison invented sound recording. More than a century later both the music and the medium continue to flourish, and indeed they have come together often and success fully--notably in the many complete versions by the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company, which have set standards of style and ensemble for generations of devotees and amateur performers. This discography documents the complete recordings of the Gilbert and Sullivan operettas made at 78 rpm, not only by the D'Oyly Carte company or under its aegis, but also by others with lesser claims to authenticity. Also included are substantial abridgements and sets of excerpts--groups of five or more sides made at essentially the same time and place and with the same performers, whether or not they were ever issued collectively or with consecutive numbering. The following comments set the recordings in the context of the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company's history. THE ACOUSTIC RECORDINGS When Richard D'Oyly Carte died in 1901, his widow Helen assumed manage ment of the businesses he had built, including the Savoy Theatre in London and the opera company, which was then on tour. In 1906 she brought the troupe back to the Savoy for a repertory season of Gilbert and Sullivan, its very first.
