September 2012 Take The Opportunity Well winter sports has finished in our household. No more hockey, netball Contents or AFL. That means no more busy weekends and finally gave me the Take The Opportunity ...... 1 opportunity to attend a Cub camp with Nathan. There is no denying it, Trivia Night Fundraiser ...... 2 Cub camps ARE a lot of work. There is a lot of time spent in the kitchen preparing meals and you’re always asked to help with something. But Patrol Boxes ...... 2 they are a lot of fun. You get to see your child interact within the group, Trivia Night! ...... 3 which is great to watch, and you get to meet other interesting parents. Region Commissioners Dinner Address You can also go home knowing you helped provide a wonderful – NYC ...... 4 experience for your child. Joeys HOP ...... 5 I know the leaders definitely appreciate the help they receive as it makes their job much easier. So if you have the chance to help on a Monday Cubs ...... 6 Joey or Cub camp, I would strongly recommend it. Take the opportunity ...... 6 before they reach and don’t want your help anymore! Tuesday Cubs ...... 7 On this last camp, Luke came along to help out. His help was greatly Wednesday Scouts ...... 8 appreciated by Raksha. He spent some time with the older Cubs talking Thursday Scouts ...... 9 to them about Scouts and what they could expect. He was asked lots of questions and the Cubs are keen to start their Scouts adventure. You can Camp ...... 10 really see how well the age-based sections within Scouts work, the sense Badges/Achievements ...... 11 of anticipation it builds and pleasure the kids get by moving up.

Upcoming Events ...... 12 The Trivia Night fundraiser was a great success. We raised $1114! More Contacts ...... 12 importantly, it was just a great social night. It was good to see everyone having fun and a laugh.

It’s great to see a number of parents stepping up to become assistant

leaders and parent helpers in White Wolf Pack. With Raksha and Yabbie going up to scouts at the end of Term 4, it’s important to have people prepared to take over the section. I know Raksha is keen to assist these new leaders and to see the section prosper.

Trivia Night Fundraiser

The Trivia Night was a great success. We didn’t sell as many tickets as I was initially hoping for (more people go away for school holidays than I thought!). However, we finished up with 49 people and had a great night. The den was decorated and looked a treat. I was very pleasantly surprised when I turned up at the den early Saturday evening to finish off preparations to find a number of people already there with their tables

set up with lots of wonderful food.

There were ten rounds of questions. Some hard, some easy. The music round was very popular but no one was able to identify them all!

The bottle of 12yo Glenfiddich was a very popular prize in the coin-toss game. I am sure some people could have bought a bottle themselves but it made for a good, rowdy bit of fun.

The Eight Heads were the night’s run away winners. For their efforts they received a bottle of wine and a small bag of goodies.

We received many wonderful prizes to give away on the night. Thanks go to the following companies and families:

 Cosmetics Fragrance Direct (http://cfdirect.com.au)  Burleigh SLSC

 Avon – Sharon Duncan 0412 647 855  Gold Coast Tennis Coaching – Rowan Hollond  Tallai Hair & Beauty

 Stocklands Burleigh Heads  Alan Goodwin  Rose Way - Ezy-Way  Eggleton Family

A big thank you to everyone who attended and made the night a great success. We raised $1114 which was a pretty awesome result!

While having a parents only night was great fun, there were a number of kids disappointed they couldn’t attend. Next term we plan to organise an evening with a more family friendly format. We hope to raise some

funds but it will primarily be about having a good family night. Stay tuned for details.

Patrol Boxes Wednesday night scouts received three new patrol boxes purchased with the $150 Bunnings gift vouchers reported in the last newsletter. The scouts were excited to receive them and wanted to know when they were going camping. In future weeks they will work out how they want to fill them and get themselves ready for some serious camping activities!

Region Commissioners Dinner Address – NYC As the current Queensland Branch Appointment to the National Youth Council (NYC), I was recently called on to deliver a short presentation at the Region Commissioners Dinner on 15 September regarding my experiences on the NYC. All of Queensland’s NYC members were in attendance and the function offered an ideal opportunity to answer an important question: namely, what is the NYC?

For those who are unaware, the NYC is comprised of 25 youth members in the Scout, Venturer and Rover sections from all around Australia, who are selected on an annual basis for a maximum term of three years. The primary purpose of the NYC is to formulate recommendations, from a youth perspective, to the National Team or National Operations Committee on discussion topics put forward by members of these committees or other members of Scouts Australia. NYC members are placed in patrols of 5-6 with elected patrol leaders, chair and vice-chair, who form the NYC executive. NYC members who are Branch Appointments have the additional role of communicating the council’s activities and intentions to their Branch and vice-versa. I have held the position of Queensland Branch Appointment since March 2011. The four other Queensland NYC members are Harley Miles, Simon McMahon, Xanthia Dubler and Zoe Beikoff-Bray.

In my time on the NYC, I have helped complete a range of patrol discussion topics, including a review of youth- perceived exciting activities, an evaluation of Venturer participation in national Jamborees and a cross-section award scheme review. Other topics for which recommendations have been devised in 2011 and 2012 are the design of the Jamboree Patrol Leader Booklet, the design of a Scouts iPhone App and the feasibility of an Australian Outstanding Scout Award, similar to the Asia-Pacific Regional award.

Please let me know of any issues or ideas regarding that could be addressed by the NYC, as we are always on the lookout for more discussion topics. Alternatively, to submit a topic for discussion, the NYC executive can be contacted via email to [email protected]. Further information regarding the council is available on the NYC page on the Scouts Australia national website, the link for which can be found under the National Youth Program menu item.

My experience on the NYC has been extremely rewarding and empowering. The opportunities for growth in the skills of leadership, team management and logical analysis have been of great benefit and, combined with the unique experiences offered to NYC members, enriched my Scouting journey immeasurably.

Joeys HOP Burleigh Joeys had some great times with the Nerang Joeys this term with the Billy Cart Rally and Joey Olympics both hosted at the Nerang scout den giving our Joeys an experience of the wider community of Joeys that help make up the region. The billy carts were re-assembled, with some minor improvements and a new coat of paint, all done by the Joeys themselves with some help from parents. These billy carts once again proved highly competitive in both the ‘bush’ and high performance ‘open’ categories allowing the Joeys to triumphantly return the trophy to Burleigh for another year. Individual trophies were also in

great supply with an outstanding performance by Loki with two (2nd & 3rd A finely-tuned racing cart! place) trophies. The racing was enjoyed by onlookers and included some nail biting, hay bailing moments from the daring Joey drivers. Many of our Joeys had never driven a billy cart before, least of all on the hay bale lined downhill course set up outside the Nerang den. Some high speed crashes were inevitable however safety was a priority and all the well padded Joeys finished the day unscathed and ready for the next challenge. As participation is the main goal of the event it didn’t really matter that Nerang didn’t have many Joey drivers (there was one) to race ours but we hope more can make it next year to put up a better challenge for the trophy and have a good time with us.

Canungra camp Other events with Nerang included the Joey Olympics, and Show days which were hosted alternately at Nerang and Burleigh dens. At the Olympics night the Joeys were mixed up and played many outdoor games based on an Olympic theme. The Joeys all received hand made medals for their participation. At the Show day they enjoyed games and craft with a farm-animal theme.

The other big event was the Region Joey Sleepover at Canungra den and camping ground. This event was attended by many Gold Coast region Joey groups, as well as Nerang & Burleigh, and allowed the Joeys to experience camping in a communal tent, a first for many, where all

Having a splash in Canungra Creek the Joeys were in their own tent. Despite a lovely and warm day, allowing the Joeys to wade in the local creek, it was unbelievably cold overnight, noticed particularly by Falcon who, when packing, had grabbed the first sleeping bag in his garage which turned out to be a child’s size coming up only to his shoulders. Luckily the Joeys were up by the crack of dawn at 5.30 am and the sun was warming us all up and we were in shorts and t-shirts again by 7 am. Just in time for a Canadian breakfast of bacon, eggs, and pancakes with maple syrup cooked by the parents (yummy). A big thankyou to our parent helpers that always make a good turnout and help make the event run smoothly. Another thankyou to the Burleigh Venturers who not only loaned us their camping Pirate Day. Arghhh! equipment for the weekend but they also packed it all into their trailer for us to take.

Monday Cubs Term 3 has gone fast again. Baloo was overseas for a month. Baloo went to London and Spain. Baloo went to the Olympics and saw lots of events, Spain was very hot as well.

While Baloo was busy travelling, Nushka & Bagheera been looking after the pack with the help with Magpie. Judy Pomeroy gave the cubs an art lesson and they all created great masterpieces and had heaps of fun. Then we had a reptile expert "furry" bring along a bunch of reptiles and let the cubs interact with all of them including a baby crocodile, it was a great learning experience for the cubs. We attend the Region Billy Cart Race. Well done to Rover’s recruiting. Isaac Batho came first in one of the races.

When Baloo came back from Jetlag, we rode our bikes or scooters along the path to North Burleigh and back to Burleigh. We had hot chips and drink. We did a walk night walk to the headland and we saw a big jellyfish and then we ended up back for some more hot chips and drinks. I would like to thank Banjo’s Dad (Nick Owens) for the food. They have also been discovering the universe on astronomy night, viewing mars and Saturn and learning how the rover curiosity landed on mars and many other fun activities.

Our last night we had a disco; we played lots of game and ate lots of food. Red wolf pack would also like to welcome our newest member Marley to the pack and we look forward to term 4 as we have many more exciting activities planned.

Coming up Events: Under Water World 24th November

Rovers

The ladies looking lovely for the St In the past few months the Rover crew have been working hard to get the Georges Ball. crew up and running. We meet once a week, usually in the scout hall carpark but with the addition of the new Venturer/Rover room we are happy to call that home.

Our past events include bowling, Rock climbing, ice blocking (sliding down hills on giant ice blocks), ice skating, night drops, Venturer nights, Gold Coast Show, Dude Where's My Bash? (a.k.a Banana Bash), St Georges Ball (annual Rover ball), help with the running of the Venture camp - Urban Challenge and designed our own crew shirt.

Future events include fundraising activities, Rover Moot (WA), World Moot (Canada), night fishing, Mt Warning hike, Crew camps, kids party themed night and karaoke night.

At present we only have three active members but hope that our promotional efforts will bring in more members. The three of us are working towards becoming knighted rovers and will then begin work on our Baden- Powell award.

Tuesday Cubs We have had some changes going on the White Wolf Pack this term. Three have started their new challenges in the Scout Section. Ben, Luke and Ewan have settled in well with the Wednesday night Troop. Ben and Luke were formally linked by participating in a linking Ceremony. Both Cubs walked across a suspension bridge that had been constructed by the Scout Section. It was very special and the Cubs were welcomed into the Troop. During this Ceremony we also invested Tas as an assistant Ready for take off! Leader of the White Wolf Pack.

We have five new members this term. Byron, Chad, Dylan, Amelie and Cameron. All five Cubs have been invested into the Cub Pack and have already started the journey into badge work. Cameron has achieved his Codes and Signals Level 1 well done. The other new members have also achieved their flight Level 2 badges.

We have several parent helpers join the Pack. Chris, Amanda, Steven, Amelia, Tristian, Justin and they were initiated into the Camping scene for Air Activities. The Cubs participated in the Air Activities Level 2, each Everyone had a turn. Cub had a flight on a light plane, how cool is that!!!!!! We stayed at the North Ipswich Den and visited the Railworks Museum.

Activities for the term focused on handcraft and construction using differing materials and techniques. All Boomerangs were awarded on the Father's Day night, well done to all the Cubs.

We visited the Heritage Museum in Mudgeeraba, which was awesome. In term two we had a visit from the Bomb Detection Dogs. We had another visit from them and the Cubs presented the retirement award to Buster the Dog. The medal was purchased from the funds raised by the Plenty of excitement Cubs and their families.

See you all next term.

Wednesday Scouts We have had a term of “back to basic’s” scouting with a lot of time spent concentrating on Campcraft and Scoutcraft. This entailed such patrol challenges as setting up a kitchen fly, use of camp tools such as axes and saws, mapping and compass work (thanks to Magpie) First Aid and Emergencies including a visit from an ambulance (thanks to The Place Family and Raksha) and of course campfires and cooking.

Its not all fun! We attended the Region Billy Cart Derby at Nerang, and after an action filled day with thrills and spills, we came home with the trophies. Great Job Scouts

Some of our P.L.’s and A.P.L’s travelled to Guanaba campsite for the Region Leadership camp, and as well as meeting and having fun with a lot of other like-minded scouts, had a great time learning about the patrol system and how our troop should be running. We all look forward to their input in the future. Each of these scouts (Laiken, Stephen, Timothy and Tom) will need to complete a project, which will consist of an overnight patrol camp, so it looks like we will be getting the chance Billy carts come in different sizes. to get some more camping under our belts next term.

Wednesday Scouts Leadership will be growing in the future with Jay (Galah-formerly Kaa) coming on board last term from cubs, and will be joined by both Troy (Yabbie) and Sallie (Quoll – formerly Raksha) moving from cubs to scouts next year. Galah and Quoll have both been busy doing their Scout Skills training over the school holidays, and should be appointed as Scout Leaders early in term 4.

We finished term 3 with a combined Linking Ceremony, which was attended by Cubs, Scouts and Venturers, and it was a great night. Luke Plenty of excitement and Ben crossed the rope bridge to link into scouts, and the Ventures ran games for the cubs and scouts as well as putting on a BBQ for everyone.

Thanks to Group we now have 3 new Patrol boxes to kit out for camping, which we will get straight into next term…What do Scouts need in patrol boxes?? Scouts, bring your ideas along to your P.L’s.

Bring on Term 4!! – Galah.

Time for a rest to discuss tactics

Thursday Scouts This term we had a camp at Epripah working on our World Environment Badge. The camp was delayed by one day due to the bunkhouse being vandalised, the necessary repairs were completed for us to move in on the Saturday. This highlights the need for youth to be a part of a community organisation like scouts. While the scouts who attended still need to complete their projects to earn their badge, it was a fun filled learning and weeding weekend. That’s right they were all weeding and eager to help out at home.

Eprapah is located in the bushland directly behind Victoria Point Scout Group's Den and is home to the Scout Environmental Education and Community Centre. The park surrounds Eprapah Creek and covers 39 hectares of environmentally protected habitat that is home to many species of fauna and flora. Eprapah contains predominantly dense bushland containing rainforest, wetlands and marine habitats, with a freshwater creek and ponds, and a dry Sclerophyl forest, all accessed by trails and boardwalks. Its extremely diverse and varied habitats support a wide range of vegetation, birdlife, koalas and other wildlife.

Fourth term will be exciting as we get into full swing preparing for Jamboree. Just a heads up we are cancelling New Years celebrations this year as we all need to be at Nerang train station on the 1st January at 5:45am to catch the bus for a 6am departure.

It is essential to be on time. The Jamboree site only lets in 5 buses at a time to unload passengers the arrival time is important given the number of arrivals.

We will have a number of Mums and Dads nervous about their Children being away from home for so long. My experience is with activities, entertainment, cooking/cleaning, washing their clothes, and wondering whether it is necessary to shower every day that the scouts are so busy they will be wondering where the time went.

The scouts will have some familiar faces at the Jamboree with myself Rosella and Kaa in troop B61 and Magpie not too far away. If you have any questions about Jamboree please contact me.

Eprapah Camp

Echinda tells me the Joeys have a camp to Eprapah early next term. This is one of Echinda’s favourite camps. Nathan has been there twice and it’s great fun. I wrote this poem after Nathan’s first camp and thought the Joeys might enjoy it as they look forward to their adventure!

Oh, to be a Joey Scout It’s getting late and they've had hot Milo. To find out what real life's about. Now it’s time for quiet and to lie low. Running round under the hot sun And after all goodnights are said, Having lots and lots of fun. It’s off to sleep in double-bunk beds.

To the pond with bucket, scoop and net In the morning, it’s time for breakfast, For watery adventures they won't forget. It seems cereal and toast are best. With dragonflies, shrimps and weed But what is that? A sleeping dad? What else could a Joey Scout need? That’s not good, that's bad, bad, bad!

To all the kids the word was sent All eaten fast, it was quite delicious! To quickly, quietly surround the tent. Then little boys learn to wash their dishes. And, well, what would you do? Teeth are cleaned and beds prepared. The kids yell loudly, 'Wake up, Potoroo!' But of sleep and dreams, no one cared!

But being is not all loud To the welcome glow of the big campfire And of themselves they should be proud. With seats and torches we all retire. At Scout Zone it’s time for reflection For entertainment by the dads And to give thanks for other’s attention. (Like tv without the ads).

And with lots of food for lunch They are a noisy, munching bunch! But I don't know if they were funny, Then it’s time for a long, winding hike. I don’t think I’d pay them money. Learning lots, what's not to like? But luckily Echinda's rump-pa-pa Made for fun at Eprapah!

After the museum, they head back To the bunkhouse for drink and snack. Then after all that silly talk For afternoon craft they make a . It was time for a scary, night walk.

Designs to make your mind just boggle! All lined up in single file, Excited faces aglow with smile.

And oh what a wondrous noise! Like all adventures, there is an end. That sound of loud and boisterous boys! Walking with torches in the dark Back to school and jobs to tend. With balls to throw and games to play They learn to watch and leave no mark. But of one thing there is no doubt, No wonder everybody wants to stay. But noise of boys the animals heard I wish *I* could be a Joey scout! So they only saw spiders and a bird!

But after that loud and noisy mood Hungry boys need LOTS of food. But before we eat, grace is said,

Then its sausages, lasagna, salad and bread!
