MEDIA CLIPS – February 3, 2017 Young arms among Rockies' camp invites Veteran batters Denorfia, Reynolds also on non-roster list By Thomas Harding / MLB.com | @harding_at_mlb | February 2nd, 2017 DENVER -- Two fast-rising pitching prospects, right-hander Ryan Castellani and lefty Sam Howard, will make their first appearances in Major League camp this spring for the Rockies, who announced their non-roster invitees on Thursday. The group includes veterans Chris Denorfia, a right-handed-hitting outfielder, andMark Reynolds, who was the Rockies' primary first baseman last year. In all, the Rockies invited 22 players, including nine pitchers, to bring the total number to 62. Pitchers and catchers will have their first workout on Feb. 14, and the initial full-squad workout is Feb. 20. Castellani, who turns 21 on April 1, is a 2014 second-round pick out of Brophy College Preparatory in Phoenix. He went 7- 8 with a 3.81 ERA and 142 strikeouts in 167 2/3 innings last season at Class A Advanced Modesto against older competition in the California League. Howard, who turns 24 on March 5, was drafted a round after Castellani out of Georgia Southern. Howard went 9-9 with a 3.35 ERA, and fanned 140 in 156 innings. In the latest ranking of top 30 Rockies prospects by MLBPipeline.com, Castellani was No. 12 and Howard was 20th. While non-roster invitations give the Rockies a chance to look at highly touted prospects before the Minor League season, this group also includes players who could help the big squad beginning on Opening Day -- especially pitchers.

  • SF Giants Press Clips Friday, March 17, 2017
SF Giants Press Clips Friday, March 17, 2017 San Francisco Chronicle Giants’ Christian Arroyo: next piece of homegrown infield? John Shea SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — The Giants love shortstops. Theirs is one of the best in baseball, Brandon Crawford. Their second baseman was drafted as a shortstop and converted in the minors, Joe Panik. They drafted Matt Duffy as a shortstop and taught him to play third base as a big-leaguer. Last summer, they traded for Eduardo Nuñez, who had played mostly shortstop during his career but played third after Duffy was traded to Tampa Bay. Heck, even Buster Posey played shortstop in college. No wonder the Giants’ top hitting prospect is a shortstop. Not that Christian Arroyo is targeted to play the position in the big leagues, not with Mr. Crawford in the house. Arroyo, who’s 21 going on 30, is the team’s third baseman of the future, and we’re not talking the distant future. It’s not unrealistic to imagine Arroyo playing third on Opening Day in 2018, so long as he continues to excel on the fast track. 1 “For me, they stressed the value of versatility,” Arroyo said at his Scottsdale Stadium locker. “Staying versatile is going to be huge.” Arroyo was the Giants’ top draft pick in 2013 — he was salutatorian at Hernando High School in Brooksville, Fla. — and he signed after turning down a scholarship from Florida, where he would have studied architectural engineering. He’s plenty smart enough to realize his ticket to the big leagues might not be at his No.

  • SF Giants Press Clips Tuesday, March 28, 2017
SF Giants Press Clips Tuesday, March 28, 2017 San Francisco Chronicle Giants’ lineup takes shape on 14-run afternoon Henry Schulman SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — For the final Cactus League home game Monday, Giants manager Bruce Bochy constructed a fair preview for Opening Day. Brandon Belt batted second behind Denard Span, with Hunter Pence, Buster Posey and Brandon Crawford at three, four and five. Aaron Hill batted sixth as a place-holder for Eduardo Nuñez, and Joe Panik was seventh, which was fine with him. “I’ve got some protection behind me,” he said with a smile. That was Madison Bumgarner, who batted eighth, ahead of Gorkys Hernandez hitting ninth in the Jarrett Parker spot. That group had a field day in a 14-2 victory over the Reds. The Giants pinned 10 runs on left-handed starter Cody Reed, who had been having a nice spring. Bochy has not had a chance to tinker with batting orders because Posey and Crawford were at the World Baseball Classic for more than two weeks. Bochy is experimenting now, with Sunday’s season opener quickly approaching. “You look at the two guys at the top of the order: They’re on-base guys. The numbers show that,” Bochy said. “You’ve got experienced guys in the heart of the order with Pence, Buster and Craw. Look at what Craw is doing. You want him in that spot. “Going down the order, you’ve got power there with Parker versus right-handers. Panik’s another good hitter. Some days, you’ll see the pitcher hitting eighth.
