Sight Reading Level 2

Page 1 of 24 CHAOS The Rules

1. Sing independently. 2. Everyone must sing, and you should sing at a normal volume at your own speed or pace. 3. Use hand signs. 4. Ignore everyone around you. Create your own “bubble world.” 5. Keep until the teacher tells you to stop (usually about one minute). You must sing the entire time even if you sing it perfect the first time. If you finish early, then go back and sing it again. 6. You are not allowed to sing with others or work together in any way. 7. If you encounter a difficult spot, go back and practice that spot until time is called. 8. The teacher will simply watch you work. This is one of the ways you will receive your daily grade.

I know you will be successful with sight reading. Please remember sight reading is a skill and the only way to get good at something is by practicing!

Page 2 of 24 What’s different between level 1 and level 2? New melodic patterns New time signatures New New rhythm

New Melodic Patterns Most of the will still remain stepwise. However, you will also see the of an ascending do-mi-sol skip. Below is the difference between the stepwise ascending motion and the ascending skip.

Using the rules of CHAOS, practice the sight reading below. Be sure to practice until I say STOP. Even if you get it right the first time, go back and practice again. This is the Key of C. Your first note is C. Therefore, C is Do.

Key of C Key of F Key of G

Since our key signature has zero flats and one sharp, we are in the key of G. Therefore, G is Do.

G = Do A = Re B = Mi C = Fa

D = Sol E = La F# = Ti

Page 17 of 24 Indicates how many beats are in a measure and which note gets the beat.

Four beats per measure Two beats per measure

41 Since the time signature has 2 on the top. This means each measure receives only two beats.
