MEET THE AUTHOR COMES TO ZOOM!

Wednesday, October 14, 7:30pm Meet Ron Balson, author of The Girl from Berlin and Eli’s Promise

The Girl from Berlin, Ronald Balson’s fifth novel, is a vivid story of a young violinist whose talent enables her to survive World War II and a mysterious property dispute that threatens the ownership of her post-war haven, a villa in the Tuscan hills.

Eli’s Promise , which was recently published, moves between Poland in 1939, a displaced person’s camp in 1946, and Chicago in 1965. Both an historical novel and a mystery, it explores the human cost of war, the strength of family bonds, and the courage it takes to do what is right.

During the early 2000s, a complex lawsuit took attorney Ronald Balson to Wasrsaw, Zamosc and other Polish cities. He was profoundly moved by the scars and memorials of World War II which inspired him to write his first novel and international best seller Once We Were Brothers .

There is no charge for this event but registration is required. Please register at upcomingevents.torat-el.org Your reservation confirmation email will include the Zoom link and password.

This ongoing series has been made possible by a generous grant from the B’nai Sholom/Beth El Foundation.

SUKKOT & SIMCHAT TORAH Ushpizoom: Welcoming Guests Into Our Sukkah Come one, come all and join us for a Zoom Sukkah gathering as we take a few moments to join together in celebration of the Sukkot Holiday. From trivia games, to socializing, to a short teaching on the four species used during this Festival of joy- we will “gather” together to learn, socialize, and take time to celebrate together. If you have a Sukkah at home, please Zoom from the Sukkah so we can do a virtual “Sukkah hop” together and check out each other’s Sukkot. If you do not have a Sukkah, feel free to join us from your home. We look forward to celebrating with you! ZOOM ID 850-1881-5271 Wednesday, October 7, 7:30pm

A Sweet Simchat Torah Study We may not be able to easily dance together in celebration of Simchat Torah, but come and join us as we celebrate Simchat Torah through study and sweets. We will be sharing our favorite verses from the Torah over together over Zoom and making Torahs out of ice cream! In advance, please take a few moments to find one verse from Torah that is meaningful to you. And, if you like to be creative, start thinking about how you want to make a Torah out of ice cream to share with everyone during the “Zoom oneg” following the service! (I recommend pretzel sticks and rectangular ice cream sandwiches-but feel free to try something else.) ZOOM ID 874-2305-4579 Saturday, October 10, 7:15pm

Simchat Torah Service/And The Maftir Goes To…. Do you remember your Maftir, the Torah reading from your Bar or Bat Mitzvah? He will then place your picture above your portion and participants will have to guess which parsha belonged to who based on their picture. Don’t Forget To Vote – It’s A Mitzvah!

*The following is adapted from an article I wrote many years ago, but remains relevant today.

When I was growing up, our local voting station was in the garage of the house next door. I have fond memories of walking with my mother to Mrs. Sweeny’s house each time there was an election. I especially liked getting a sticker to show everyone that my family had voted that day! But somehow this excitement about voting diminished as I grew older, and throughout my early voting years, I became somewhat apathetic about voting. It was not until my years in Rabbinical School that I began to realize the error of my ways, recognizing that as both Jews and Americans we have the responsibility and the privilege to take this opportunity seriously. That is why each of us must make the time to vote in the November 3 rd election.

While we might not normally think of voting as a Jewish issue, concern and involvement with our government is long standing Jewish value. The Mishnah in Pirkei Avot, 3:3 teaches us to: Pray for the welfare of the government, for were it not for fear of it, people would swallow each other alive. We are to pray for a government, in other words, that will help keep us from harming one another, and encourage us to rise together in pursuit of the common good.

It is in keeping with this Mishnah that our community takes time each Shabbat to recite a Prayer for our Country based on the words of Rabbi Louis Ginzberg, one of the greatest Talmudists and legal minds of our movement. But praying for the welfare of our government is not enough. As Jews, we must actively take part in allowing our voices to be heard when it comes to the formation of our government. Judaism places significant value on being an active member of the greater community. As our rabbinic sage Hillel once taught: “Do not separate yourself from the community (Avot 2:5).” In all parts of our lives, we are a people that prioritizes community – from when we eat, to when we pray, to when we study. Our involvement in our larger American society is no exception.

How each of us votes is an extremely personal matter, but as with all things in life, we should strive to incorporate our Jewish values into this decision. To give but a few examples: How does the candidate of our choosing embrace policies in line with Jewish values of tikkun olam, bringing healing to our world? How do their policies express the Jewish value of tzedakah , pursuing justice, taking care of the poor and the vulnerable? What are the candidate’s stand vis-à-vis Israel? What are their thoughts on the environment, on education? And this year in particular, as a people that values the importance of pikuah nefesh, saving a life, and beriyut , living a healthy lifestyle, during this time in particular we must take time to consider how each candidate plans to combat the global pandemic that continues to rage on, and has taken the lives of more than 200,000 Americans.

Jewish values do not always fit neatly into the box of any single individual party. But each party, and each candidate, should be subject to evaluation keeping Jewish teachings and traditions at the center of our thought process. If we are not sure how Judaism views a particular issue or topic, we should make an effort to find out. Feel free to reach out to me at any point if I can be helpful with that conversation. Also, I would recommend exploring Jewish websites from various perspectives to get a more complete picture when it comes to any one of these issues.

One final practical note for this year: In addition to making sure that you are registered to vote, with the challenges that we are experiencing in our postal system, I would recommend that your ballot is either mailed early or brought directly to a drop box location directly to ensure that your vote is counted.

We just finished our High Holiday season. With that in mind, I would like to encourage us to remember to use our words, our texts, our posts and our blog comments with care. Everyone reading this article cares about this country. We must not let the divisive and toxic culture that bombards us every day erode our Jewish responsibility of fostering respectful, civil, thoughtful discourse between one another. Many of our grandparents and great grandparents could not have dreamed of the opportunity to participate in setting the direction of the society in which they lived. May each of us, blessed with the ability to participate in our democracy, remember to take with seriousness the blessing and privilege that is our opportunity to vote.

Beyond Dispute: Debates That Shape Jewish Life

2 Part Zoom Series

October 21-November18 January 20-February 24

Join Rabbi Schonbrun for this two-part video series from The Jewish Theological Seminary. Debates— philosophical, spiritual, ethical, and cultural—are at the heart of Judaism and Jewish life. Are religion and reason compatible? Can Jewish law change based on context? How do we teach and talk about the and the State of Israel? Should we prioritize Jewish causes or universal causes in our giving? Is Jewish tradition intrinsically patriarchal and ableist? Is our relationship with God defined by human obligation or divine compassion? Go beyond the conflicts themselves to uncover the essential questions that underlie them, and to build a more inclusive view of the Jewish past, present, and future. Zoom Meeting ID: 838 8136 9332 Due to the nature of this course, there is a $20 material fee. Pre-paid registration only at upcomingevents.torat-el.org or through the temple office by October 16. We will take a moment to "show off" our cute animals, and give thanks for these creatures that are also a part of God's creation. If your pet is no longer living, we will take a moment to remember them. Feel free to bring a picture to share with us. Any dog over the age of 13 will be eligible for a "Bark Mitzvah!"
