he Camillians in the , in partnership with CADIS-Taiwan through St. Mary’s Hospital-Luo - dong, organized a Medical Mission to selected Tsitios in Antipolo City last July 5–7, 2019. Some of these sitios are almost isolated because of their geographical features—steep trails that these areas can only be reached by foot. Several local Camillian institutions and offices involved in the Medical Mission were St. Camillus Medical Center (SCMC) and St. Camillus Polyclinic-Makati that sent doctors and provided the needed medical equipment. The Nuestra Señora de la Annunciata , headed by Fr. Evan Paul Villanueva, provided logistical support as the main coordi- nator to the sitios. The Camillian Philanthropic and Health Development Office (CPHDO) spearheaded the fundrais- ing efforts for other needs such as food, transportation, etc. and was in charge of the Camillian health volunteers. St. Mary’s Hospital sent a medical team and donated cash to buy medicine. The core team met thrice and planned to ensure the smooth operation of the Medical Mission. The core team was composed of Fr. Gabriel Garcia (CEO, Camillian Socio- Health Institutions); Fr. Evan Paul Villanueva; Fr. John Paul Alvarado (Executive Director, CPHDO); Drs. Edwin and Lydia Labro (SCMC); Yolanda Rodriguez, Mely Salvador and Paraluman Ignacio (community health volunteers, Si- tio Boso-Boso); Khalelha Añonuevo (PDO Officer, CPHDO) and Gerlita Condino-Enrera (Camillian Social Worker).

Day 1–July 5, 2019, Sitio San Joseph The volunteers of the community had an early start at 7:30AM as they were the ones in charge of the registra- tion of the residents who wanted to avail of free medical services. The actual medical mission started at 9:00AM and ended at 12 noon. A total of 10 doctors participated and a few volunteers from CPHDO’s Heart in Hands Donors’ Circle showed their support by assisting in the process through translating, handing out water and snacks, and calling out names of the patients to claim (continued on page 4) SHEPHERD’S CARE PROVINCIAL’S CORNER Fr. cross the Philippine Province, a lot of activities were arranged in relation to the celebration of the feast day of St. in the month of July. One of them was the medical mission conducted in three areas of Antipolo, ARizal, Philippines by a big delegation of medical staff from St. Mary’s Hospital, Lu- odong, Yilan and from other hospitals in Taipei, Taiwan together with a large number of local medical staff and volunteers. At the conclusion of the medical mis- sion, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between St. Mary’s Hospital and St. Camillus Medical Center. Another highlight related to the celebration was the recognition of outstanding employees of our socio-health care institutions in the Philippines and loyalty service awards for some of our employees in Taiwan; in Indonesia, we had one brother who took the solemn vows and was ordained the following month; and in the Arch- diocese of Karachi, Pakistan, the feast of St. Camillus was celebrated for the first time together with the Lay Camillian Family accompanied by Fr. Mushtaq Anjum. But the whole Order was saddened with the demise of the 60th successor of St. Camillus as General. Due to certain disease, Fr. Leocir Pessini died on the 24th of July at a Camillian community in São Paolo, . He had just visited the Philippine Province a year ago and was much loved by the religious and lay collabo- rators with his presence. May the Lord grant him eternal rest in His kingdom. Let us continue to pray for one another and ask the Lord for the grace to always recognize and serve Him in the sick.

CAMUP 9 Pakistan Celebrates the Feast of St. Camillus de Lellis Fr. Mushtaq Anjum, MI

KARACHI – The feast of St. Camillus de Lellis, the patron saint of the sick, nurses, doctors, hospitals and healthcare workers, is celebrated on July 14 in the liturgical calendar of the . The Order of the Ministers of the Infirm (Camillians) and the Archdiocese of Karachi celebrated the feast of this great saint of charity for the first time in Pakistan. His Eminence Joseph Cardinal Coutts presided the Eucharistic celebration. Fr. Saleh Diego, the Vicar General, the Diocesan clergy and the religious from various male and fe- male congregations were present. In his homily Fr. Mushtaq Anjum, a Camil- lian priest, said that St. Camillus brought “new hope and courage” to our families and strug- gling youth. St. Camillus suffered neglect as he lost his mother, Camilla, at a young age. He lost his father, Giovanni, in his teens. Such neglect and lack of paternal and maternal af- fection resulted in his misbehavior. However, he took courage with the grace of God and became a renewed man after his conversion. Mr. Waqar Naeem of The Jesus Youth showed this conversion in a short tableau and how St. Camillus loved and cared for the sick people. The Lay Camillian Family members brought offerings and the choir sang beautiful spiritual songs as they led the congregation into prayer. After the Eucharistic celebration, the heal- ing service continued. Fr. Shakeel Gulzar, Fr. Aamir Bhatti, Fr. Nazir John, OFM Cap., Fr. Noman Arif, Fr. Shehzad Peter and Fr. Mush- taq led the community into prayer, asking God’s healing and protection for the sick and the suffering. The priests laid their hands on the sick, prayed and anointed them with holy oil. This brought many blessings to the sick, to their families and to the church. After the celebration, sweets were distrib- uted on this beautiful joyous occasion.

Prayer for Ancestors: According to the Chinese custom, August, the 7th lunar month, is when the spirits come out from hell and instill fear to the people; thus, the people make some ceremonies to chase them away. Even the Church adapts to this custom by organizing prayer ceremonies for the ancestors at the hospital, handicapped center, senior center and nursing school.
