CMSC 451 Dave Mount CMSC 451: Lecture 19 NP-Completeness: Reductions Tue, Nov 21, 2017 Reading: Chapt. 8 in KT and Chapt. 8 in DPV. Some of the reductions discussed here are not in either text. Recap: We have introduced a number of concepts on the way to defining NP-completeness: Decision Problems/Language recognition: are problems for which the answer is either yes or no. These can also be thought of as language recognition problems, assuming that the input has been encoded as a string. For example: HC = fG j G has a Hamiltonian cycleg MST = f(G; c) j G has a MST of cost at most cg: P: is the class of all decision problems which can be solved in polynomial time. While MST 2 P, we do not know whether HC 2 P (but we suspect not). Certificate: is a piece of evidence that allows us to verify in polynomial time that a string is in a given language. For example, the language HC above, a certificate could be a sequence of vertices along the cycle. (If the string is not in the language, the certificate can be anything.) NP: is defined to be the class of all languages that can be verified in polynomial time. (Formally, it stands for Nondeterministic Polynomial time.) Clearly, P ⊆ NP. It is widely believed that P 6= NP. To define NP-completeness, we need to introduce the concept of a reduction. Reductions: The class of NP-complete problems consists of a set of decision problems (languages) (a subset of the class NP) that no one knows how to solve efficiently, but if there were a polynomial time solution for even a single NP-complete problem, then every problem in NP would be solvable in polynomial time. -

The aim of this paper is to show the most wide-spread misconceptions, why they are wrong, and why we should care. Introduction Recently, I have been working on a survey about algorithmic approaches to virtual machine allocation in cloud data centers [11]. While doing so, I was shocked (again) to see how often the notions of NP-completeness or NP-hardness are used in a faulty, inadequate, or imprecise way in the literature. Here is an example from an – otherwise excellent – paper that appeared recently in IEEE Transactions on Computers, one of the most prestigious journals of the field: “Since the problem is NP-hard, no polynomial time optimal algorithm exists.” This claim, if it were shown to be true, would finally settle the famous P versus NP problem, which is one of the seven Millenium Prize Problems [10]; thus correctly solving it would earn the authors 1 million dollars. But of course, the authors do not attack this problem; the above claim is just an error in the paper. -

Captures many of the reduction arguments we have seen. – Rice’s Theorem, a general theorem about undecidability of properties of Turing machine behavior (or program behavior). Computable Functions Computable Functions • These are needed to define mapping reducibility, ≤m. • Definition: A function f: Σ1* →Σ2* is computable if there is a Turing machine (or program) such that, for every w in Σ1*, M on input w halts with just f(w) on its tape. • To be definite, use basic TM model, except replace qacc and qrej states with one qhalt state. • So far in this course, we’ve focused on accept/reject decisions, which let TMs decide language membership. • That’s the same as computing functions from Σ* to { accept, reject }. • Now generalize to compute functions that produce strings. Total vs. partial computability • We require f to be total = defined for every string. • Could also define partial computable (= partial recursive) functions, which are defined on some subset of Σ1*. -

The original Complexity Zoo is a website created by Scott Aaronson which contains a (more or less) comprehensive list of Complexity Classes studied in the area of theoretical computer science known as Computa- tional Complexity. I took on the (mostly painless, thank god for regular expressions) task of translating the Zoo’s HTML code to LATEX for two reasons. First, as a regular Zoo patron, I thought, “what better way to honor such an endeavor than to spruce up the cages a bit and typeset them all in beautiful LATEX.” Second, I thought it would be a perfect project to develop complexity, a LATEX pack- age I’ve created that defines commands to typeset (almost) all of the complexity classes you’ll find here (along with some handy options that allow you to conveniently change the fonts with a single option parameters). Jerzy Marcinkowski Institute of Computer Science University of Wroc law, [email protected] Abstract In this paper we prove that there exists a Horn clause H such that the problem: given a Horn clause G. Is G a consequence of H ? is not recursive. Equivalently, there exists a one-clause PROLOG program such that there is no PROLOG im- plementation answering TRUE if the program implies a given goal and FALSE otherwise. We give a short survey of earlier results concerning clause implication and prove a classical Linial-Post theorem as a consequence of one of them. 1 Introduction 1.1 Introduction Our main interest is the analysis of the decidability of the implication problem H1 =)H2 where H1 and H2 are Horn clauses in the language of the first order logic without equality. We adopt the following taxonomy: A literal is an atomic formula (an atom) or its negation. An atom is of the form Q(t1; t2; : : : tk) where Q is a k-ary predicate symbol and t's are first order terms constructed from function symbols, variables and constants. A clause is a universal closure of a disjunction of literals. A Horn clause (or a program clause) is a clause with at most one positive (i.e. not negated ) literal. A Horn clause with k negative and one positive literal will be called a k-clause (here we do not obey the standard that a k- clause is a disjunction of k literals). A Horn clause can be in the usual way written in an implication form. -

LSPACE VS NP IS AS HARD AS P VS NP FRANK VEGA Abstract. The P versus NP problem is a major unsolved problem in com- puter science. This consists in knowing the answer of the following question: Is P equal to NP? Another major complexity classes are LSPACE, PSPACE, ESPACE, E and EXP. Whether LSPACE = P is a fundamental question that it is as important as it is unresolved. We show if P = NP, then LSPACE = NP. Consequently, if LSPACE is not equal to NP, then P is not equal to NP. According to Lance Fortnow, it seems that LSPACE versus NP is easier to be proven. However, with this proof we show this problem is as hard as P versus NP. Moreover, we prove the complexity class P is not equal to PSPACE as a direct consequence of this result. Furthermore, we demonstrate if PSPACE is not equal to EXP, then P is not equal to NP. In addition, if E = ESPACE, then P is not equal to NP. 1. Introduction In complexity theory, a function problem is a computational problem where a single output is expected for every input, but the output is more complex than that of a decision problem [6]. A functional problem F is defined as a binary relation (x; y) 2 R over strings of an arbitrary alphabet Σ: R ⊂ Σ∗ × Σ∗: A Turing machine M solves F if for every input x such that there exists a y satisfying (x; y) 2 R, M produces one such y, that is M(x) = y [6]. -

Given an instance of XOR 2SAT and a positive integer 2K , the problem exponential exclusive-or 2-satisfiability consists in deciding whether this Boolean formula has a truth assignment with at leat K satisfiable clauses. We prove exponential exclusive-or 2-satisfiability is in QP and NP-complete. In this way, we show QP ⊆ NP . Keywords: Complexity Classes · Completeness · Logarithmic Space · Nondeterministic · XOR 2SAT. 1 Introduction The P versus NP problem is a major unsolved problem in computer science [4]. This is considered by many to be the most important open problem in the field [4]. It is one of the seven Millennium Prize Problems selected by the Clay Mathematics Institute to carry a US$1,000,000 prize for the first correct solution [4]. It was essentially mentioned in 1955 from a letter written by John Nash to the United States National Security Agency [1]. However, the precise statement of the P = NP problem was introduced in 1971 by Stephen Cook in a seminal paper [4]. In 1936, Turing developed his theoretical computational model [14]. The deterministic and nondeterministic Turing machines have become in two of the most important definitions related to this theoretical model for computation [14]. A deterministic Turing machine has only one next action for each step defined in its program or transition function [14]. A nondeterministic Turing machine could contain more than one action defined for each step of its program, where this one is no longer a function, but a relation [14]. -

11 Reductions We mentioned above the idea of solving problems by translating them into known soluble problems, or showing that a new problem is insoluble by translating a known insoluble into it. Reductions are the formal tool to implement this idea. It turns out that there are several subtly different variations – we will mainly use one form of reduction, which lets us make a fine analysis of uncomputability. First, we introduce a technical term for a Register Machine whose purpose is to translate one problem into another. Definition 12 A Turing transducer is an RM that takes an instance d of a problem (D, Q) in R0 and halts with an instance d0 = f(d) of (D0,Q0) in R0. / Thus f must be a computable function D D0 that translates the problem, and the → transducer is the machine that computes f. In 1936, Turing developed his theoretical com- putational model. He based his model on how he perceived mathematicians think. As digital computers were developed in the 40's and 50's, the Turing machine proved itself as the right theoretical model for computation. Quickly though we discovered that the basic Turing machine model fails to account for the amount of time or memory needed by a computer, a critical issue today but even more so in those early days of computing. The key idea to measure time and space as a function of the length of the input came in the early 1960's by Hartmanis and Stearns. -
