Gerber This dissertation is a biographical study of Moses Hayim Luzzatto (1707–1746 or 1747). It presents the social and religious context in which Luzzatto was variously celebrated as the leader of a kabbalistic-messianic confraternity in Padua, condemned as a deviant threat by rabbis in Venice and central and eastern Europe, and accepted by the Portuguese Jewish community after relocating to Amsterdam. -
A Fresh Perspective on the History of Hasidic Judaism
eSharp Issue 20: New Horizons A Fresh Perspective on the History of Hasidic Judaism Eva van Loenen (University of Southampton) Introduction In this article, I shall examine the history of Hasidic Judaism, a mystical,1 ultra-orthodox2 branch of Judaism, which values joyfully worshipping God’s presence in nature as highly as the strict observance of the laws of Torah3 and Talmud.4 In spite of being understudied, the history of Hasidic Judaism has divided historians until today. Indeed, Hasidic Jewish history is not one monolithic, clear-cut, straightforward chronicle. Rather, each scholar has created his own narrative and each one is as different as its author. While a brief introduction such as this cannot enter into all the myriad divergences and similarities between these stories, what I will attempt to do here is to incorporate and compare an array of different views in order to summarise the history of Hasidism and provide a more objective analysis, which has not yet been undertaken. Furthermore, my historical introduction in Hasidic Judaism will exemplify how mystical branches of mainstream religions might develop and shed light on an under-researched division of Judaism. The main focus of 1 Mystical movements strive for a personal experience of God or of his presence and values intuitive, spiritual insight or revelationary knowledge. The knowledge gained is generally ‘esoteric’ (‘within’ or hidden), leading to the term ‘esotericism’ as opposed to exoteric, based on the external reality which can be attested by anyone. 2 Ultra-orthodox Jews adhere most strictly to Jewish law as the holy word of God, delivered perfectly and completely to Moses on Mount Sinai. -

University of Cape Town ABSTRACT Micha Yosef Berdichewski (1865 - 1921) is considered by many to be the most influential Jewish author of his generation. His literary activity encompassed both fiction and non-fiction. Berdichewski's fictional world has been termed "a spiritual organic unity" (Almagor 1968) inasmuch as his hero tends to reappear in many like-guises across the various stories and there is a great deal of repetition of themes, characters, motifs and even semantic elements throughout his work. The present work aims to show that the seeming uniformity in Berdichewski's writing is misleading. It postulates that the identity of feature that marks the Berdichewskian text is not productive of sameness, but rather that it promotes greater textual density through the adherence of variability within correlates. It purports that though Berdichewski's apparent stereotyping is due, at least in part, to an abiding concern with some central issues - and thus that his various narratives may be seen as the continuing working out of these concerns - these are never fully resolved but only interacted with from varying, quite disparate, perspectives. -
Introduction of Rabbi Yosef Kapach to His Edition of Moses Maimonides
Introduction of Rabbi Yosef Kapach to his edition of Moses Maimonides’ Mishneh Torah (translated by Michael J. Bohnen) Rabbi Kapach was the foremost editor of the works of Maimonides. Born in Yemen in 1917, he used ancient manuscripts to restore the text of the Mishneh Torah. Several fascinating articles about Rabbi Kapach can be found at www.chayas.com/rabbi.htm The following is a summary and translation of his 20 page Introduction to his edition of the Mishneh Torah. Translator’s Summary My Work. When in my youth I studied the Mishneh Torah with my grandfather of blessed memory, most people used printed books, each with his own edition, but my grandfather and several of the others had manuscripts which were several hundred years old, each scroll of a different age. The errors and deficiencies of the printed texts were well known. The changes that Maimonides made over time in the Commentary on the Mishnah, after completing the Mishneh Torah, he then inserted in the Mishnah Torah. These are all found in our manuscripts, but some are not found in the printed texts. The Jews of Yemen are a conservative group. They would never have presumed to "correct" or "amend" a text that came into their hands, and certainly not the works of Maimonides. However, the Mishneh Torah was subjected to severe editing by the printers and various editors who made emendations of style, language, the structure of sentences and the division of halachot, to the extent that there is hardly any halacha that has not been emended. In this edition of ours, we are publishing, with God’s help, the words of Maimonides in full as we received them from his blessed hand. -

THE LEGACY OF THE GRAND DUCHY OF LITHUANIA © Antony Polonsky 266 By the end of the nineteenth century, the concept of the „Litvak" had become well- established in the Jewish world. Let me give a few literary examples. I will begin with two by non-Litvaks. In one of his „hasidic tales", „Tsvishn tsvay berg" (Be- tween Two Mountains), Yitshak Leibush Peretz describes the conflict between the hasidim and their mitnagdic opponents. He gives both sides their voice but clearly comes down on the side of the former. The story recounts the clash between the Brisker rov and his best pupil, who has left him to found a hasidic court. He ex- plains why: Your Torah, Rabbi, is nothing but law. It is without pity. Your Torah contains not a spark of compas- sion. And that is why it is without joy, without air to breathe. It is nothing but steel and iron-iron commandments, copper laws. It is a very refined Torah, suitable for scholars, for the select few. The Brisker rov was silent, so the rebbe continued: „Tell me, Rabbi, what have you got for ordinary people? For the woodchopper, the butcher, the tradesman, the simple man? And, most especially for the sinful man? What do you have to offer those who are not scholars?...". To convince the Brisker rov, the Bialer rebbe takes him to see his followers on Simkhat torah when they are transformed by the festival. This does not convince the Brisker rov. „We must say the afternoon prayer," the Brisker rov suddenly announced in his harsh voice-and eve- rything vanished. -

LEAGUE OF NATIONS PROTECTION OF MINORITIES IN UPPER SILESIA PETITION FROM THE “ASSOCIATION OF POLES IN GERMANY”, SECTION I, OF OPPELN, CONCERNING THE SITUATION OF THE POLISH MINORITY IN GERMAN UPPER SILESIA Note by the Secretary-General. In accordance with the procedure established for petitions addressed to the Council of the League of Nations under Article 147 of the Germano-Polish Convention of May 15th, 1922, concerning Upper Silesia, the Secretary-General forwarded this petition with twenty appendices, on December 21st, 1931, to the German Government for its observations. A fter having obtained from the Acting-President of the Council an extension of the time limit fixed for the presentation of its observations, the German Government forwarded them in a letter dated March 30th, 1932, accompanied by twenty-nine appendices. The Secretary-General has the honour to circulate, for the consideration of the Council, the petition and the observations of the German Government with their respective appendices.
