Forever alone in a crowd, Arthur Fleck seeks connection. Yet, as he trods the sooted Gotham City streets and rides the graffitied mass transit rails of a hostile town teeming with division and dissatisfaction, Arthur wears two masks. One, he paints on for his day job as a clown. The other he can never remove; it’s the guise he projects in a futile attempt to feel he’s a part of the world around him, and not the misunderstood man whom life is repeatedly beating down. Fatherless, Arthur has a fragile mother, arguably his best friend, who nicknamed him Happy, a moniker that’s fostered in Arthur a smile that hides the heartache beneath. But, when bullied by teens on the streets, taunted by suits on the subway, or simply teased by his fellow clowns at work, this social outlier only becomes even more out of sync with everyone around him. Directed, co-written and produced by Todd Phillips, “Joker” is the filmmaker’s original vision of the infamous DC villain, an origin story infused with, but distinctly outside, the character’s more traditional mythologies. Phillips’ exploration of Arthur Fleck, who is indelibly portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix, is of a man struggling to find his way in Gotham’s fractured society. Longing for any light to shine on him, he tries his hand as a stand-up comic, but finds the joke always seems to be on him. Caught in a cyclical existence between apathy and cruelty and, ultimately, betrayal, Arthur makes one bad decision after another that brings about a chain reaction of escalating events in this gritty, allegorical character study. -

I Love You, Man: Gendered narratives of friendship in contemporary Hollywood comedies Article submitted to Feminist Media Studies Abstract: This article begins with a simple observation: there are very few contemporary Hollywood films in which women are shown becoming friends. This is in contrast to the “bromance”, in which new connections between men are privileged, yet this pattern has gone largely unremarked in the literature. This article has two aims: to sketch this pattern and explore reasons for it through comparing the “girlfriend flick” and “bromance”. To do this, we first discuss those rare occasions when women do become friends on screen, using Jackie Stacey’s (1988) work to understand the difficulties this narrative trajectory poses for Hollywood. This raises questions about the relationship between the homosocial and homosexual which set up our comparison of female and male friendship films and provides the rationale for our focus on the beginnings of friendships as moments where tensions around gendered fascinations are most obvious. The films discussed are Baby Mama (McCullers, 2008), Step Brothers (McKay, 2008), I Love You, Man (Hamburg, 2009), Funny People (Apatow, 2009), Due Date (Phillips, 2010), and Crazy, Stupid, Love (Ficarra & Requa, 2011). The differences we identify hinge on issues of gendered representability and identification which have long been at the heart of feminist film scholarship. 1 Gender Inequality in 500 Popular Films: Examining On-Screen Portrayals and Behind-the-Scenes Employment Patterns in Motion Pictures Released between 2007-2012 Dr. Stacy L. Smith, Marc Choueiti, Elizabeth Scofield, & Dr. Katherine Pieper Annenberg School for Communication & Journalism University of Southern California [email protected] This study examines gender roles of speaking characters in top-grossing films. This is our fourth Annenberg report, focusing on the gender of independent speaking characters appearing in 100 top- grossing fictional films from 2012, 2010, 2009, 2008, and 2007. In total, 500 movies and over 21,000 speaking characters have been content analyzed for gender prevalence, demographic information, and hypersexualization. Below, we highlight the study's key findings. Key Findings Gender Prevalence Females are grossly underrepresented on screen in 2012 films. Out of 4,475 speaking characters on screen, only 28.4% are female. This translates into a ratio of 2.51 males to every 1 female on screen. 2012 reveals the lowest percentage of on-screen females (28.4%) across the 5-year sample. Only 6% of the top-grossing films in 2012 featured a balanced cast, or females in 45-54.9% of all speaking roles. Just over a quarter of all narrators (27.5%) are female. Only 16.7% of the 1,228 directors, writers, and producers are female across the 100 top-grossing films of 2012. Women accounted for 4.1% of directors, 12.2% of writers, and 20% of producers. This calculates to a 2012 ratio of 5 males to every 1 female behind the camera. -

DUE DATE From director Todd Phillips, “Due Date” stars Robert Downey Jr. and Zach Galifianakis as two unlikely companions who are thrown together on a road trip that turns out to be as life-changing as it is outrageous. Downey plays Peter Highman, an expectant first-time father whose wife’s due date is a mere five days away. As Peter hurries to catch a flight home from Atlanta to be at her side for the birth, his best intentions go completely awry when a chance encounter with aspiring actor Ethan Tremblay (Galifianakis) forces Peter to hitch a ride with Ethan—on what turns out to be a cross-country road trip that will ultimately destroy several cars, numerous friendships and Peter’s last nerve. Todd Phillips directs from a screenplay by Alan R. Crítica a Joker (2019) Ysidro Eduardo García Plenamar ¿Cuánto revuelo y alboroto puede causar una película para su propio beneficio o perjuicio? En su edición de marzo de 2019, la revista mexicana Letras Libres publicó una conversación sostenida entre tres críticos de cine. Uno de ellos señaló con certeza que, en la industria cinematográfica actual, la publicidad y las críticas a ciertas películas de alto perfil constituyen el propio entretenimiento, a veces por encima de la película misma1. Esta presunción encuentra un ejemplo perfecto e hiperbólico en la anticipada Joker (Todd Phillips, 2019), película que pretendo reseñar más adelante. En su momento, hubo opiniones en contra cuando Warner Bros. y DC anunciaron la realización de un proyecto sobre los orígenes del legendario némesis de Batman2. La percepción fue cambiando hacia la curiosidad mientras se filtraban informaciones sobre la película3. El verdadero giro de apreciación ocurrió cuando Joker –quizá ante todo pronóstico dado a que su género es adverso al circuito de festivales4– ganó el León de Oro en el pasado Festival de Venecia, otorgado por un jurado presidido por la directora argentina Lucrecia Martel. Luego, logró tomar fortaleza definitiva con una entusiasta recepción en el Festival de Toronto5. Joker también ha cosechado su buena dosis de polémica previo a su estreno comercial. A saber, una parte de la crítica entiende que es una película “tóxica”6 y que justifica la violencia7. Otros argumentan que simpatiza con la cultura misógina manifestada a través del movimiento denominado incel –o célibes involuntarios, en español8–, compuesto de hombres resentidos con la sociedad y su propia “incapacidad” de congeniar con las mujeres.
