Additional game drives cost ZAR 300 pp. (approx. US$ 30) • Children must be 5 and older to go on game drives • You can book game drives a day in advance. • Guests are taken out by a game ranger and a tracker, on foot (if you like, and if the grass is not too high) or in open Off Road Vehicles. • Game drives are either early in the morning, with bush coffee, returning later for a hearty breakfast, or, • late afternoon with sundowners, returning later for dinner. • There is a lot to do in the area, you decide your own action: relaxation ratio! • Ideas include a famous astronomy observatory, a predator park, world heritage archaeological sites, de Wildt Cheetah farm ( a wild animal rehabilitation centre) • Transfer from the lodge after the conference is for your own cost, however, we will coordinate it to suit your flights and ensure the 8 best rates 4 10/4/2011 Accommodation There is a choice of single, double and family rooms. 2 children under 18 sharing a double room with their parents stay free. And with the top three reasons to visit less than a six-hour drive from Johannesburg, this region is more than fun. It’s convenient. Gambling is the name of the game here, although not always in the traditional sense. Place your luck in a knowledgeable ranger’s hands at Madikwe Game Reserve and bet on how many lions he’ll spot on the sunrise wildlife drive. You have to stay to play at this exclusive reserve on the edge of the Kalahari, and the lodges here will be a splurge for many. But for that once-in-a-lifetime, romantic Out of Africa–style safari experience, South Africa’s fourth-largest reserve can’t be beat. If you’d rather spot the Big Five without professional help, do a self-drive safari in Pi- lanesberg National Park. The most accessible park in the country is cheaper than Madikwe, and still has 7000 animals packed into its extinct volcano confines. Plus it’s less than three hours’ drive from Jo’burg. It is disheartening and alarming that, three years later, the trade still thrives and little has been done to enforce the new law.     Summary: PPT facilitation at Sun City Summary of initial scoping report INTRODUCTION The aim of the Pro-Poor Tourism (PPT) Pilots project is for the PPT team and site partners to identify and implement linkages that bring benefits to poor people, and make business sense to the operator. The initial (‘scoping’) stage of PPT facilitation involves understanding the current linkages between the tourism company and local (poor) stakeholders, and identifying the needs and assets of the company and local stakeholders. Building on this, the next key step is to identify the type of linkage or linkages that should be developed and with which local partners. From there, PPT facilitation supports the partnership through stages - from making joint commitments into implementation. Initial scoping reports have been prepared for each partner site by compiling information gathered during 20031, in order to provide background information for prioritisation and implementation of PPT actions. These cover 1. stakeholder analysis (identification of needs and assets of company and community); 2. assessment of existing linkages between stakeholders; 3. discussion of potential linkages. This report is a summary of the full scoping report (which is available on request). What is PPT facilitation? PPT facilitation is a service provided to a tourism company and its local stakeholders, to assist in building linkage(s) between them. The support facilitates the process of developing a joint vision, exploring mutually beneficial linkages, planning tasks, and achieving successful implementation. The facilitation format is flexible but provides a generic tool that will be adapted to each site. It can be applied to the creation of a very specific linkage concerning one product, or to building a long-lasting partnership with many components.
