At the same time was introduced to the local CEC by participating in special committees on issues that affected our region, such as rezoning and overcrowding at our schools. For middle school, I again served as a co- chair for the SLT, and also on special projects, such as working with the iLearn organization to use video technology so that students could present their projects to parents at their homes or offices. I also continued to participate in some special committees managed by the local CEC. In fact, I’ve been working with one committee to explore new ways to help students and families navigate the high school application process. Personal I’ve always enjoyed being an advocate for issues, and helping find solutions. I have to dreams as a Statement volunteer – that all children should get the best education possible, and that all families should feel like a partner with their school in supporting students. My voluntary work with Parent Associations and SLTs has always focused on these goals. I would be fascinated to see how I could work with the Citywide Council on High Schools to explore these issues, as students become more independent learners. I learned I could be effective in this area from my 25 years of experience with a large technology company. I was often asked to work with a wide range of people to address a broad range of topics, finding ways to improve our clients’ situation, whether it was introducing a new technology, or simply finding ways to improve communication. As a volunteer supporting NYC schools, I’ve been considered inclusive and encouraging to others. Because my teams were often viewed as successful, I was often asked to run for key roles in the Parent Association and the SLT. I feel my skills and interest could benefit the work of the Citywide Council on High Schools.

Personal As a product of public schools myself, I am a firm believer in the value of public education, not just for Statement the benefit of the students themselves, but for the health of the very communities they serve. N/Awhere is the rising inequality of the new Gilded Age felt more keenly than in our beloved city of New York, and no institution is better poised to address that inequality than the New York Public Schools. With a son in high school, a daughter in middle school, and another daughter poised to enter the Pre-K lottery, my wife and I, just like parents throughout the city, have an enormous stake in doing all we can to help ensure that our children, along with all of their classmates throughout the city, are provided with a public education to equal that of the best private schools, so that they graduate onto a more level playing field. Our very best public schools do that now; more need to do so. In my work editing animated films like Finding Nemo, Toy Story 2, and The SpongeBob Movie, I've spent a lot of time thinking about how to make children happy through entertainment. I'd like to devote that same energy to helping make all of our children happy through education.

Applicant I am a current member of the School Leadership Team at Bard High School Early College Queens Background (24Q299), and I frequently also help out with numerous other school activities. But I have to be careful not to say hello to my daughter in front of her friends. That would be uncool. Personal My two-year term on Bard's SLT ends in June 2015, so I was beginning to wonder what I would do Statement next year in terms of volunteering some time at my daughter's high school. Time is money, as the old saying goes, and I think it is essential for every parent to put in the time, helping to make the schools a better place for our kids -- just as it is mandatory that we all contribute our money through taxes. I think serving on a Citywide Education Council next year would be a perfect use of my time, and I hope you agree.

2015 NYC Education Council Elections

Candidate Profiles for Citywide Council on High Schools

Candidate Michelle Gebrail

DBN: 26Q415 IEP: N/A ELL N/A

Applicant I've served as a poll worker at the NYC Board of Elections since 2011. I take great pride in serving my Background borough and community. I've also had the opportunity to be the PTA Vice President of Fundraising at Benjamin N. Cardozo High School for the past two years. Working with the Executive Board to help raise money for the school as well as bringing awareness about various programs has been very rewarding. Currently, I'm one of two Queens Representatives to the Citywide Council on High Schools. I was elected to this position on September 11, 2014. It was a special election because I filled a spot for the previous representative who resigned. I've had the opportunity to visit schools and see what their specific needs are. I met with principals, superintendents, teachers, parent coordinators and parents. As a result, I was able to submit Capital Plans for several districts in Queens so that these schools could submit requests to improve their educational environments. As a council member I started to build a rapport with these passionate educators and parents and it would be a pleasure and an HONOR to continue the important work I have started and been able to accomplish with the help of our most dedicated council members. Personal As the daughter of a retired educator, I know first hand how important parent involvement is to our Statement students. Educators can't do it alone nor should they have too. It is a huge undertaking to educate our children so they can compete with students worldwide. Parent involvement is key to the success of our most precious resource...our children. That's why it's vital for parents to volunteer in ANY way they can if they are able to do so. As a concerned parent and New York City Resident in the Borough of Queens, I'd like a voice in determining educational policies that affect ALL children in the NYCDOE. I come from a family who are dedicated to serving their communities. New York is a very diversified city and I can work with people of ALL backgrounds on ANY level. I'm often asked WHY I invest so much time to our schools and community. I respond it's not the school I'm investing in, its OUR CHILDREN. They are our future leaders. As parents we have to guide our children on the right path. I've always thought it better to teach by setting a good example as opposed to just telling children what to do. Our technologically advanced children are VERY smart. We can TELL them what we want them to do or SHOW them how it should be done.

Applicant My daughter Has participated it the IEP program for over six years. I've also been involved in school fundraisers, school blood drives, and anything else that can benefit my daughter, her classmates and teachers, and her school. Personal I believe that New York City schools, and their teachers and staffs, have the potential to be among the Statement very best in the nation. In order to achieve this, I truly believe that every parent of a city public school student needs to assist in whatever way available to them in making this a reality. I realize that everyone has different scheduling availability and needs, but I also believe that within that framework parents must be willing to volunteer to do their part to make the teachers and staff's jobs easier and more successful. Volunteering for a bake sale, or to chaperone a class trip, is something that any interested parent can manage. Further involvement, in school workshops and functions, as one's schedule permits, further benefits the students and their support teams. I've always tried to do my part, and essentially never say "no" to an opportunity to help. I regard this opportunity to dedicate some time to the Council as the next logical step, should I be lucky enough to be chosen.

Personal As a parent of 3 children that have been products of the NYC School system, as well as the borough of Statement queens, I have become an advocate for better and more efficient ways of our children being taught! Yet unfortunately what we have is a group of individuals dictating what is best for our kids, without ever knowing our children! without taking the time to walk into our cities overcrowded classrooms, and really inhaling how difficult it must be for our poorly trained teachers to reach even one of them! Our system is broken! Our teachers are poorly trained and sadly underpaid! our schools are overcrowded! our educational curriculum is archaic, and bent! The parents in our communities do not participate enough with our schools, teachers and especially their own children! Many of our parents can’t even help their own kids with homework, because they lack in the appropriate educational experience. Our kids are the ones that will pay the price! We are a great city, we are a great country, but we must fight harder for our kids, so that perhaps, they will and can have a better tomorrow.

I would like to advocate for more educational technological material and devices in the classroom to enhance the learning environment but also to advance our children with the global community so that they are adequately ready to compete in the global employment environment as oppose to just the local employment platform that is slowly depleting of future jobs. I would like to see public school children have the benefit of a private school education and low income families provided with the technological devices in their homes to aide them in assisting as well as learning with their children.

Applicant We spent years with the French speaking community of New York to get Dual Language Programs in Background NYC public schools. Eventually, a few very successful programs started, most notably in Brooklyn and the Upper West Side, and eventually Queens where we reside started. A number of after school programs also took off. We also were able to get the help and support of the French Government. I also started getting involved with my daughter's high school in her freshman year in order to bring foreign language back to the school. Th program had been cancelled due to budget cuts but parents had not been alerted of that fact. We found out through the school year. I realized then how important it was for parents to be involved in their children's school and to not take anything for granted. Personal New York City offers great options for parents of the Public School System, but its navigation can be Statement mind boggling, especially for an outsider (I am a dual citizen and French native who moved to the US as an adult). The fact that we have a voice in the decisions of the DOE is a not only a right we have but a duty we should fulfill if we have the time and energy. I have participated in a few CEC meetings, SLT meetings, as well as a Citywide Council for High Schools at City Hall. Hearing Chancellor Fariña talk about her plans, her energy is evident and her passion as well. All of the Superintendents who attended and all attendees showed great motivation to move this very large ship forward. I am looking forward to sharing out of the box ideas to make budgets go beyond their sheer number, something I do every day in my job. I also love to come up with creative ideas to respond to particular needs and I feel this will come in handy in the high school system. My daughter is a Sophomore, so the Term of this position is perfect.

In addition, I was Background elected president of the George Egbert Intermediate School 2 PTA from 2012-2014. I also have a child in the District 75 program, the Special Education/IEP program and the General Education program. Personal Parent leaders are the advocates for our children and as such, ensure that schools are using the best Statement practices available in order to provide a quality education for our children. While performing my duties as a parent leader, one of the things I've learned is a powerful tool called listening. While attending various meetings and conferences, people are emphatic about making their point, but sometimes tend not to listen to a different point of view. Respecting a different viewpoint is important because this how we learn from one another and in the end, we are all there to do what’s best for our children. In addition, because I have one child with an IEP, one in District 75, and one in a General Ed program, I've learned that students in each of these programs have different needs in order for them to be successful. As parents, we must ensure that our children’s needs are being met by their school and if they’re not, then we must advocate for them. My hope is that the NYC DOE continues its outreach on engaging parents and works together with the various parent groups. If elected to the CCHS, I will use my experience and be your voice to ensure that the NYC DOE is including parents in their policy discussions.

Personal I have three kids who go to school. One of them goes to a special school. She has a hearing loss. I was Statement deeply touched whenever I heard a story about a teacher who was unjust, unconcerned, racist...or abusing children. I feel concerned when I heard complaints about crowded classroom, dirty bathrooms ...and lack of means of transportation. It is easy to find solutions to all of these and other problems that all of us: parents, teachers, pupils and students suffer from and concerned about by listening, putting hand in hand to work together. We have to attend all the meetings held in schools or elsewhere that discuss the needs of our kids. The City of New York is working hard to serve. But it wants a very real and meaningful cooperation.

DBN: 10X141 IEP: N/A ELL N/A 10X696 N/A N/A Applicant I am the parent of 2 children who have been in the NYC public school system from kindergarten to Background now, 6th and 9th grades. I coached T-ball for one of my children together with other parents. I served as a class parent one year in my child's elementary school, but have not held PA office. I am on the board of directors at the synagogue where I belong and have been the parent representative for our Hebrew school for about 2 years. I am an attorney and have worked in the Bronx and Manhattan for over 20 years serving low-income community members. I represent tenants in eviction proceedings, and clients seeking to access public and other benefits. I have worked for not-for-profits representing low-income clients for most of my career as an attorney. Over the current school year, I have volunteered with the PTA at my child's high school to help understand current initiatives related to specialized high school admissions and demographic trends of specialized high school students. I am on a committee of parents at my child's high school that is working to attract student applicants from currently underrepresented populations, particularly African-American and Latino students. Personal I am a parent of 2 children who are currently in 6th and 9th grades. I attended public school Statement throughout my childhood and strongly believe in the need to support and properly fund our public schools. The public schools my children have attended since kindergarten have been excellent schools. I have been pleased with their schools and, aside from being a class parent representative, have never run for PA office. I am seeking to run for a position with either the Community Education Council for my district or with the Citywide Council on High Schools because I am very interested in participating in the direction our public schools are taking in a broader way than is possible by being involved in my children's local schools. I am concerned about inadequate funding for our city schools and with high levels of segregation in many of our schools. I am afraid that the resources of our public school system are not being evenly shared. I would like to play a role in trying to ensure that all of our public schools are well-supported, fully funded and up to the task of educating our children. I am hopeful that by serving on a council I can help shape education policy to benefit all the children in the New York City public schools.

Candidate Miguelina Antonia Martinez Urena

DBN: 07X334 IEP: N/A ELL N/A N/A N/A Applicant Currently I am the President of the PTA of my school. I am also a member of the SLT. I have a Background daughter that recently arrived to this country and finds herself in a school that has ESL programs. This school only focuses on students that have recently arrived in this country. Also, I attend all of the monthly meetings that are held for parents in our school. I participate in all of the school activities that are constantly offered to parents and students because I know that the active participation of parents in the school community makes a difference. I do all of this because I know that the parents, in partnership with the school, are a fundamental part of the education and growth of our children and students. Personal My interest in becoming a member of one or both citywide education councils is fundamentally based Statement on the fact that education is an essential tool for advancement, particularly in the United States where youth have ample opportunities to get an education. I have always had great interest in learning and following-up on the instruction and conduct of my daughter, however, as a member of the education council, I could have the opportunity to support other parents that due to possible work obligations or not knowing the importance of their child's education, do not approach the school or their meetings. I would like to lead and accompany other parents that have initiatives and questions, and I know that I can advocate for the well-being of other children in the school and in my district. I already know that knowledge is power, and when this power is combined with the desire to work for the well-being of other children and their families, the result is something positive. I feel immensely honored to have the opportunity to participate in the selection in any of the New York City citywide education councils. It would be an honor to serve to improve our community and the education of our City.
