Last Game Men’s Basketball Drops Season Opener at No. 19 Texas November 25, 2020 at Frank Erwin Center – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's basketball team fell to the No. 19 Texas Longhorns 91-55 in the season opener. Sophomore Quinton Johnson II led the Vaqueros (0-1) with 13 points, seven rebounds and two steals. Junior LaQuan Butler scored 10 points while hitting a pair of three-pointers and grabbing two steals. Senior Chris Freeman finished with 10 points and five rebounds. Courtney Ramey led the Longhorns (1-0) with 20 points, five rebounds and six assists. Matt Coleman III scored 17 points with five assists. Kai Jones scored 14 points with eight rebounds. Gerald Liddell finished with 10 points, six rebounds and three assists. Greg Brown III posted a double-double with 11 points with 10 rebounds. The Vaqueros were within 5-4 on a Freeman dunk and a pair of free throws by senior Javon Levi in the opening four minutes. The Longhorns scored the next 12 points as part of a 24-7 run over a span of nine minutes to go up 29-11. The Longhorns took their largest lead of the half at 36-17 with 4:46 remaining. That’s when Johnson and Butler used three-pointers to power a 10-0 run to bring the Vaqueros to within 36-27. The Vaqueros were still within nine at 38-29 with 1:50 left on a layup by senior Anthony Bratton, but the Longhorns scored the final seven points of the half to take a 45-29 lead. Johnson opened the second half with a jumper, but the Longhorns answered with a 13-6 run to push the game out of reach.

Previous Games Men’s Basketball Beats California Baptist in Overtime to Clinch No. 2 Seed WAC Tournament March 7, 2020 at UTRGV Fieldhouse – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's basketball team clinched the No. 2 seed in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Tournament, the highest seed in program history, by closing out the regular season with a 79-76 overtime victory over the California Baptist University Lancers in front of a raucous crowd of 1,523. Graduate student Jordan Jackson led the Vaqueros with 24 points, three assists and two blocks. Senior Lesley Varner II scored 22 points with a career-high seven steals, tied for the 10th- highest single-game total in program history. Junior Javon Levi scored eight points with a career-high tying 13 assists, a season-high tying five steals and five rebounds. Senior Isaiah Fontaine finished with five points with four rebounds. Milan Acquaah led the Lancers (21-10, 10-6 WAC) with 18 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists. Dejon Davis scored 15 points with 11 rebounds. Ferron Flavors Jr. finished with 15 points. The Vaqueros trailed 52-46 with 8:34 remaining in the second half. Junior Rob McClain Jr. responded with a layup and Varner came up with a dunk to spark an 8-2 run to tie the game at 54. Flavors and Kuol answered with threes to put the Lancers up 60-56. Then, with the score 62-58, Jackson made a layup and Varner hit two free throws to tie the game. The Vaqueros trailed 67-64 in the final minute before Levi hit a game-tying three with 21 seconds left to force overtime. The Lancers jumped out to a 74-70 lead with 1:51 left in the extra session, but four Varner free throws sandwiched a Jackson layup to give the Vaqueros the lead. A Davis layup tied the game with seven seconds left before Varner came down the court and hit a game-winning three. Jackson opened the game with a jumper and a dunk and then freshman Quinton Johnson II nailed a three as the Vaqueros jumped out to a 7-2 lead. The Lancers responded with a 16-6 run to go up 18-13. The Lancers extended their lead to 28-22 late in the half, but a jumper and a free throw by Fontaine and a three at the buzzer by Johnson allowed the Vaqueros to go into halftime down just 30-28. The Vaqueros scored the first four points of the second half to take the lead before an Acquaah three sparked a 14-6 run to put the Lancers up 44-38.

Men’s Basketball Wins to Break Tie with Grand Canyon Feb. 29, 2020 at GCU Arena – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's basketball teammoved into position for the No. 2 seed in the Western Athletic Conference Tournament by beating the Grand Canyon University Lopes 88-80. Senior Lesley Varner II led the Vaqueros with 32 points on 9-of-16 shooting, including 5-of-6 from behind the arc, with seven rebounds. Junior Javon Levi scored a career-high 25 points with four assists and three steals. Junior Chris Freeman scored a career-high 18 points. Freshman Quinton Johnson II finished with seven points, five rebounds and two assists. Alessandro Lever led the Lopes with 18 points and six rebounds. Isiah Brown scored 17 points. Jovan Blacksher Jr. scored 15 points, with five rebounds and five assists. Carlos Johnson scored 11 points with five rebounds. Lorenzo Jenkins finished with 10 points and six rebounds. The Lopes led briefly in the second half, going up 68-65 after trailing for the majority of the game. That’s when Freeman drilled a three from the right corner, drew the foul and hit the free throw to spark the Vaqueros. Varner followed with a three and Levi hit a jumper to put the Vaqueros up 74-68. The Lopes got as close as four at 76-72, but Varner responded with a three-point play and Johnson made a backdoor layup as the Vaqueros put the game on ice. The Vaqueros came out on fire in the first half, going up 9-2 on a Freeman three. Then, with the score 14-9, Varner and Johnson made back-to-back threes and Varner hit a jumper to put the Vaqueros up 22-9. The Vaqueros extended their lead to 14 at 34-20 on a Freeman three midway through the half. The Vaqueros took their largest lead with 7:23 remaining in the first half when a Levi layup made the score 40-24. The Lopes closed to within five early in the second half before a Varner three punctuated a 7-2 run to give the Vaqueros a 56-46 lead. The Lopes followed with a 16-5 run to tie the game to take their first lead at 62-61.

• UTRGV won eight of its final 10 games and earned the No. 2 seed in the WAC Tournament, the best in program history, after finishing third in the WAC, also the best in program history.

• UTRGV ranked sixth in the NCAA in turnover margin (4.9), eighth in turnovers forced (17.50), 20th in steals per game (8.4), 31st in assists per game (15.0), 37th in total steals (251), 48th in assist-to- turnover ratio (1.20) and 80th in total assists (451), leading the WAC in each category.

• UTRGV had a six-game winning streak from Feb. 1-18, marking its longest winning streak since winning seven-straight from Dec. 31, 2007 through Jan. 28, 2008. The first five games during the streak were WAC games, marking the second year in a row in which UTRGV won a program-record five-straight WAC contests.

• UTRGV went 11-3 at home, marking the second-straight season in which UTRGV has won 11 home games. The feat hadn’t previously happened since 2012-13.

• After becoming the first road team to win at GCU Arena in 2018- 19, snapping Grand Canyon’s 16-game winning streak, UTRGV won at Grand Canyon again in 2019-20.

• For the second year in a row, Javon Levi was the WAC Defensive Player of the Year, a Left Driesell Defensive All-American and part of the WAC All-Defensive Team. He also added All-WAC Second Team honors for the first time. During WAC play, Levi averaged 12.4 points, 2.8 rebounds, 7.9 assists and 1.9 steals in 15 games. The only player to start all 16 WAC contests for UTRGV, Varner averaged 17.8 points, 6.3 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.6 steals while shooting 44.3 percent from the field, 44.6 percent from behind the arc and 89.0 percent from the foul line.
