  • On Music and Scheduling Family Entertainment
May 26, 2015, Issue 449 On Music And Scheduling Great Country radio stations must have great music scheduling drawn from well-constructed libraries. That’s obvious, but the process sometimes isn’t. That’s why Country Aircheck called on consultant Keith Hill (playfully described by some as “the world’s leading authority on music scheduling”) to identify some common problems and useful tips to help stations sound their best. Coming Clean: The importance of clean, uncluttered libraries can’t be overstated. “I had a boss many years ago that said your library size is the station’s blood pressure, and you don’t want one with high blood pressure,” Hill says. “Don’t treat your library like a room with one door. If you bring songs in, take songs out.” Hill says including the number of songs for each category within its title or description is one way to stay vigilant. “Then you They Know The Way: KRTY/San Jose staffers host EMI have a constant reminder of where you need to be,” he explains. Nashville’s Eric Paslay and Big Machine’s Waterloo Revival Library cleanup can be a tricky proposition for stations Friday night (5/22). Pictured (l-r) are EMI’s Ron Bradley, without the luxuries of AMTs and callout KTOM/Modesto’s Sam Diggedy and Tim Nickerson, Paslay, research, but it’s not impossible. “You’ve Big Machine’s Brooke Diaz, KRTY’s Nate Deaton and Jamie got three important tools in that situation Jackson and WR’s George Birge and Cody Cooper. – the age of the song, the number of times you’ve played it in the category and the total number of times it’s played on the station.

Best known for his versatile voice, intense lyrical narratives and dexterity on the acoustic twelve-string guitar, he has been called “one of the most gifted songwriters of his generation” by ABC News and in 1995 named “Male vocalist of the year” by Rolling Stone. Phillips, a Stockton, CA native, founded the seminal LA band Shiva Burlesque with vocalist and childhood friend Jeffery Clark (Nevada City local and owner of The Magic Theatre). After releasing two albums the band broke up in 1990 and Phillips went on to form Grant Lee Buffalo. Grant Lee Buffalo released four recordings on Slash/Warner Bros. in addition to various soundtracks, live releases, and a box set retrospective. The endorsement of some of music’s biggest bands, REM, Pearl Jam and The Smashing Pumpkins (all of whom the group toured with) helped to fuel the band’s popularity.

A revolution in roots-rock began in the late 1980s in Chicago with Souled American and Uncle Tupelo, and in the 1990s became a new genre altogether. It was Nashville's country music transposed into the small bedrooms of the disaffected youth in the small towns of the heartland. Those bands had rediscovered country and folk music for the hardcore generation: their descendants dumped hardcore for the most spartan and traditional of sounds. Led by singer-songwriters Jay Farrar and Jeff Tweedy, Uncle Tupelo (1) pretty much invented a new genre when they released No Depression (1990), a collection of country ballads played with the fury of hardcore. Abandoning the punk edge and focusing on the depressed stories, the acoustic tour de force of March 16-20 1992 (1992) invented more than a genre: it created a movement for sincere, populist and political music. Anodyne (1993) hinted at the mainstream appeal of this idea. After they parted ways, the two leaders would form two of the most influential bands of the 1990s: Son Volt and Wilco.

  • One-On-One with Grant-Lee Phillips, Past Rolling Stone Male Vocalist of the Year July 29, 2019 | by Chris Berggren, CDL Administrative Assistant
One-on-One with Grant-Lee Phillips, Past Rolling Stone Male Vocalist of the Year July 29, 2019 | By Chris Berggren, CDL Administrative Assistant Grant-Lee Phillips came to prominence in the 1990s with his band Grant Lee Buffalo. Originally from Stockton, California, Phillips, who is a registered member of the Creek Native American tribe, traveled south to Los Angeles to study film, but instead found himself caught up in LA’s blossoming In die rock scene. He formed Shiva Burlesque, a band that released a pair of al bums, before founding Grant Lee Buffalo, which doubled that output. While Grant Lee Buffalo was acclaimed among critics and artists alike (Phillips was named 1996 Rolling Stone Male Vocalist of the Year and Michael Stipe of R.E.M claimed their 1993 record Fuzzy was the album of the year), the band struggled to find commercial success. Phillips disbanded the group in 1999 and shifted gears toward a solo career. Since 2000, Phillips has released eight albums of original material and another of covers, paying homage to his favorite music from the 1980s. Known for soulful vocals and intricate song construction, Phillips has a loyal following and continues to attract new fans, old and young. Recently, I had an opportunity to talk with Grant-Lee in-depth about his musical journey. Here's what he had to say: Q You moved from Stockton, California to LA to study film…was music part of the journey at that point or did priorities change once you got to LA? A Well, film school, in my mind was a legitimate excuse to move to LA and get a real job, but let’s take it a few steps back, since we’re starting at the beginning.
