At the end of last year, I said Penn State should not be count- ed out in the 2017-18 season. I still stand by that WOMEN’S opinion and I also think that — VOLLEYBALL unless something changes — this might be the season in which Russ Rose’s squad earns itself another NCAA championship title before having to rebuild. Last season, the Nittany Lions had to go into their sea- son with a challenge: to prove they were better than a No. 9 preseason ranking. Despite winning their first two games, the Nittany Lions pro- ceeded to lose three in a row to North Carolina, Colorado and Stanford. Penn State then went on a nice 15-game win streak — a streak that included a 3-2 upset against then-No. 1 Minnesota in early October — before going 5-6 between Oct. 15 and Nov. 26 (the last day of the regular sea- son). In the NCAA Tournament, the Nittany Lions only won two games (against LIU-Brooklyn and Pittsburgh) before losing 3-2 to Nebraska at Lincoln in the NCAA regionals. Penn State closed out the season with an overall 24-10 record (including post-season play).
