(Friday, Nov. 6, 2015) – A strong performance by Claiborne Farm and Adele Dilschneider ’s 3-year-old filly Chide in a second level allowance/optional claiming event on Thursday at Churchill Downs has convinced trainer Al Stall Jr. to target his 3-year-old filly to the $200,000 Falls City Handicap (Grade II) on Thanksgiving Day (Thursday, Nov. 26). After four straight starts against graded stakes company, which included a third in the Mother Goose (GI) at Belmont Park and a runner-up effort in the Dogwood (GIII) during Churchill’s September Meet, Chide had some class relief on Thursday. The daughter of Blame defeated last year’s Golden Rod (GII) runner-up and even-money favorite No Fault of Mine by four lengths while clocking 1 1/16 miles in 1:44.10. “She came out of [Thursday’s] race well and we think this [Falls City Handicap] will be a nice little spot for her,” Stall Jr. said. “Her sire [Blame] won the [2009] Clark [Handicap] which is the same distance and the same weekend so she should fit in that race well.” On the dam side, Chide is out of the A.P. Indy mare Yell , who ran third in the 2003 Kentucky Oaks behind Marylou Whitney ’s Bird Town . “I’ve had a lot of Yell’s babies and they seem to run real well,” Stall said. “One of her first offspring, Cheery won a stakes down at Oaklawn a couple of years ago. As for Blame, his foals just seem to get better and better with age.” This year will mark the 100 th running of the Falls City Handicap, which is run at a distance of 1 1/8 miles. Nominations for the Falls City close Wednesday. LANERIE OFF TO HOT FALL MEET START – Jockey Corey Lanerie , who rode 36 winners to earn last year’s Fall Meet riding title, is off to hot start with seven wins from 21 mounts through the first three days of the Fall Meet. A winner of nine of the last 10 riding titles at Churchill Downs, Lanerie, 41, entered the Fall Meet fresh off his first riding crown at Keeneland, where he won 27 races. “It’s been great,” Lanerie said. “I got a lot of momentum coming in from Keeneland. We’re just hoping for another good meet here and so far it’s happening. Things are going real well.” Lanerie’s recent success follows a frustrating summer when he went 0-for-57 at Saratoga. “It picks your head back up, for sure,” Lanerie said. “When you’re up there and not winning races you start thinking, ‘What am I doing wrong?’ but going into Saratoga you know it’s a tough meet. Did I expect to not win a race? No. I thought that I’d win at least a couple. I even had people come up to me this fall at Keeneland and say, ‘You’ve really redeemed yourself after Saratoga,’ and that’s always a good feeling. People notice that. “I’ve had a lot of riding titles here at Churchill and not that they expect it now but I seem to ride the best horses here. When I took the riding title at Keeneland people really took a notice to that as well. He racked up two stakes victories this spring winning the American Turf (GII) on the Kentucky Oaks undercard and the Pennine Ridge Stakes at Belmont Park on May 30. “He’s back on the farm doing some jogging,” Bradley said. “I’ll actually be going down there next week so I’ll be seeing him then. It looks like he’s filled out quite a bit and we’re real anxious to get him back. The main thing is that we got to turn him out and he got a lot of time which is a good thing.” WHO’S THE CHAMP? HANDICAPPING CONTEST RETURNS SUNDAY – The weekly “ Who’s the Champ? Handicapping Contest ” returns Sunday in Churchill Downs’ ITW area on the second floor of the Clubhouse. Saturday has 107 entered in the body of the 11 races (9.73), while Sunday has 105 (10.5) and Wednesday has 98 (9.8). … Trainer Chris Richard won Thursday’s finale with Frensham ($5.40) to improve his record to four wins from six starters at the meet. Scherer has spent the majority of his career based in the Midwest with stints in Illinois, Kentucky and Louisiana. It wasn’t until 1993 when he won his first graded stakes race with Little Bro Lantis in the Stars and Stripes Handicap (GIII) at Arlington. Since statistics started being regularly kept for horse racing in 1976, Scherer has won 1,410 races with earnings of more than $24.6 million.

He won the Curlin Florida Derby (G1) at Gulfstream Park in his last start, and an allowance race, also at Gulfstream, before that on Feb. 26 and is trained by two-time Derby-winning trainer Todd Pletcher (Always Dreaming, 2017 and Super Saver, 2010). The Florida Derby has produced more Ken- tucky Derby winners than any other prep race (24) and six Kentucky Derby winners since 2000. Third in the Rem- sen (G2) won by Brooklyn Strong at Aqueduct on Dec. 5 and fifth in the Sam Davis (G3) at Tampa Bay Downs on Feb. 6, Known Agenda looks to be a “getting good at the right time” horse with the addition of blinkers for his last two races. Jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. is a plus, even among the world’s best and post one. Known Agenda #2 Like the King, 50-1 Won the Grade 3 Jeff Ruby Steaks at Turfway Park in his last race and his first career victory was on turf, so rac- ing on dirt for him is a question mark. In two starts on dirt, he was second in his career debut in July and third against allowance horses at Keeneland in October. Although this is the first Derby starter for trainer Wesley Ward, he has a reputation for his horses performing well on a world stage.
